Can I use RDP ShortPath for our on-premise Remote Desktop Servers, or our own self-managed Remote Desktop VDI? We don't want to host in Azure or use Azure local....
No, that's only a feature of avd and only avail. On azure local and azure.
Arc gateway private path is the way
do the networks NEED to be routed? can both side of the cluster exist on the same VLAN/subnet
They need to be routed. Stretched vlan ist not supported.
just watched this again - do you know when 23h2 is likely to support stretch clustering? I want stretch clustering and don't necessarily want to deploy 22h2 (tech debt) across all our sites.
Yesterday Microsoft published an article that stretched cluster is not support from 23h2 going forward. You should either use Azure site recovery or hyper v replica instead.

Can we get a big fat CAVEAT in the description please? This is not a supported configuration from Microsoft and will only lead to customer confusion
Hi! Another question for you :) it’s possible to crate a stretched cluster like AZHCI 22H2 but with windows server 2025 perpetual purchase? There are some limitations ?
Hi, yes thats possible. It was recently announced but stretched will also come to HCI (now Azure Local) with perpatual licensing. :) Not from my knowledge but didnt played with it. Cheers, Flo
Too blurry!
Thanks for the feedback :) will do better next time.
Hi , i need to configure a 4node stretched cluster. 2 node each site. The only way to do this is Azure Stack HCI? Is very very expensive.. Can i do this with classic windows 2022/2025 Datacenter license?
You can use windows server 2025 or use windows server license with software assurance to license your hci nodes. I discussed the licensing with Sven Langenfeld on another video on this channel :)
Great to have this, but also poor that Microsoft plus OEMs don't offer anything of this range. And that's very exclusive to Azure Stack HCI, while other solutions are covered.
The Acuutech calculator also covers windows server and yes, that's way Flo supported Acuutech with their solution. It really offered more than any other product on the market
@@thehybridfriends do you have a link to the solution in marketplace Flo? I fail to find it.
Grazie.
Another little question.. do you have prevision about stretched cluster support fort Azure Stack HCI 23h2 ?
It will be available and announced on ignite next week

Thanks for the Video! I was faced with the decision to pick a Azure Public Region for our Stack HCI Deployment in Indonesia but unfortunately could find any microsoft documentation covering this decision - so I was glad to find your video!
Thank you for the fantastic tutorial! I really appreciate you sharing it!...
Please mind the wording and updated Docs in January 2024. Docs are not the legal source. Only Product Terms as docs now mention in a disclaimer. AHB are not equal for Windows Server on Azure vs Azure Stack HCI formerly it stated all Windows Server Datacenter + SA from all programs are eligible. This was not true. for Azure VMs: Windows Server Standard / Datacore you can use licensed cores, no matter the Software Assurance is coming from (all programs, except MPSA) For Azure Stack HCI: for reduction of Azure Stack HCI costs, only Software Assurance from Enterprise Agreement or CSP Subscription is eligible, and this is limited to Windows Server Datacenter. if you own Windows Server Standard or if you are using Windows Datacenter from other programs than EA + SA or CSP Subscription you cannot use these for Azure Stack HCI and guest OS licensing. Unfortunately, Azure Portal does not check for your elibility and neither does not state the correct terms (yet).
Flo, I tried that once, on CSP based subscriptions you technically cannot subscribe Azure Support plans for have lifesaving support shortcuts. This option is only available on PAYG subscriptions. Since the support is not tenant wide but per Subscription, as you said correctly, it is not possible.
Azure Update Manager is only for free in Azure Stack HCI 23H2 for "Azure Stack HCI Arc Enabled servers". This means the VM needs to be "hydrated" or created via the Azure Portal. E G. Windows Server VMs created through Azure Portal via Marketplace image. VMs running on Azure Stack HCI 22H2 or 23H2 not created by Azure Portal "Azure Arc-Enabled Servers" are not for free.

well said!
Great walkthrough for MSLabs and SBE packages ! Interested to see how to pull images built with Image builder in Azure (Golden images with hardening and security baseline applied) into HCI. Thank you both!
Thanks for the idea. We will prepare something.
Hello, where I can download the script of configuration?
Hi Sebastian, we have not been publishing this as the configs and HW, networks are different in every environment. Pls note that stretched clustering is currently only supported with 22H2 (= the previous version). You can still do it however you need to download the 22H2 bits and start with this. Personally I wait for it to come in 23H2 - (with improvements) - so at the moment IMHO I would encourage the people to be patient. hth, B
Is it possible to configure multiple Azure Stack HCI clusters at a source location to replicate volumes to a single cluster at a destination site (Many-to-One)?
Hi, not with stretched cluster but hyper-v replica could work that way.
I am getting hung up on the validation when if checks NTP. Timesync is working with only a fractional second deviation. The error is in the validation step: Azure Stack HCI Software (Check Operating System requirements) The error is: NTP Response not received on '00-HCI-1' from 'VM IC Time Synchronization Provider': 'The following error occurred: No such host is known. I have tried with the hosts connected to AD and without; with IPv6 and without; standalone and clustered. I can do lookups on the hostname, so I don't know where this error is coming from. Hi @Master_Failure yeah - this is something new. I experienced that a time server setting is now required. I updated the corresponding github code repository: so make sure you sync the repo and make the updated changes to your config files. see e.g. github.com/bfrankMS/CreateHypervVms/tree/master/Scenario-AzStackHCI#7-make-sure-you-have-a-time-server-set-ntp let me know if this solves your setup. thx & best, B

Been a Hyper-V Engineer since its inception in Windows Server 2008. I am over the moon knowing Hyper-V is back and better in Windows Server 2025. Not a Fan of AsHCI 23h2 Build, Azure HCI deployment takes far too long, 4 node 23h2 Cluster took over 4hrs for the deployment to complete. Where tradition Hyper-V Cluster only takes 15mins to create via FCM or PowerShell. In an emergency Recovery exercise 23h2 rebuild and recreation is not ideal. Finally. Took us 4 months with the PG to get all the exceptions in!
what if connection to Azure platform is down? Is the solution, the VMs and all the workloads able to work autonomously? Can you use Windows Admin to manage this kind of situation?
Hi, azure stack hci only needs to connect to azure every 30 days. In the meantime you can use wac, fail over cluster manager or hyper-v manager to manage the VMs
So first thanks for this video! I am currently trying to follow it and was able to deploy the DC and the two HCI VMs. But for the DC I had to create the Golden Image from a standard Windows Server 2022 ISO as the Image Index 4 is not available for the Azure Stack HCI image. Checked with "dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:M:\sources\install.esd" and only got one result: Index : 1 Name : Azure Stack HCI Description : This option installs Azure Stack HCI. Size : 9,526,906,146 bytes After creation I was able to connect to the DC VM and had to "do it later" at the license key screen. After that I was able to login and figured out that the IP settings in 3_PostInstallScript.psd1 have not been used. The DC VM got a DHCP address from that network (was available via network tho). When I tried to change the IP Windows mentioned an error that has to be fixed with reboot. After that the two network adapters had default names and just DHCP. So some questions about that: 1) Could it be that the Azure Stack HCI ISO has changed since you made that video? Filename is 25398.469.231004-1141.zn_release_svc_refresh_SERVERAZURESTACKHCICOR_OEMRET_x64FRE_en-us.iso 2) Should your script also work with default Windows images? If so what could be the reason that the network settings haven't been used? 3) Why do I need the DC VM in the first place? Would be very happy about a reply, Best regards, Marc
Hi Marc, To your questions: 1) The image has not changed for quite a while now - so it should work. This .iso however is only for HCI so it e.g. does not contain a regular Win Server image. 2) Yes. The mechanisms are quite old i.e. using unattend.xml file inside a generalized windows image. I tried Win client and server OS. 3) pls have a look at the additional descriptions made at: github.com/bfrankMS/CreateHypervVms/tree/master/Scenario-AzStackHCI The pictures there should help to better understand the setup and the purpose of the e.g. DC. Basically its providing 4 important things: A gui to manage HCI, AD Domain services, DNS resolution and routing of the internal HCI hosts to the internet via your gateway. The when you see the product key screen then not all steps could be performed automatically - i.e. no surprise that additional steps are failing (e.g. nic renaming + IPs not set,...) -> when you select the windows server iso to create the VHDX from (and yes you need to take a separate windows server iso - as it is not in the HCI iso) -> you can either take an eval copy (requires no windows key) - which I did (www.microsoft.com/de-de/evalcenter) or take a regular win srv .iso file and provide a product key...the blueprint sample describes how to do it: github.com/bfrankMS/CreateHypervVms/blob/master/Scenario-Blueprint/2_UnattendSettings.psd1 hth, B

With 23h2 it got much easier. Bernhard is working on a new guide
dose Scoped volumes supported in HCI 23?
Are you referring to something like this? learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/delimit-volume-allocation I believe there is nothing that would you prevent from doing it - and I am not aware of any "this not supported" statement. However IMHO a warning: AFAIK this is not part of the testing matrix (yet?)- i.e. there is a risk that might lead to less stability.
I am attempting to do the same type of deployment by using the vmware hyper visor. I am getting errors with the validation " Needs Remediation PhysicalDisk - Test PhysicalDisk API Checking PhysicalDisk has CIM data", " Needs Remediation - Test Single Node All Flash Checking single node is all flash" and "Needs Remediation TpmEndorsementKeyInfo - Test TPM Certificate Properties Checking TPM for desired properties". How did you avoid those errors, especially the TPM requirement?
I don't know if it works with vmware - I have never tested this. AzStack HCI has HW requirements it validates. When running as VM on Hyper-V these checks are omitted (as some might fail) hence running on a different hypervisor (vmware) seems to cause issues. You may edit the VMs settings but I would not invest too much time TS here. Using a hypervisor itself is already a makeshift. Give hyper-v a try - it's not so bad ;-)
@@thehybridfriends yeah thats what i did LOL. I ran into a couple of issues that I documented on the github repo. Now I am just waiting for the deployment to complete!
Really interesting to hear about the AMX facility. If I train an AI model in Azure and export the container workload to run the model on some Azure Stack HCI on the Edge, will it automatically start to take advantage of the AMX tiles ?
As from my limited knowledge, it will not for now.
Hi @bentaylor3408, great question! When you export a container workload with an AI model trained in Azure to run on Azure Stack HCI on the Edge, the model itself doesn't automatically take advantage of AMX tiles. To leverage the AMX tiles, you need to ensure that the software stack, including libraries and frameworks (like TensorFlow or PyTorch or openvino), supports AMX. Additionally, the deployment environment on Azure Stack HCI needs to be configured to utilize AMX. Make sure to use updated versions of these frameworks that have optimizations for AMX. Or use Openvino that offers support for AMX by default
Thanks for both videos. I have followed both of them and deployment was successful. It would be really appreciated if you could answer these questions: 1. After the deployment, there will be some vhdx files copied over to the storages, I'm wondering why it does that and how to disable it, my disk space is very limited. If I delete them, they will come back later. 2. Is there any document showing how to create the HCI gallery image from a marketplace image, or a gallery image from a different subscription, or a vhdx file, using Terraform? 3. Is there any document showing how to create VMs in the cluster using Terraform? Thanks 🙂
Hi, thx - glad it worked. :-) let me try to answer your questions. 1) not sure which vhdx files you are referring to. The tool createhypervvms itself creates a unique virtual hard disk for every VM you create. It does not work with differenencing disks so it copies the vhdx for every machine into the VMs folder. Inside the HCI cluster - e.g. when you ran the setup there will be some vhdx files for the 'fabric' e.g. the resource bridge or other images you download from the marketplace. Yes this might consume space. For saving diskspace I suggest you go prepare a sysprepped dynamic vhdx on your own first, upload it to the CSV import it (a second copy will be created) and then delete the source. Using marketplace images will cost you 127GB on disk. 2) e.g. have a look at learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/manage/virtual-machine-image-azure-marketplace?tabs=azurecli and learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/templates/microsoft.azurestackhci/marketplacegalleryimages?pivots=deployment-language-terraform 3) Terraform - personally I haven't tried but I'd go for: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/templates/microsoft.azurestackhci/virtualmachines?pivots=deployment-language-terraform#quickstart-templates hth, B
