Reverse Image & Thomas Bey William Bailey 'Ama-No-Gawa'
'Ama-No-Gawa' is from the new album, 'Tokokawa', by Reverse Image & Thomas Bey William Bailey, on Fourth Dimension Records. The album is out in July 2024.
Composed from 2023 to 2024, the three pieces on the album present a deep dive into the murky and turbulent world where analogue electronic sound sources are driven hard and without mercy into an entirely contemporary setting that’s at once commanding and convoluted. Vast torrents of apparently untamed noise are reshaped alongside iridescent whirrs, metallic scrapes, shimmering tones, space flotsam, deep well chimes, front line pulses and heaving hums over the course of three magnificent pieces that pull confrontational music inside-out t...

A conversation with Steven Wilson about Bass Communion and more, April 2024

The new Bass Communion album, 'The Itself of Itself', is released by Lumberton Trading Company in late May 2024. The conversation touches on this and other matters related to Bass Communion, Steven's passion for some esoteric music, plus goes off at several tangents that hopefully will also be of interest. Apologies for the raw, blemished and haphazard nature of this at times, but I still need ...

Splintered 'The Horrors of Linden (edit)'
Well, THAT was fun! Finally gotten around to watching interview tonight, down in NZ visiting 96yr old father. He's in hospital after a fall, with covid, still going strong; I've the house to myself and perfect opportunity to clear old 'watch later' list(he's got flash TV that beats my smartphone for viewing so I'm going to make the most of it!).. I needed cheering up after hospital tonight, and the sight towards the end of Richo squirming uncomfortably when Mark starts talking about Steven Wilson was EXACTLY what the doctors would have ordered! A treasure. Had to come back to my phone in order to post this coz I don't have my old man's codes ; just wanted to get my congrats to both Mark and Rich for the interview before I move on to my next bit of viewing- because my next bit of viewing is gonna be Richo's interview with Steven Wilson! I am SO hoping to find Richo mentioning the Mark.P interview to Steven.W and seeing what he has to say about it! The humour for me tonight was also magnified by having just rewatched the recent Splintered live footage and seeing RJ indulging in his own version of the 'dad dancing' phenomenon! Don't worry, Richo- it looked fine to me and I'm firmly on your side when it comes to you and Mark's disagreement about it. Why shouldn't we be indulging ourselves in a bit of physical expression to our music, no matter what it looks like to others? True freedom is freedom from the expectations of others! Live it up I say! (Btw- re Mark worrying about being trapped by the framework of 'songs'; the folk he mentioned, TG, NWW and Whitehouse, all remain pretty much within those boundaries themselves! I wasjust listening to Whitehouse on my way to the supermarket today- sounded song-based to me!). Right-Im off to see what Richo and SW have to say- then I've GOT to try to track down footage of Mark.P's cassette bonfire! Shades Drummond or WHAT? Brilliant. Not good for the environment though!
Pleased you enjoyed the convo, Don! Hope you like the SW one as well. Steven and Mark are very different to each other in many respects, but I'd contend there are similarities as well. I'm glad music allows room for both and far more besides who are driven by a kind of maverick spirit, anyway. Hope your father is okay. At 96 he sounds like he's made of strong stuff!
You could go on a bloody rampage armed with a copy of both the Hunting Lodge 3xLP and the Adventures in Reality book…
Hahaha!
Got my copy from you all the way to me in Canada a few weeks ago. Great album and is one of my favourite Bass Communion albums. Thank you for getting it to me and in good shape!!
Pleased to hear! Glad you like it!
Very cool!
Nice informative upload! And of course happy birthday young man 😅
Thank you!
The gun laws line made me laugh out loud. I lost half a vegetarian spring roll.
I aim to please!
If I'd like to send Steven some material in the future, because maybe we could work together on a song or two, how would that work ? Thanks
With all due respect, I don't think it would. SW pretty much knows who he wants to work with.
Wasn’t this taking place during the time Gary Levermore was arrested? 🤔
Jaysus what a thing to wake up to on a Sunday morning! Excellent! Look at Richo throwing himself about like a youngster...sounding f'ing great.
Like the tshirt, RJ
First few minutes sound pretty metal actually 😀 Glad to see James's ancient SG is still alive & kicking ! Ya still got it, Richo (y)
Bloody brilliant
Any plans to release ATVs Direct Action on cd or digital format ? No longer have a deck to play vinyl on and self rip to mp3 etc, so pointless buying this on vinyl.
Yep! News soon! Extra tracks, too!
Lovely and interesting update. Now I'll be patient for my Bass Communion CD :)
Thank you! Slowly getting there...!
What a great night at Cafe Oto. As you mentioned it was a full house and from my position I could see a large crowd outside peering in through the window too. I came for Steven Wilson's Bass Communion, but was suprised at how much I enjoyed all the other performances; Edward Ka-Spel, your band Splintered and Alternative TV. I was telling my daughter about Edward Ka-Spel's "The Eternal Optimist" which he performed. I've searched and searched, but I've been unable to find it available to buy or stream anywhere. I don't suppose you know where I could find it? I saw several people filming the Cafe Oto event. Is there any chance of it being uploaded to your RUclips channel?
I have much of the Bass Comm albums, I look forward to hearing the new one. Thanks for the interview.
Welcome!
The public library in Canterbury - snappily rebranded as The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge - had a record borrowing section on the lower ground floor. Rack space was the limiting factor and while it stocked mainly classical and jazz, there was also rock music. Borrowing the LPs was free for library card carriers. There was also the Stereo Cassette Lending Library on a trading estate just outside the city centre which charged a nominal sum for each cassette. This collection was extended weekly with new releases across many genres. I used both of these from the mid-1970s to great effect.
Interesting! I belonged to the far smaller library in Sturry, however, which definitely didn't have records. Of course, I went into the Beaney, as we called it, many times, but I've absolutely no recollection of the music section. Mind you, I had little interest in music until I was 12/13 and punk was still raging. By that point, I was doing paper rounds and buying singles, sometimes secondhand, from a few places in Canterbury.
The interviewer's over-talking and interrupting gets kind of maddening after a while.
It's a conversation rather than an interview, hence being referred to as thus in the title.
“Yeah yeah yeah”…it would be better if Steven just interviewed himself. He already knows what he is going to be asked…they all ask the same questions
Great interview!!!😀
Thank you!
The title slide should of course read "...Grow Dark In The Sun..". My bad!
Great interview you did here. Sometimes, Steven Wilsons commentary on where music has been and is going is just as interesting as his actual music, which is to say, very interesting. You got some great answers out of Steven. Thanks for the listen. I also agree with Wilson, when I listen to music by kind of diy bandcamp artists now, they ARE really focused on novelty and sounds, its almost ironic music, which camofauge the need for crafting songs with actual melodies and structures. But there is a place for genuinely avant garde music. Excited for the new record.
Thanks! Steven is a good subject. There's a place for ALL music, as long as it has substance.
Excellent Interview
Been waiting for the hardback version, just ordered from Cargo. Hopefully it won't be too long in the post 🙂
Let me know if any problem/big delay!
@@FDRecords2023 notified of posting on Tuesday, arrived this morning (Thursday).
@@neilbower9052 Pleased to hear!
I would sign up for a BC subscription that releases those unreleased experiments.
Thank you for a great interview. Always love hearing SW give his insights and knowledge. Looking forward to being challenged by the new album. Keep being different! It's one of the key things that keeps me a SW fan. His ability to continue to develop and create new sounds, new ideas is phenomenal.
Thank you! I stand by what I contended in the interview in that SW is quite different to how most artists operate.
First time I heard Coil was by taking out the Horse Rotorvator LP from Hounslow library. Libraries were a great source of music for me too.
I'm sure I'd have taken advantage of records kept in our library had there been any! At least I borrowed plenty of books, though!
Great interview! And maybe the first time he was talking about Bass Communion in such depth. I really would love him to publish this in Atmos, since it could be even more appealing if you are immersed in it...
Thank you!
This is a great idea! I'd be very interested in a Dolby Atmos mix too. I only discovered Steven Wilson recently when I saw that the best Dolby Atmos albums were all Steven Wilson mixes and I only discovered Bass Communion while tracking down his back catalogue. I'm sure I'm not the only person that discovered Bass Communion via this route. Thus you may find that many Bass Communion fans are also Dolby Atmos fans and they too would love a Dolby Atmos mix.
Interesting interview. I definitely appreciate SW for his unwillingness to repeat himself. I've bought every release of his since 2010 and I haven't always loved everything, but I love that all of his releases exist. From your and Steven's description of the album, it sounds possibly like a stylistic buffet. But then many of Bass Communion's albums have been very eclectic, especially the first couple of releases. And as much as I love Bass Communion, I probably only consider there to be 2 compelling albums: Cenotaph, and Ghosts on Magnetic tape. As to your comment about the number of realms / music styles SW dabbles in, I couldn't agree more. But I challenge you to name me another artists that can make a 8/10 or 9/10 song over so many different genres; Prog, Metal, Ambient, Electronic, Psychedelia, Trip Hop, Shoegaze, Alternative, Industrial, etc. I would be amazed if there was anyone else.
Thanks. Steven's certainly a man of many musical talents. I like the fact he's got this singular, uncompromising approach to everything he does as well... although I'd level that at absolutely everybody I work with on my labels. Hope you enjoy the new BC album!
I didn't recognise the music at the front and back of the interview. Is it from the album or is it something from somewhere else. I liked the sound of it whatever it was.
Snippets from the album. Glad you enjoyed!
Good conversation.
Thanks, Dereck!
I've got an Easter egg here, but am confused as to the actual colour or shade of the beast. I reckon it's probably trench brown, but I must admit that it also reminds me of baby poo and diarrhea or maybe more acurately commode crap. I was actually eating a cheese roll when you treated us with the shades of vinyl soliloquy. I had also included a fair scoop of Branston pickle in my roll, so let's just say that roll won't be making it into my top 100 breakfast roll experiences anytime soon. 🥖
Haha! As far as I'm concerned there's little difference between baby poo and Branston pickle! The latter is a surefire way to ruin a cheese roll. Only strong/tangy piccalilli 'round here!
If It's not in the style of the Wobble man and doesn't contain guitar churn, then I'm not listening to it. Oh wait a minute, it is and it does. So I guess I'm buying it then. 😃
Hahaha! You won't be disappointed!
*promosm* 🎉
Cat pee here. 4 older cats. And not just pee either. And if they leave me alone until 4.30 a.m. I'm doing well.
We have that as well sometimes, but our two cats mostly use the tray provided. I'm hoping our dog is just doing it because she is so young...
International post and vinyl pressing all seem totally screwed at the moment. Just like the rest of the world!
Excellent!🔥👍
Thank you Derrick!
Could someone please upload the album ? Thanx
Thanks for all the music and books in '23 Richo. And am glad to see you're cutting back with the releases for next year 😉
Thank you for your support!
Glad to see you've fully recovered from your Bowie Phase, Rich !
I will never get over that!

Interesting insights as always Richo!!
Thank you!
Just taken a couple of weeks off from work, so I reckon my copy of Direct Action should arrive there just as I return. Fingers crossed. Happy to have got in really early there. The double lp you mention at the end of the address, sounds exciting as well. I want to suggest something else to you as well, but I'll do that next week by an email. Farewell for now from the sinking old ship.
Think you got an LP with a SG 'zine, so still waiting for the latter. Hopefully here this week. There's a bonus with the 2LP comp. too, but more details about that next time! Enjoy the break from work!
I only have around 2500 albums on various formats and I find only about 25% of it gets listened to regularly. I guess it might be the same for folks with 10 of thousands or more albums.
Highly likely. The pursuit of the album on a physical format being as much part of the pleasure as the music itself. Having said that, I enjoy dipping into my collection for something random whenever I get the chance... but there's no escaping the 'hunt' and 'prey' nature ultimately at work here!
@@FDRecords2023 I find new stuff online every day just about. All genre's but mostly industrial noise, extreme stuff and certain genre's from the late 70's to early 80's. So many interesting sounds so little time. As for 'actual copies" a gem hear and there is all I need to be satisfied at this point. Thanks for the vids. I'll be listening to them gradually and I have subscribed just in case you do more.
