I wouldn’t say “more towers”. These are replacing existing apparatus, not increasing the number of platforms. Unless of course the current ladder towers get reassigned. As far as I know the snorkels are done. There is always the possibility they may be placed in reserve status but they’re pretty beat up.

Snorkel is actually a brand name that’s been used with many different manufacturers such as Pierce, Seagrave, Simon, PemFab American LaFrance etc. just about every manufacturer has offed apparatus with Snorkel platforms on them at some point in time. it’s an elevating platform, however the boom articulates in the center which allows for a different type of versatility than other platforms, mainly to reach over obstacles such as trees, wires, and parapet walls. They do not have a climbable ladder on them so members must enter and exit the basket while it’s on the ground. The device can be operated from the basket or a control panel on the tailboard of the apparatus. They don’t typically have the usual turn table with a pedestal like most aerials and tower ladders. If you search the web for snorkel fire apparatus you will find plenty of them.

Well I know that pierce and seagrave have the best options of stainless steel customized rigs and are the most expensive which is what leads departments that have money to prefer them

There’s not a mix of Pierce and Seagrave at all. The PFD hasn’t purchased Seagrave apparatus since the late ‘90s. The PFD fleet has consisted mainly of KME, and Alf/LTI and since the mid 2000’s the engine fleet has been Spartan.

Actually what PFD should do is to install electronic sirens to accompany the q siren. Most fire truck departments like Boston and LA are doing this. It preserves the lifespan of the q siren. PFD is one of only a handful that doesn’t do this. They should in my opinion.

The unit this rig will be replacing (Snorkel 2) has always had a real Q, as does the Squrt (Squrt 8) that is housed with it. Most of the engines in the city have mechanical Q's and more than 1/2 the ladders. All of the new pierce tillers have a real Q, most of the KME engines have real Qs, as do the new Spartan Rigs. Rescue 1, sadly, doesn't have a mechanical siren, nor does the current collapse unit and air unit.
