What to know about finding and buying cheap airplanes overseas

In light of the airplane sales market, I've been getting a lot of calls about "deals" found overseas and what it takes to bring it over. Whether you're a broker or individual looking to buy an airplane to keep or resell, these are some things to think about.
Why aviation insurance rates are going up and what YOU can do to get better rates
Просмотров 6013 года назад
I recently did some research for an upcoming aviation safety presentation on the top 10 causes of aviation insurance claims. I had the opportunity to sit down with a major carrier's claims and underwriting departments to get some answers. Insurance carriers insure risks across the spectrum - anything from single engine planes used for pleasure all the way up to airline and space. When a loss oc...

Insurance - are you covered when flying someone else's airplane?!
Просмотров 3353 года назад
Clearing up a lot of misconceptions about insurance. This video discusses the protections of an owner's policy and non-owned aviation insurance policy. Insurance policies are merely contracts between an insured and an insurance agency for a particular type of operation and risk. Make sure that your policy adequately covers the risk you are engaging in, whether it be business & pleasure, instruc...

    Thanks, Sarah. I'm wondering, with the emphasis on time in type, if insurers give a different weighting for the quality of that time (skill building and sharpening)? For example, using your aircraft to work on instrument or commercial, or targeted training with a CFI on crosswind landings.

    • @SarahRovner
      @SarahRovner 3 года назад

      In some ways they do, but it's often hard to use that to affect the rate because on most standard pilot history forms, it doesn't ask for that. However, your agent can make notes or even state that "applicant completes annual IPC/BFR in insured aircraft". So while that question is really more for the underwriter, there are ways that the insurance agent can portray that to the insurance company.

  • @qchilds1

    Sarah, Thanks for this presentation. Your comments confirm my discussions with the carriers. One other thing that makes aviation insurance rates different than say auto insurance is that most insurance rates are based on the law of large numbers. In the aviation insurance world, there really is no "large number" to spread out the cost of those losses. It seems this market is here to stay for a while. And its wise advise to clients to fly and fly often. Thanks again for the video!

    Good morning Sarah, Maybe I am being narrow minded but why are we absorbing the costs of businesses that can launch satellites??

    • @SarahRovner
      @SarahRovner 3 года назад

      Unfortunately we often absorb the costs of others when it comes to insurance. Most auto insurance companies also insure homeowners and other types of risks, and if claims in another area are increased then it often means rate increases across the board. I wouldn't say we are absorbing those costs, but when losses occur in other areas of aviation, everyone gets an increase.

    Hand starting is foreign to many pilots. I had to hand start my C-150 one day (plane was tied down securely) and I got reported to the facilities manager by a fellow pilot that didn't know there are safe procedures for doing it.

    • @SarahRovner
      @SarahRovner 3 года назад

      Well there are proper techniques for different aircraft. Before the days of electrical systems it was common to hand prop, but nowadays most airplanes (even old ones like the Ryan) can have starters added on. Best suggestion is to find the manufacturer's guidance on proper start procedures and seek training from knowledgeable instructors on the proper way to do it.

    • @pmh1nic
      @pmh1nic 3 года назад

      @@SarahRovner Starters fail and batteries can get drained for various reasons. As in every aspect of aviation you need to know the proper procedures. My comment was more related to the person that doesn't know that there is a safe and proper procedure and assumes that since they don't know it must not exist. I'm guessing in this age of ubiquitous cars with automatic transmissions and motorcycles with electric starters there are people that don't know that motorcycles and certain cars can be push started to get them running :).

    Good job trying to relate this difficult subject. Watch out for the broad term you are covered. All subject to the policy Exclusions, definitions and insuring agreements. Definition of insured is an interesting subject you might discuss With your followers sometime.

    • @SarahRovner
      @SarahRovner 3 года назад

      Yes, I agree. Each policy is different and since aviation isn't as standardized as homeowner's insurance, for example, there are often different elements of the exclusions and insuring agreements that are specific to each policy. My first word of advice is to always reference the policy because they are all very different!
