Singapore has nothing,no natural resources, and God pitied all the people living there. Then God said, this is not good for the people of S'pore.I will give them Lee Kuan Yew to lead all of them to prosperity. And so Singapore prospered.

I am not Singaporean (Indian) and have no knowledge of either Mandarin or Malay. But I thought I'll click on this video anyway. I was surprised to catch a word through the clutter, somewhere in the beginning, that I thought I was familiar with. I heard "Pradhan Mantri" in the middle and I was like no, surely not. So I googled prime minister in Malay and to my surprise... Perdana Mentri?? Why would it be the same sounding word, I have no idea how these two languages (Malay and Hindi) are related in this way. The only reason I caught it is that I heard the word Parliament just before that, which is obviously a borrowed English word. So my ears were piqued at just the right time.

Simply amazing!! CEO's take company which are going broke and bring them to highly profitable business. LKY did with an entire country with people in it. Not shareholders or board members he had to do this for. He did for people with lives.

i wouldnt say LKY had excellent malay. it was certainly good, but he kept making grammatical mistakes that chinese malaysians still do today. and that mistake is the confusion between the imbuhan apitan me-...-kan and the imbuhan akhiran ...-kan. he would often say "yang kita melaksanakan". this is wrong, it should be "yang kita laksanakan" this is not a minor mistake btw, it is apparent to speakers of Baku Malay.

The most important thing he did was to keep religion out of politics because he knew the toxic Consequences which will result in very negative outcomes which will Hamper progress and cause friction and fights among a multi racial and multi religious population with disastrous Consequences for thr nation Also his many other policies which evoked much opposition and sometimes derision when introduced now in hindsight prove he was very far sighted ahead of his time I could go on and on but I think I have made my point . haha HistoryBro what are you doing here? It is a slight hokkien variation in accent. haha Wisdom and Courage. Wisdom alone is not enough, we need the courage to do the right thing. what is the right thing? We are going to build a multi races, multi languages and multi cultural society that integrates well. If we succeed, it would be an example that others envy beyond our borders. That is 1966. In 1965 US just passed voting rights act for African American, India and Pakistan still fighting wars on Hindu or Muslim states, Middle East are trying to wipe Israel off the map, yes, 1966 Singapore is talking about building homogenous society with meritocracy regardless of race, language or religion. This is democracy. A government voted in with universal suffrage of all races, men and women. What DPP has done over the years to separate the locals and immigrants, Mandarin speaking or Hokkien speaking, etc has eroded ROC unity and identity so much so that, we are not quite the same anymore. 天佑中华。Wish you luck in the coming elections.

His Hokkien is not representative of the Hokkien spoken by the Hokkien people in Singapore at that time because he was a Hakka and learned the Hokkien language only when he was an adult. Many of the words he said were not accurately pronounced but still good enough for the majority of the Hokkiens whose accent are closer to Amoy( e-mui, 厦门)which we called 厦语.

Some slung down in their seats to try and hide their faces. There is a video somewhere of thst speech. Amazing. ! He was a great judge of human nature. He wasnt very good in hokkien. He learned. He said the first time he spoke hokkien in public the children in tje crowds laughed ! He knew to get through to people effectively he had to speak their language!
