Wildlife photography is a passion for me. I love to photograph and share nature's beauty. I have witnessed and learned a lot about animal behavior while capturing portraits. A still photograph is inadequate for showing the wonder and complexities of behavior. I have started recording short video clips when I find a willing subject. My hope is that through sharing these videos I can promote appreciation for the nature that surrounds us, or at least provide a couple of minutes of entertainment.
Learning To Fly
Wildlife Photography. Burrowing owls are only 9" tall. They nest in prairie dog burrows. There were 2 nesting pairs at this location which is a prairie dog town in a cow pasture. One pair had young that were old enough to be testing their wings. An adult stands at the burrow while one owlet and later a second owlet test their abilities. It was a typical Kansas day with 30 mph wind all day. In wind like this, all they had to do was spread their little wings and they were lifted right up. On the other hand, the strong wind was hampering control, even making it difficult to stand. It got a little comical at times.

Burrowing Owls Nesting
Просмотров 69Месяц назад
Burrowing owls nesting in a Kansas prairie dog town. Mother owl tries to take a nap while 3 baby owls sleep in the burrow. The second clip shows another female with a big fat grasshopper that she takes into the burrow; likely indicating she has young to feed. Back to the first female: a young owlet decides to investigate the world outside his burrow, including me. #wildlife #owls #prairie
Bighorn Rams

A cold and snowy but peaceful morning watching a group of bighorn rams grazing at Miller's Butte in the National Elk Refuge. They were having to do a little digging in the snow to find the grass. #wildlife #bighorn #wildlifephotography #wyoming Music from Epidemic Sound
National Elk Refuge

Wildlife Photography. A large column of elk entering the National Elk Refuge. Elk in the Great Teton National Park region migrate to their wintering grounds at the refuge. It's common for small groups or herds to enter the refuge at various times during the migration but it's a rare event to see several thousand animals coming into the refuge in the form of a never-ending column. I had read abo...
White-faced Ibis

Wildlife Photography. The White-faced Ibis has beautiful iridescent feathers that shimmer in the light. The facial area between the eye and the beak, turns white in breeding season. It was just a little early for it to be showing up on this bird. A pair of Blue-winged Teal is in the background and later a Black-necked Stilt enters. #wildlife #wetland #ibis
Steaming Elk

Wildlife Photography. A herd of about 200 elk north of Gardiner, MT. It was a frosty morning below zero and the early low angle light was illuminating their warm breath. When I returned at sunset, they were still there. The elk were making their way across the road to bed down for the night in an irrigated hay field. Maybe they were looking for a late night snack. #elk #wildlife #montana
Cormorant
Просмотров 2106 месяцев назад
Wildlife Photography. Cormorants often stand in the sun with their wings spread out to dry. They have less preen oil than other waterfowl, so their feathers can get soaked rather than shedding water. Having less oil on their feathers makes them less buoyant so they can easily dive under water to catch small fish. #wildlife #cormorant #animalbehavior

Coyote on the Hunt

Yellowstone coyote on the hunt at Pebble Creek. I had been watching him hunt for a few minutes. Then he stopped and acted like he was hearing a vole under the snow. He pounced and was successful. He paused for a moment and looked at me, proud of his catch. Filmed in 4K. #yellowstone #wildlife #coyotes
American Bittern
Просмотров 7110 месяцев назад
Wildlife Photography. The American Bittern has a habit of freezing in position when you come upon them. This one had caught a Graham's Crayfish Snake and saw me before I saw him. So, the bittern was already frozen, motionless, when I noticed him. Eventually, he decided I was not a threat and when he tried to reposition the snake to swallow it head first, he lost his grip and the snake dropped i...
Black-necked Stilt - It Must Be Love
Просмотров 14711 месяцев назад
Wildlife Photography. The mating ritual of the Black-Necked Stilt is beautiful to witness. It's always exactly the same. Avocets share the same ritual. We tend to anthropomorphize animal behavior and it's very easy to do in this case. Come on, when the boy puts his arm, I mean wing, around the girl, they cross bills and walk off into the sunset.... You can't get more romantic than that. That's ...

Wildlife Photography. The American dipper is North America's only diving songbird. This one was on Soda Butte Creek in the northeast corner of Yellowstone Park. They are difficult to spot, being a robin-sized, gray bird. They are found around small streams where there are rapids. Filmed in 4K. (Calves): Mooove! No, You Mooove! MOM!!!
At the time I shot the video, I was so focused on the owls, I didn’t notice the cows were having a shoving match. Ha!
That baby owl just can’t wait to be big and tall! Enjoyed this a lot!
Ha! He was too interested in me.
They are so beautiful 😍 & such neat creatures to watch, learn about, and understand. You got a great video capture! So peaceful 💞
Thank You!
🤩
" I can't stop my leg!" Seriously, very beautifully captured, as always Thane. Some cords in the song are speaking to me.
Good one Dee. Yes, I thought so too.
“Yes, but it’s a dry cold!” Haha. Just watching this, I can feel my nose hair starting to freeze!
Thankfully,no wind.
“Clean my feathers a while…. Stick my beak in the mud for a while… Clean more feathers for a while.”
I… got….. Rhythm,
A 1 and a 2…
Great video! American bittern is hard to catch and record.
Thank You!
Wow! That herd goes on forever! It’s nice to know that herds of that size still exist today and that vast empty expanses are there for them.
I was lucky to see it just as they started to enter.
Wow! Stunning animals and you can really feel the cold! Awesome video😊👏👏👏
Yes, thanks.
Such a beautiful bird, lovely video😊👏👏👏
Thank you!
Awesome video and engaging music. Wow, what a beak on that bird.
Thanks Robin!
Such a beautiful bird! Way prettier than swans. Swans are bottom heavy and ungainly. Cormorants are gorgeous 🥰
Sandhill cranes coming?
Wonderful video! I never knew about the benefit of having less preen oil. Nice turtles, too, although they aren’t as exciting to watch! Where was this taken?
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Back when it had water.
Beautiful!!!
Thank you!!
Awesome video. Love the landscape behind, too. But a couple of those trumpeters were out of tune! Haha
Thanks! Ha, I guess you would know.
Now that looks like Colorado! Fun road! Love it.
👍 a lot of beautiful vistas along the way.
Love it! Great music selection!
Thanks!
Very good video!!! Love it.
Thank you!
That’s a stilted justification, you avian smut peddler! Haha
Too cool!
Thanks Dave!
Very cool. Cold, in fact! Great photography.
Thanks, it was cold!
Cool. I had never heard of those owls before. Seems like there could be some surprised prairie dogs.
I’m sure there are. Notice at the end when there is a pair of owls, they start acting like they see something in the burrow. Watch the edge of the burrow closely. After they fly up and the female comes back down, the top of a prairie dog’s head is visible. Have to watch on a screen bigger than a phone to notice.
Buffalos on the road
Great video! How close were you, to be able to get such good audio?? I was thinking they were pretty lackadaisical about sparring until I read your description.
I was as close as it looks. Just a couple of buddies playing.
Hard to capture & you got it!! I love this so much. 💞
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Love it! Great photography, and playful subjects, obviously well-insulated against the cold!
Thank you! Always entertaining.
SSS
Awesome!
Thanks!
Going in july camping in south Dakota and yellowstone so beautiful
Wow! Amazing footage. Those are huge beasts. The bull at the end is massive!!!
Thanks. Yah, the older females, like the one that stops right next to me, are impressive but you quickly feel a whole different vibe when a massive bull comes near.
Beautiful creatures <3
Stunning video - new subscriber from me
Thank you so much Kate!
What he said!
No trouble with the snow for him!
Very cool! Cold, actually!! Listening to your boot’s crunch on the snow makes me cold! The hot springs are surreal in that setting!
Slow traffic to the left, please!
They just don’t seem to get it.
That’s a nice rack!
Surreal!
What a view!!!
Beautiful!
Thanks Bob.
I absolutely LOVE this soooo MUCH 💞💞💞
Love the sounds, the sights and can imagine the refreshment of the total sensory experience!♥️
Thanks Tim!
What gorgeous scenery
It was a winter wonderland.
Huge beasts!
They are. You don't realize till you're close.
Pretty cool. I hope to get out there someday.
Yellowstone is such an amazing place!! I hope you get out there some day too! You could always look into volunteering/concessionaire or whatever for a season too!
