June TBR/Pile of Possibilities | Dissertation Reading & the Historical Fiction Readathon!
Hey, i just read this book and I've been looking around RUclips for reviews with spoilers for the reason you said. I didnt find this book hard to get into. I enjoyed the side characters as well as or more than the main characters. I appreciated the upstairs/downstairs aspect. The whole Breugelesque feeling of the farmers and craftsmen. I didnt mind the dialect, as these Midland characters sounded like the Scottish highlanders of Outlander to me, a show ive been binging lately. I agree that Dinah, the Methodist preacher, with her christian devoutness, was more of a symbol of "right thinking," selfless, caring for others. But Eliot seemed to think she was worthy of Adam, with his rational upright approach to life, even though he wasnt a Methodist (Puritan) loke his brother Seth. I enjoyed the slow reveal, Victoran style, of Hetty's pregnancy out of wedlock, which was not judged super harshly as sin. And the plot twist when she was pardoned at the very gallows was great! I thifted his book. It was my first Eliot. I've been reading 19th century female authors this year, mostly the Brontes. I appreciated that this was not a gothic novel, but still quite dramatic. I will be looking for Middlemarch!
Two of my favorite Victorian classics… Deerbrook and No Name. Absolutely fantastic novels.
I was looking for non fiction on Mary Elizabeth Braddon this summer and that biography came up as well as a more recent work called Beyond Sensation edited by Marlene Tromp which looks really good. You’re so right that some books just call our name more than others when multi reading 😉
I think you're probably right with the pronunciation, joy in Italian is gioia, which is pronounced like that. I'm reading the first novel featuring a female detective, 'The Female Detective' - so you knew what you were getting I suppose - which is okay, nothing exceptional so far, by Andrew Forrester
Hahahaha ... "the person I am most invested in is a dog" ... I can't stop laughing!! 🤣 I loved "No Name" also & have great admiration for WC! I've read nearly all his works. Now I want to read "NN" again!!
No Name is fantastic! I'm so glad you're loving it. It would make an amazing film or miniseries. I wish someone would produce that already.
I just finished A Superfluous Woman by Victorian Secret Publishing and rated it 5/5 stars. I liked it more than most of Jane Austen😊 scandalous novel of the day
Oh I love to hear that about No Name! I own that one. I finished The Moonstone this weekend and like you, it was all I wanted to read. 😅
I haven't read any of these books but No Name is on my TBR list. I'm having a lovely Victober, so far I've read A Rogue's Life by Wilkie Collins, two plays by Oscar Wilde, some Sherlock Holmes short stories and I'm currently reading Linda Tressel by Anthony Trollope. Oh, and I also finished rereading Jane Eyre at the beginning of the month, but that was more a September read that got delayed. Now I'm very tempted to try Little Dorrit by Dickens but we'll see. Its chunkyness looks so yummy that I may dedicate the rest of Victober (and a few weeks in November) to it 😃
I adore Sigismund Smith! I have mixed feelings about The Doctor's Wife in general (recently finished it) but so enjoyed his character! I love all the characters in Dracula! I haven't read anything by Margaret Oliphant yet! I need to rectify that. Great video!
You had me at van helsing 😊❤, new subscriber 🤗
I've only read 'Far From the Madding Crowd' which I enjoyed though 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' - the other Hardy novel I've read, is the one I liked best.
I recently read "new grub street" by Gissing & I loved it so much! It was first by this author & I really want to read "The Odd Women" soon! At your recommendation I just recently finished "The Uninhabited House" & although I thought it a bit of a predictable end, I got great enjoyment from the reading of it. Thanks. I am currently reading "The Doctor's Wife' & I am enjoying it much & agree with you that it is so much better than "Madame Bovary"! You've intrigued me with your love for Margaret Oliphant & I have plans to read and learn more of her soon! I have read a couple Thomas Hardy novels & that's enough of him! 😉
Reading the Carlingford Chronicles out of order just means you’ll have to reread them someday 😉. I think I read most of them this year too and had such a good time with them. Also discovered Mary Elizabeth Braddon this year and having fun with her books too! I’m at 42 on your list and can’t remember if that’s better than last year, I’m assuming it must be!
I have read only 18 of the books on the list 🫤 But I wasn't expecting to have read as much as you anyways, so that's fine 😂. I'll try to find The Uninhabited house online, it sounds very interesting and you speaking so highly about it made me curious for reading it too.
I would go for a Woman of No Importance, though all the plays are good.
Loved hearing about your reads!! I really want to read more Shakespeare next year.
I haven’t read Dracula in over thirty years so can’t weigh on those two but I love all your Oliphant women, Jane and Gwendolyn as well as Gabriel. Two of my favorite women are Becky Sharpe in Vanity Fair and Lady Glendora in the Palliser series. I also love Frank, the vicar in Vicar of Bullhampton and many other Trollope characters but in Wuthering Heights it’s Nellie all the way!
I loved Passing and even loved Quicksand more! I feel exactly the same way about books from about the 1920s on (or so). For me, it seems that the novel became more about the plot and materialism. Very often the characters lack depth in modern novels. A few recent exceptions were The Painted Veil and Rules of Civility. They were both gorgeous, sympathetic portraits of flawed characters.
Really great recommendations. Thank you. Couple of titles really sound interesting
Jane Eyre, Margaret Hale, John Thornton, (also his mother - she has her downsides but at least she's competent and practical) Helen Graham, Marian Halcombe and Count Fosco because he's complex and respects her, Becky Sharp, definitely not a angel in the house.
I love Nettie. She almost reminds me of what I know of Mrs Oliphant--practical and taking care of her family and extended famiky on her own.
Awesome! I love Felix Holt! I've always been sad that no booktuber ever seems to mention it.
Happy to find another Felix Holt fan! It definitely deserves more attention than it gets.
You always convince me to read Victorian novels I’ve never heard of 😂 my t b r is never ending 😂
Happy to help/hinder! 😂
I love the Carlingford Chronicles. Thanks for highlighting Mrs Oliphant. I also enjoyed The Doctor's Family short story. My favorite in the series is The Perpetual Curate (another good one for the religious theme). For Victober "extras" I'm reading The Mystery of Mrs. Blencarrow and maybe Queen Eleanor and Fair Rosamund (they're in the same Persephone volume). And thanks for highlighting Felix Holt--it's one of the 2 Eliot novels I haven't read (along with Romola); now you've convinced me to read "Radical Politics" first :)
I have that edition of The Mystery of Mrs. Blencarrow and Queen Eleanor and Fair Rosamund. They're both really good!
I had no idea Kipling wrote other books besides The Jungle Books.
Adding all 3 again!!
💕💕💕
'Sigismund Smyth' 😂👌 Great name ive never read TDW but i swear i will get to it eventually on account of Sigismund 🤗💕🤓
He's fantastic! An absolute scene stealer. I was so sad he didn't feature more in The Lady's Mile.
The Romance of a Shop sounds so good!! I love stories with siblings.
Adding all 3 to my list!!
I read The Moonstone last year because I LOVE The Woman in White! Adding some of these to my future reading and on to your next recommendation video!
You've got me jazzed up about Felix Holt (i too have a complicated relationship) tho ABede & TMOTFloss are the tbr's on the shelves 😏🤷♀ great video 😊
Thanks! I'm glad I'm successfully hyping Felix haha.
Someday I hope to read Dearbrook. People have such good things to say about that one
i loved Sigismund. He wrote all kinds of stories. He loved writing them. And he was popular. He liked Isabel. Sort of like a sister. I' wonder why he did not come for George's funeral or when he was ill. He was George's best friend. I'm glad he appears somewhere else.
I did really like his sibling-like relationship with Isabel. And when he realizes what's going on between her and Roland, his advice is to write a novel as a way to work out her feelings. Funny but also adorable.
My top 3 Shakespeare plays: Twelfth Night Much Ado About Nothing As You Like It I also used to love Taming of the Shrew but, as you said, spousal abuse isn’t actually funny. 😅
I need to get to As You Like It! Maybe next year.
@@elizabethaliteraryprincess I’d love to hear your thoughts on it in the future!
Oh I thoroughly enjoyed "No Name" by WC! I had never heard of Deerbrook & definitely want to read that one. All of your other choices are fantastic & my TBR list is growing outta control! Thanks ... I think?! hahaha
I'm 200 pages into No Name and absolutely loving it so far!
Wow! Very interesting video. I have never thought of who were my fav individual characters in Vic Lit. Off the top of my head I would have to say Ruth & Mary Barton. Gaskell, of course, being my fav female author ;). The men ... I'll have to give much more thought ... I giggled at your assessment of Mr. Lockwood! I never quite thought of him like that, but you are right! Thanks for that insight ... profoundly entertaining :)
Glad you enjoyed! Gaskell does have lots of great characters too. It was honestly hard to narrow the list down, and as soon as I was done filming I remember five more characters that I wish I'd included. 😆
Love ALL your recommendations! Subbed your channel & look forward to viewing more of your videos :) Happy Victober!!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed. Happy Victober!
Gwendolyn has to pay so hard for being young and headstrong. I really have to read Mrs. Oliphant! I have not read anything.
Definitely check out Oliphant! She's fantastic! I'd recommend starting with Hester or Miss Marjoribanks.
I love Jane Eyre too, but I believe my favourite (or at least the one I can relate the most with) is Margaret Hale from North and South (Mr Thornton is one of my favourites too, as Mr Arabin from Barchester Towers and the teacher in Dr Wortle's School by Trollope, I forgot his name but he's the one married to an American woman.
Margaret Hale and Mr. Thornton are up there for me too (though I'm not sure how much Richard Armitage playing him as influenced that...)
When you were talking about Sigismund changing his last name to sound more posh, I was half expecting 'Psmith'😂
🤣 I mean, I wouldn't put it past this guy. He's so ridiculous; I love him!
That was so much fun, a lot of great choices. It makes me really want to re-read Dracula as I don't remember much even though I loved it. I definitely would add Lucy Snowe and Count Fosco (haha!) on the list personally :)
Count Fosco was one I wish I'd included as soon as I finished filming! But I didn't feel like going back to refilm it haha. He's such a great villain!
Ohhh you've sold me on them all! I own Felix already and was afraid of it when I learned it was political.
Yay! I think that happens to a lot of people with Felix (me included). I hope you enjoy it!
As ever, I love these videos.
Just found your channel! Subscribing and going back to watch the rest of your videos in this series! 💕
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed! ❤
ooo I havent heard of any of these before! thank you :)
I loved Felix Holt!!! 😍
Happy Victober! I haven't read any of these but I already downloaded the free version of Felix Holt and The Rector on my Kindle. I haven't read any Eliot yet, do you think this could be a good one to start with her? Thank you!
I usually recommend The Mill on the Floss or Silas Marner, but I don't think Felix would be a bad place to start with Eliot as long as it sounds interesting to you. It does give you a good feel for some of what she does in Middlemarch, just with less of the length and better pacing haha.
Is Carlingford and Barsetshire alike? I've read Barsst, but am very interested in reading your girl.
Yes they have a very similar feel! And you can actually see places where Oliphant was influenced by Trollope, particularly in the last book, Phoebe Junior.
