December Rogue River Summer Steelhead - Half Stepping Technique
Half stepping a steelhead is a technique designed to get your fly back in front of a fish that hit but didn't hook itself. Most fish that turn on a fly are active biters and fall downstream a little ways after missing the hook. Instead of casting over or behind the fish simply inch your way downstream a half step at a time... If this technique doesn't work within a dozen casts take yourself back upstream, change flies and work the water a little slower. You have a pretty could chance of catching that fish!

A Couple Of Rogue River Summer Steelhead 10/06

Five solid jumps out of the water! The old man (mid-50's) beat down the brush in waders for third quarters of a mile to get into this spot only to discover I wasn't alone. It was a warm Southern Oregon day (in the 70's) and I should have wet waded the low 50's water temperatures... Am I getting too old for busting the brush? Met the nice gentleman in the video (Victor) on the island and we chat...

Apologies for not uploading more. We have moved to the Rogue Valley from the Sacramento area - a steelheader's (and hunter's) dream wonderland - to build our retirement home on the Rogue River! I truly miss my beloved Putah Creek, but with salmon, steelhead, cutthroat (sea run) and trout on tap year around and comfortable weather... I went 0 for 3 in less than an hour before work.. Arsenal- Bel...
Humbled For 3 Straight Days

Putah Creek can be extremely tough this time of year with constant water level changes.. It throws the fish off and the angler has to search out new feeding and resting lanes with each change of discharge from the Monticello Dam. Hatches can be inconsistent or not happen at all. Even if you bring your "A" game expect a challenge! My first two days of fishing resulted in a big goose egg. However...

Unfortunately no big fish on this perfect weather day. However, a lot of small, eager fish provided action all day! To view the flies listed at the end of the video please visit sstflies.blogspot.com for tying recipes. Join me on Facebook! Salmon-Steelhead-and-Trout-Fly-Tying-1471612399811803/

Enjoyed the video! Thanks for posting.
The traffic noise is so relaxing, lol!
You’re the first person I’ve seen fish this hole (aside from myself) all the steelhead I’ve caught with a fly rod have been right there! One day, three in 45 minutes. Awesome spot awesome content!
Amazing fun on that river
I have caught fish in close and fish far out on this river. My furthest cast was 97' of running line. And hooked into a monster I never got to see. It was sitting on the other bank. Think outside the box when steelhead fishing. And you will get fish. Stick to what some people tell you and you will only limit yourself. Tight Lines-
excellent example of how to fish a run. Nice work.
Great video!
looks like a great day out on Putah creek. whereabouts were you fishing?
Rogue river?
Hi, just starting fly fishing and live close to Putah creek. Looks like you're up near the dam and bridge. Is that where you always go? Also, how did you tie the 3 nymph rig? Thanks so much for a great video. I love learning and love the solitude and challenge of fishing. All the best!
You are correct. I watch people cast away and never check to see if fish are near them. I can’t count how many times I’ve had steelhead use my legs as a break in the current. Swim right up and nose up on my shin in water that is a foot and a half deep
Good stuff man! I’m a Great Lakes guy and was looking to add a switch rod, I’m not totally familiar with beulah. Any other brand you like or recommend?
Look at moonshine rod co they have high quality affordable two hand rods
@@jojo35996 I thought the drifter they offer was a bit slow action...you think they’d translate well for a switch?
I really love all of my Echo rods. I just got a Echo SR (switch rod) 10'10" 8wt, it launches giant flies as far as I want to throw them.
@@jonmiller6320 My buddy has the drifter 11' 5wt switch. I find it a bit heavy and clunky.
I have 5 Beulah’s and love them, they are great rods. I live in the Great Lakes also. The G2 Platinum Rods are fantastic
Good stuff, thanks for the fly tying advice. I'm about to step into the tying waters :D
Hi I’m in Lansing Michigan and I would like to head out with you!!!!

hello John, awesome content. ROUGE RIVER Michigan, trust me I've looked for that bridge everywhere on Google map in scarborough haha
Very nice vid thanks for sharing the good info...
Is this the bridge from 99 to I5 at Rogue River?
Yes it is...
@@sstflies6311 Good to know great fish are along this portion of the river!
Awesome informative video. Just got my first fly rod and can’t wait to break it in!
Did ya get me in it? Hahaha!
still beats staying at home "winks"
I am lucky. Wife kicks me out quite often!
SWEET Video....cheers from a fellow Spey - swinger from the Upper Rouge - Denmon / TouVelle area :)
Love the voice over!
Can I ask about your Speyco? Which model do you have? I have a 13' 7/8 that I'm considering the Skagit model for, but it seems it might be a bit heavy. What do you think?
The reel in the video is a 3 3/4 Switch for my 12.5' 6wt rod. You might consider looking at a Skandi... Best advise I can pass along would be calling Tim (owner) at Speyco and giving him your specifications on the rod. He will match a reel to your rod based upon weight and your wishes. Awesome company to do business with!
Thanks for the info. I will give Tim a call.
Great video John.
Beautiful water....going up there in a couple of weeks, was that the Soda Creek bridge? Thanks for the vid!
Yes it was. Best water is above at "The Wall."
@@sstflies6311 Where is "The Wall" I'm new to fly fishing ive only tried once before and I haven't caught anything. If you could also give me some tips it would be great I'm heading up there during the first week of July. Thanks!
Did you forget or lose your net out there ?
Nope! It is in my tying room resting for another trip.
Very helpful video. Thank you. Could you tell me something about your leader setup? For example, it seems that you're not using a traditional sighter and relying, instead, on your line to signal strikes. Is that the case? If so, what line are you using?
HI Alex, I run a few different setups depending on conditions. If I remember correctly I am running a shorter euro leader in this video. There is 12-feet of 20# Maxima Chameleon to 5-feet of 15# Chameleon. There is a red/yellow sighter (8.5# Rio) at the end of the 15# attached with a 2mm tippet ring. (You can barely make out the yellow in some of the clips in the video.) From there straight 4x fluorocarbon on Putah. The fluorocarbon leader lengths vary from 6 to 10-feet. The sighter does help for soft takes, but more often than not you'll feel the fish strike if your presentation is correct. Hope this helps!
It's a tuff creek to figure out only some of it is wadable .. you make it look easy
nice 1 mate, all good to trade subs here cheers
It's not easy , but can be very rewarding thanks for sharing
Toughest three days since 1989! :)
Great videos. I really enjoyed watching them. You mentioned a Porch light fly. I tried to find a seller of that fly but no luck. Do you know where I can get them or do you sell them? Thanks
I no longer commercially tie, but let's be hopeful that someone picks it up! Thanks for the kind words!
Some nice catches on some great looking water, keep the great videos coming.
nice fish !I always use 2 flies will try 3next time thanks for sharing!
