Painting the 34th Longbeak Skirmishers - Turnip28
Hello!
Today I'll be going through my process of prepping and painting a new unit of Chaff skirmishers for me regiment the 34th Free Company aka The Burgundy Bastards.
Hope you brought your own bacon and syrup because I do waffle a lot!

Turnip28 - Meet the Snobs
Просмотров 18 тыс.2 года назад
Turnip28 is a free 28mm Napoleonic Horror wargame by British artist Max Fitzgerald. Its a kitbashing game that has you create your own regiment, caked in grim decay, death and root vegetables! These are my 3 officers for my regiment. I have a few more units to go before its all done. I have finished my Norman Army but I'm waiting on a new camera to arrive to make showcase video for it.
Hobby Update & Future Plans - Norman Warband & Turnip28

Hey guys, I was looking to doing another Army Showcase rather than a hobby update but as none are at 100% complete, I thought I would do a quick post on what I have been up to and whats coming up soon. Stay tuned for more guides, tutorials and general nerdy goodness! Much love folks and keep on painting!

Hey! I'm done! First miniatures project I've had since I was a kid playing Warhammer. This took a lot of effort but I'm finally where I can field these on the tabletop for a game. I have two divisions here: Edward IV, Commander and General 2 x Bill & Bow 2 x Men at Arms 1 x Scottish Mercenary Pikemen Richard "The Kingmaker" Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick 2 x Bill & Bow 2 x Men at Arms (one paint...

If you're going to use crappy cheap PVA like me then let it dry overnight for the love of God. You can invest in some modelling/basing glue which is quick drying and has a elongated nozzle for getting all over the bases. My local game group wanted to start SAGA. So I got the books, had a read and I'm pleasantly surprised at how cool this game is! Very simple to get into with a low model count; this should be a breath of fresh air after painting 260 models for the Hail Caeser WotR project! New name, new logo I really enjoy using After Effects, I just wish I could use it regularly to not lose the skills just learnt. BTW big props to the heros that post AE tutorials to RUclips for free!
Well done!
What a brilliant job! Thanks for sharing, it's an absolutely inspiring work!
@@albertomachado2690 thanks man! I’m so happy you enjoyed the content :)
You got me at "Reginald was never the same since his horse, Radish, was felled at the battle of Luvitz Bog" absolutely delightful
@@kingghidorah102 I’m glad you liked the pun :D
Careful, those anti-aristocrat cultists might come looking for the snobs. 😱😂🤣
Its deffo gotta be my next regiment. I'm tinking up ideas for a Tall Man model (I'd love to try some sort of beast who's head is a guillotine or something)
"to people in the US": drink coffee otherwise great vid!
Get some!
Mate we need more videos of you
I know its been well over a year since I've posted anything. I moved country and just been super busy. What sort of stuff would you like to see? More Turnip/showcases/paint tutorials?
@@bloodsalt yeah stuff like that
I would love to see more Turnip stuff as well! I just found out about it a couple weeks ago and this video has been great inspiration!
Looks fantastic mate! Also just a lurker when it comes to historical wargames. This is inspiring.
Are you playing any games, or thinking of picking any up? What sort of stuff are you into?
@@bloodsalt Will probably start with Ravenfeast. A free ruleset from Little Wars TV channel.
@@JevousGaming Love that channel, and a free ruleset too! Do you have a gaming community near you? Worth a look to see what they play so you can create an army to match
@@bloodsalt We’re actually just starting out as a small group of 3 sometimes 4 players. Mostly been playing the OnePageRules systems. But I’d like to try historical wargames with them too.
@@JevousGaming oh damn son, thats awesome! I love OPR so much. Got really hooked on their games. For historical stuff my favourite is Hail Caeser but the only downside is the model count for the game is so long. I play a lot of skirmish games too, recommend checking out SAGA + Lion Rampant
Incredible video, really makes me want to pick up Turnip28
Should give it a go! Its honestly a lot of fun putting a cult together, they all have a lot of character
Beautiful so much testosterone in this army
Loved this mate earnt your sub
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it (+ you have the BEST YT profile name)
which material did you use to make and later paint on the banners and flags? impressive work! I'm starting my own yorkist force so this really motivates me.
I’m so pleased to hear you’re getting into WotR! So the banners were actually just from the Perry box cut out and glued on, but I had to tidy the edges up with a little paint to match (as when you glue the two sides you’ll always end up with a white paper border on one’s side). After tidying up the line, a generous coat of anti shine varnish spray helps it blend in. Let me know how your army comes along :)
SICK....in a good Turnip way 😅 👍
I’m glad you like it. The army is finished, I just need the time for a full showcase 🫡
Great stuff! ❤
What games do you use these minis for?
These I use for Hail Caesar, my favourite so far :) 2E has a section on WotR
Just started collecting a Turnip 28 army. I love your Baron. Is that an origional sculpture?
It’s not actually, I can’t remember the name but it’s actually FREE! I found it on Cults3D. The body separates from the wagon so you could use the print to make a procession of woe wagon :)
Married a chav 😂
But most probably a fit one 😂
your basing material looks fantastic. is it a mixture? greetings from germany
Hey! Funny enough I’ve just moved to Berlin this year :) Thank you for the kind words. The basing is a mix ready made from GeekGamingScenic. It’s lasted a year! I just keep pouring off more bits into it over time so it’s a true mishmash of materials
thank you very much for your message and information. I was very pleased about it. @@bloodsalt
Never really tend to watch tutorials all the way through, however your patter and amusing quips an genuine joy at what you were making made this video informative and fun to watch. Sun well earnt sir! Bless your parsnip forevermore!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Really does mean a lot to me
What is the music? I listen to Martial Industrial so this is right up my street
This is like the coolest stuff ever, please upload more stuff, I enjoy your videos man
Thanks so much for the support. I have such a back log of videos to do 🫡
Great video! I discovered Turnip28 two days ago, and it lit up a bunch of fireworks in my head! I'm currently bashing my first figures together, and I'm having a blast! One small critique: the music was on way too short and obvious of a loop for use in such a long video. It ended up being really distracting to me. Still, a great video, I love how long it is. Perfect to hobby along to. Subscribed!
Mate thanks for the kind words. T28 was honestly never a chore when it came to putting models together (I have a lot of piles of historical shame!) I'll find more fitting music for future videos ;) I hope to see your regiment!
great video! I only just now found it :P
Thank you 🙏 really means a lot to me
Great video !! Grettings from OMAHA WARGAMES.
Thank you very much! I'll come check your channel out :)
I love how this game has basically no official miniatures, yet every army still looks like they are from the same range.
I’ve seen some proper whacky ones on the Facebook page. Like legit people sticking twigs and rope together in basic human shapes and then painting them up 😂
@@bloodsalt I thought about using some tiny potatoes as a basis for models as well, but I don't want them to sprout for real. *Or do I?*
@@JachymorDota omg that would be adorable. I’m sure you can use a bit of green stuff to make some potato bases. Extra points of just resting a shako on the top
Very nice! Would love to see more turnip content! I'm thinking about doing an army aswell and this is great for inspiration.
Im glad you like the video. Have you decided on a regiment yet?
@@bloodsalt I think I want to make a caroleans inspired army. I know that they where about a 100 years before the Napoleon era but being from Sweden I just can't resist, and it's turnip28 so who cares. And I read about a cult called the temple of swellings, which just sounded awesome haha. Other than that I have no idea.
@@jimbosminis that’s a really cool idea! I reckon those would look great! You could do a really muted colour palette or the blue and yellow. Would work really well, I hope to see them 🙏
I need some good resources for parts, either STL or retail. I want to make my fodder look decrepit, almost undead. Brutes appearing more like humans with vulture attributes, even if it means them simply trying to mock the appearance of carrion birds with armor. I want my higher ranking figures to be _actual_ vulture and human mixes of some ungodly eldritch sort. I want my "elephant" to simply be a malformed, gigantic vulture chick mutated beyond comprehension. The cult would be of the "Night Father," a great vulture that is said to bring about the night's sky by unfurling it's wings. I need resources cus it will simply take far too long to sculpt EVERYTHING.
Aight, ngl. that regiment idea is FANTASTIC! I sincerely hope you make it. You could try scouring MyMiniFactory for bits, it'll be a long haul getting all the parts you want but I beleive in you bro
These... are... Absolutely dis-GUSTING!! I fucking love it! They're just gushing with character like an overripe pustle! Especially the two hapless soldiers trying to push their Toff to the battlefield.
Haha! thank you so much. I've actually finished the regiment. I've just not had the time to make another video yet.
Did you use greenstuff on the horses?
Sorry for the late reply. Yes it was twines of greenstuff, and I cut the faces off to give them Cthulhu style faces XD
@@bloodsalt Ah nice
Afghan troops is a great idea. I had only thought of them for variety. Had not considered the cool long rifles.
Thanks 🙏 also you can get a sprue off eBay of for quite cheap :)
You are amazingly underrated. You deserve way more subs!
Kindest comment I’ve had, thankyou! I think the issue is my last video was over a year ago! Life got in the way a bit and I’ve moved country, which took all of my time. I’ll get back into it soon, I’ve recorded some glamour shots of my turnip regiment, so I will start making again soon 🤘 thanks for watching
I know this is a year behind and I have just found your site. I am looking at doing the War of the Roses but a tip I picked up a few years ago is that I spray my standards, flags etc with a matt varnish after experiencing smudging. never had a problem since.... so far!
I always appreciate new tips & new viewers :) I've been such an idiot by not using matte varnish , I use it to seal all of my finished minis nowadays. I hope you start your WOTR project, its a fantastic period
@@stephenbesley3177 Oh youll just love the perry boxes, they're great! My battlefields are usually low walls and trees. BUT you can check etsy for 28mm building packs that dont break the bank www.etsy.com/market/28mm_buildings
Inspiring! Thanks for the video
Thank you for watching :)
They are awful, bravo!
Thanks bro, The regiment is finished, I just need some time to film them :)
Hey I just wanted to ask what set you‘ve got those lovely sleeves and longskirts from? I‘d really love to use them in my army too.
Thanks for the kind words, so these are from the Perry Miniatures range, Afghan Tribesmen. You can actually grab a loose sprue from eBay rather than buying the whole box :)
I noticed that the finished figures have a dull/shine finish to them. Do you varnish as a last step? I have been painting ACW and it gets a bit boring after a bit. These look fun and might be a nice break from my current project! They look great! Thanks
Actually this was a recurring problem I had with a batch of GW wash, it had an INSANE shine to it. I’ve since stopped using it and wrote it off as a bad batch. Perrys WotR minis are great! It’s also a time period where shields stopped being used so no faffing around with livery 😂 highly recommend
You really embraced the grim filthy world of Turnip28. Love it
Thanks 🙏 I will get back to posting T28 stuff soon
@@bloodsalt great, it was really helpful to see your work. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks for uploading. All hail the Turnip. Really useful for anyone considering getting in on the game of the future.
Thanks for watching, did you start your regiment?
@BLOODSALT Yes, I finally received all the bits I've needed. Building two armies to make it easier to pursuade others to try. I've assembled and painted a unit of fodder and bastards so far. Omce I've finished two vanilla armies, I'll start making cult specific ones for each. Turnip28 will be my sole focus in wargaming for the foreseeable future.
@@lewiseveritt2091 awesome! What Wargames have you come from before T28? Have you picked cults yet?
@BLOODSALT most GW games from the mid nineties onwards with a few hiatus, some Deadzonr, Infinity, Saga, Dystopian Wars and Flames of War. None of them felt as right as this game so far. I'm kind of leaning towards building units for every cult, haha, but the grand bombard and snail cults first, perhaps.
@@lewiseveritt2091 I tried playing a game of 40k (I haven’t played since I was a kid, maybe 3rd Ed?) - and it was just awful. I hated how complex it was. My opponent who was teaching me has 3 books and a spreadsheet open… If you want some simple sci fi or fantasy I have tried OnePageRules recently and it’s been a great, fun, simple game. Turnip28 is the one game where it’s never been a chore to paint or produce models. I adore it, I just want to get better at modelling/building terrain for this game so I can have a diverse battlefield
Great pieces of lore behind the characters!
Thank you for the kind words. I hope to get back to videos soon!
Will you be coming back?
Yes I will bro, I haven’t posted for some time as I’ve emigrated from the UK to Germany. It’s taken me months to get my apartment sorted and starting a new role has taken all my time 🥲 I have been working on some stuff so I will do another T28 video and a hobby update for my other projects
Dude i love that Minis.... Awesome Artist! Can you please tell me the Kits you have used?
Of course! The body’s and heads are from a pack of Turnip28 STL/3D prints. The body is the Perry Miniatures Afghan infantry (you can get the individual sprue on eBay, you get about 4 body’s from one sprue) The backpacks are spare British line infantry that I had albeit any backpack will do really. If I remember correctly the 3D print files are free- but if you don’t have a printer you can find a 3D printer on Etsy who can print them for you
@@bloodsalt thanks! I have a printer i can print them myself fortunately 😁👌
@@deepjoes1072 nice one bro, let me know if you can’t find the stls online. I have them somewhere on my computer
@@bloodsalt thanks! Have you already played this game?
@@deepjoes1072 I’ve played 2 games. I quite enjoy it! It has a good rock-paper-scissors feel to it and the Cults spice things up. Everyone is a shit shot and likely to flea like cowards 😂 I need to get around to making terrain for my own board
Found a seller on Etsy for the helmeted torsos; bought a set of 21 for now, and ordered a few sprues on eBay… can’t wait to try my hand at some of these!
Aye I was gonna say, you can get the stl files and print yourself but these days I find it cheaper to source a local printer who has a decent 4k/8k printer - its getting so cheap now to get custom prints :) hope to see your work later on
great work
Thank you! Cheers!
Cracking video. Extra points for Lorn!
Cheers buddy!
was about to say the same thing.
Now I feel horrible and think my painted guys are trash
Nah man, surely not! The trick is they always look trash when done individually, but honestly you slap them on a base with some tufts, they sort of 'get lost' in the group so that together they look good
@@bloodsalt no they do and yours are beautiful with the paint waiting effect on the armor
Smashing force!!
Thankyou! Sadly my dice rolls don’t do them justice. I think I’ve lost 4/5 battles 😂
Very cool!
Thanks bro! I will make some more videos soon, Ive actually just relocated to Germany. Im looking forward to painting again
Omg what song is this!? Because when I'll play I'm going to create a Turnip playlist for sure! I already have some songs in mind; for instance "Shimmy She Wobble" by Otha Turner ruclips.net/video/9kT9uhmA2Bg/видео.html
Hey! This is from the soundtrack to the game Innocence; A Plague Tale - infact a lot of that soundtrack is perfect for T28
@@bloodsalt well well... thank you kindly, good sir
This a brilliant resource for starting Turnip28. Thanks for putting up this video! I've gained so many tips!
Thanks my man! I’m making a full T28 guide but I’m in the process of moving so it’s making it difficult to create content. Soon though!
+1 here
I was laughing out loud at all the 'aw fuck it', and 'sheeet' during the painting and talking.
Tbh I actually had to edit a LOT out. I had no idea how much I swear during painting. I seem to utter "fuck sake" under my breathe a lot too haha!
