Three types of black reflective tape and how bright they are. Starting with Nikkalite Flexible Engineer Grade (ELG), then Oralite 5700, and finally Oralite 5650 Rapid Air (RA). Hi what colors can be used on cars front and back legally?
You can use whatever colors you prefer. I would recommend not putting bright red reflective tape up against your tail lights as this can cause confusion for drivers behind you. If you use common sense and focus on safety and visibility you should be fine.
Which tape for bow rails?
I would use 1404 Oralite SOLAS since it will conform better to the curve of the tubing on the bow rail.
Steve, can thermoplastic be applied on asphalt if its a 6ft by 40ft piece?
For an area of solid preformed thermoplastic like a 6 x 40, you would most likely need to apply multiple sections of say 24 x 36 and butt them up against each other to create the entire area. So yes it would be possible.
Is there any black reflective trim to sew on clothes? Where can i buy?
How much direct heat can they withstand? For instance, if a strip of it were to be applied onto a headlight housing or to the metal shroud of an LED headlight. Would it catch fire/melt or anything or is that something you're unsure of?
Constant heat will degrade the adhesive and cause the film to lift over time. I would say no more than 120 degree surface to be safe. Higher for short periods but prolonged exposure may give you issues.

It conforms a little, but not enough to work as a wrap. Best on smooth flat surfaces.

What does it mean to have "rapid air release"? Is that for preventing air bubbles when applying? Does it have some post-application use?
Rapid air is an air egress backing that allows any air bubbles to be pressed or squeegeed out. Little channels in the adhesive.

@@scole999 thanks for the answer. Is there a more specific answer? because there exist colored reflector tapes, which, by definition cannot reflect all *wavelengths* of light.
@@thet0ast3r The color of the film will change the light that the little glass beads in the film return, but if it is a visible light it will reflect it. In other words, if a mirror reflects it, the tape will. But you are correct that a colored tape will alter the light.

Yes I would recommend it, but keep in mind the bike is usually on the lowest point of view of a driver, I would recommend putting it in your helmet too and/or by wearing a reflective vest

It can be applied to porous concrete using a primer that is applied first. It works best on asphalt.
can I apply if I’m in damp weather and if I try to dry the asphalt the best I can Or is that impossible or must it only be dry sunny conditions?
If it is not raining, just damp ground, then you can dry the asphalt out very well with your torch, and apply. Always best in dry, sunny weather.

I've only used non-preformed and had to cut it myself. Boss had me using a box cutter and I literally went through a blade every one or two cuts. Anyone know if there is a tool out there made to cut this stuff? (to clarify, the stuff we were using had glass beads in it, not sure if it all does or not)
danrich92 Flip it around and cut it on the backside most Thermo isn’t beaded on both sides.. You don’t need to cut all the way through just give it a decent cut and you should be able to fold it and it will tear off right where your cut is….. This won’t work if it’s really cold and only for straight cuts…If it is super cold hit it with the torch for just a couple seconds and make your cut smooth and right through
Why is the far right one called engineer grade?
That is a good question. Engineer grade is the oldest and most common reflective tape. However, I cannot find where the name engineer grade came from or why it is called that. Possibly because it was first used in the field of civil engineering.
