Gut Microbiome in Parkinson's Disease

One of the goals of Grand Rounds is to be diverse of topic. This semester so far we’ve joined with the Inaugural Scottish Simulation Journal Club; hosted the BMSc prizes; celebrated Black History Month; and heard about voluntary aid work over the world. Long Time No Syphilis - Dr Sarah Allstaff
Просмотров 1174 месяца назад
There isn't a league table for appearances at Grand Rounds, but if there were to be, Dr Sarah Allstaff would be atop it. This week she was planned to speak about Syphilis, but an unexpected update to the sexual health computer systems meant Sarah had to hot-foot it to my office to give her presentation. And there was just time at the end to fit in a dog.

Oh my Goodness this was wonderful to see and watch .. a million years ago I had the enormous pleasure of working with Phil In Northallerton, North Yorkshire..,we also shared such a passion for the great outdoors.. love long walks and he took me ABSEILING !!! I was terrified and exhilarated in equal measures I also recall visiting his family in a home full of gorgeous pieces of art work … He just struck me as a great human being and it seems he remains so I’m sure he won’t see this message but what a joy for me 💜

Thank you Kirsty and Kerri! I rarely comment BUT both talks and discussions were excellent and gave a lot to think about. I can only wish for a brighter future with such positive people leading forward- it is not about bringing anybody down but about raising everybody up together. Thank you for sharing perspective, experience and creating hope for a more positive future for everybody. Everybody is just trying to find their own little 'bliss' in the workplace - healthcare is not just a job or tick box expercise- it is at its core a fullfilling profession for meaniful and positive changes ( though sometimes we cannot change the outside world it may be about changing how we see and interpret the world that is more important) in the smaller and bigger communities that everbody belongs to. Your talks go beyond just disability and gender and we should not see these as as just 'special' cases compared to 'norm'. Refelecting back on the last few years- the only question that had any meaning and power was the only one I have never been asked and I would encourage we ask everbody this: 'What is important to you?' and 'how can we support you with what you have identified as being important to you?'. It is not about far out goals that are unreachable, it can be about simple things like Kirsty said- how we get to work, how we understand our jobs through induction and and in creating fair opputunities for everybody to excell and find their bliss and fullfillment which creates a positive feedback loop for people around and the large communities which we serve and are apart of. Thank you again.

Thankyou. So few people in Australia treat this condition. That lady in Brisbane must have had private medical cover because the public hospitals have no appointments for even urgent cases. There are no teams of people to treat FND patients. It is almost impossible to get a doctor's appointment, let alone a specialist! When I was diagnosed by a specialist, that only saw me because I spoke to the hospital's legal team, I was given Jon Stone's app and FND Australia website and FNDorg website as sources for my assistance and a letter to my GP. That's it. This very much seems like hopium by the ABC, I'm afraid. Australia has few resources to aid FND patients. Sad but true.

Oil of "Wild" Oregano: These mixtures of volatile compounds exert different biological actions, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative activities [7]. There have been evidences showing the therapeutic effects of OEO supplementation on barrier defects in the gut of mammals, including mouse, rat, and broiler models [8-10]. However, there has been no report about the use of OEO supplementation to improve the intestinal barrier integrity of pigs.

I know there might not be answers. but just in case. For the not showing effect on the running mill. Are you testing on how good the mice can use their 3 healthy leg, instead on how the painful leg has impact on the mice? There might be an adjustment in the running mill for better address the painful leg? Also do mice have different pain tolerances like you observed in women? If so, will it have an effect on the running mill experiment? Another completely out of mind question, do mice have left-handed/legged and right-handed/legged as seen in human? If so, what does this contribute to the variations observed within different treatments?

The assumption that "men do more substance abuse (eg. alcohol overdose) than women and therefore have a higher chance of su*cide" is incorrect in my opinion, because if you look at all the Muslim majority countries, in all of them all types of alcohol or addictive drugs are banned (because drug addiction/ being intoxicated is Haram in Islam) yet there too men die a lot more than women by su*cide. I think the main reason men die more is because of competition and male-ego. The society and a man himself demands a lot more materialistic output (not nurture or emotional support, but raw money and power) from a man. Eg, if any family goes through any kind of trouble, it's expected that the man would do something to resolve it. Also men are expected to be tough, if they open up to show their vulnerable side, it is mostly mocked, taken advantage of etc. Which is why men mostly conceal their true feelings. Men realize it through and through that society only values the materialistic gains he brings to the table, nothing else! As their self worth is heavily tied up with their materialistic possessions (wealth and power), if they lose a lot of it, or fail to gain enough by their standards, it just hits harder! Moreover society discourages men from sharing their feelings so that makes things worse! Also another important factor is that men are a lot more risk taking by nature, they are more courageous with physical stuff (look at all the parkour, paragliding etc), therefore the su*cide attempts tend to be more successful than women.

Brilliant. Thank you Ewan! The highlights as I see them -- (1) your provocative question, in paraphrase: What MIGHT be the ultimate implications of long-term far-uvc exposure (which you described as 'scorched earth')? (2) your comparison to daylight (tens to hundreds to multi thousand hour exposures needed to produce equivalent risks to 10 minutes of daylight exposure! [based on computer models] And my add-on query, which is correlative to your (1) - might it not be valuable to study other surface implications -- e.g. lipid peroxidation / oxidative damage / cell oxidative metabolic imbalances -- under direct far-uvc exposure? Also congratulations on the NRS fellowship award, among other goodies!

    1) By reflecting away 30% of ISR the albedo, which would not exist w/o the atmosphere, makes the earth cooler than it would be without the atmosphere like that reflective panel set on the dash. Remove the atmosphere/GHGs and the earth becomes much like the moon, a 0.1 albedo, 20% more kJ/h, hot^3 on the lit side, cold^3 on the dark. Nikolov, Kramm (U of AK) and UCLA Diviner mission all tacitly agree. 2) the GHG up/down welling, “trapping”/”back” radiating, 100 % efficient, perpetual warming loop requires "extra" energy which it gets from 3) the terrestrial surface radiating that "extra" energy as a near ideal .95 emissivity black body which 4) it cannot do because of the non-radiative heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmospheric molecules. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 0 RGHE + 0 GHG warming + 0 CAGW. The rate at which HPV is spreading from one person to another is so alarming these days. Many of us have refused to acknowledge the fact that herbal medicine has proven to be the best medication to getting rid of the virus. I came to know about herbal medicine when my dad who was diagnosed for two years was cure by a man named doctor Awolabi. I'm really happy that my dad is cured cause when he was diagnosed with HPV he felt so bad but thank God I told a friend of mine who gave me the doctor's contact and that was how I told my dad about it and today he is cured.
