Martin Turner Ex Wishbone Ash | Full Interview | Communication Breakdown | #004
Heeehehe. "Blowing Free" does stick out, but yeah, maybe it works to contrast everything else. :D
ARGUS is really brilliant. Great album. And it does feel like it has THEMES, which I really appreciate about folk music, prog music, rock music, etc. I like what Martin says about "WARRIOR". Interesting about the honor and heroism of warrior, but also "Throw Down the Sword". Brilliant. Interesting to hear how Martin was a choir boy, I think that history and experience really comes through. Love the richness of the harmonies on the vocals and the guitars.
I like how straight up Martin is about it taking a few albums to figure out what kind of band they were. :D ...on PILGRIMAGE, I love "Valediction". Very nice - I'm a sucker for stuff that sounds kinda like a really old folk song. Great harmonies. "Lullaby" is very pretty, too.
I really love ARGUS. Awesome album cover. Great songs. Love SIDE B: The Prog Folk Fantasy Concept sorta side. Brilliant. :D
The echo of Jimmy Dean says "James Dean", to clear things out. I was a teenager back then, deep into music, and still remember the first late night when I heard this song on the radio. It was mesmerizing, very unusual, and I'm a huge fan even now as a grandfather. Well done, thank you!
So he didn't choose to leave.... Ousting Martin was the worst thing they could have done.
When you close your eyes you can FEEL who is playing 🎉
Martin left and is bitter Great bassist granted but Andy has kept the band going
Martin wouldn't say it was "crap"!!Hes polite-its a good night out to see Andy Powell 's version but the real spirit of Wishbone Ash is this man!!❤
Got my "Turners" mixed up on this one. The band was never the same without Ted Turner as his Strat was such a good mix with Andy's Flying V. Martin here was the bassist I see, but as the vocalist of the tunes he wrote "insipid" comes to mind with good reason. Oh well, LIVE DATES remains one the best live albums of all time.
It is a very underrated work. It may not be as great as the masterpiece War of the Worlds, but Spartacus manages to be a good album. And the cast? It's gracefully well done, the narration by Anthony Hopkins. Edit: It deserves a reissue, as on vinyl, accompanied with some studio outtakes, bonus tracks (some remixes that are released in promotional editions), demos... Things that were made for War of the Worlds.
martin turner and Ted turner, and steve Uptown = wishbone ash No turners or Uptown no ash.
I absolutely love the Musical version of Spartacus, thank you so much for uploading this video.
Great interview. I subscribed.
A very underappreciated piece! Spartacus is simply excellent. Different to War of The Worlds, but then again, why should it merely be the same? It has its own unique character.
Disagree, this is a load of bull-plop. Bands have always had splits and the music went on. Personally I’m glad Andy Powell carried it on, have seen them and the music is still awesome.
Very bitter old man….no feeling for Andy’s band you having a giraffe…….miss your bass playing ……..
All about the money, always is, boot the original members, hire cheap musicians that you can boss around. Same story different bands
Civilian isn't bad at all, just different. I actually think it's a pop album with a nice touch of weirdness (some atonal chords, a bit of polyrhythms here and there etc.).
Totally agree. I love Civilian, very underrated
when i was teen, i used to buy only live vinyl; so, for me, the real Wishbone Ash will be forever "live dates"; i saw then in august 1975 in Orange (France). good time to have 17 and a new bike to be free!
I saw Andy and his band a few years back and I had a great night. Really enjoyed it. I'm probably a lot younger than some of the people here but I enjoyed it for my part. Its sad to have two camps and all of that. I can understand people's perspective who grew up in 70s or werw fans from the beginning and so on but for my part Andy's been kind ,supportive and inspirational as a guitarist and musician. So yeah. I get where people are coming from here but I'm happy to go see Andy and his guys do their thing as well and I'm sure I'd enjoy it again . I kmow its different for me being younger (in my 40s) but I just thought I'd throw my hat in the ring with a little support for them. I can appreciate where people are coming from here though. I have that perspective with other bands where I was there at their peak and things have subsequently changed .
Martin Turner really was an intrinsic part of WA. His voice was iconic and the band was never the same without him.
I've seen various members of Gentle Giant interviewed many times here on RUclips and it always seems like the people doing the interviews aren't really prepared. They either ask the same questions that have been asked by literally everyone, and anyone who knows the band already knows the answers, or they aren't really that familiar with them to begin with. Everyone in this band was extremely talented and they're music is extremely interesting and original yet no one seems to be able to ask truly relevant questions or come at the interview from a different perspective
He's the main singer in the band
Martin is my man...love em and WAsh
Martin sounds a bit like Jon Anderson - or vice versa. What if Led Zeppelin got rid of Robert Plant? Ded Zeppelin!
Saw Andy’s band twice in past 7-8 years. The shows were good. Obviously the original band was best. I thought the vocals back then were superb. Andy, Martin , Ted & Steve blended well. I thought Andy & Ted’s twin leads were awesome. One thing bugs me. Andy & Martin have terrible teeth. Surely y’all can afford a dentist 😂
For me, Wishbone Four in 73 signalled the end of the best. First saw them at the Subs in Stroud & Bardsney in Lincoln in 1972 when they were at their exciting best. Steve Upton on the drums was another Ginger Baker sensation but then they fell apart in 74. I thought I'd missed out, until years later I watched performances on RUclips, and realised they'd become a poor tribute band of the pre 74 originals. I still have my Wishbone, Argus, Live Dates & Wishbone 4 LPs & the CDs to fall back on & play in the car today. Always thought Martin was a brilliant bass, stretched as a singer. The sound, pitch & performance must track the originals.
Martin is Roger Waters to Andy’s Dave Gilmour.
So, according to Martin, its not ok to sing vocals you didnt write because you cant do it with feeling, but you can use any guitarist to play the notes you didnt write and you can do that with feeling. This guy is so full of shit it is ridiculous. And Mart should re-name his band to No Service Dogs Allowed, because the dogs would start howling and make better notes than he does.
How has no one seen this! I love getting to hear from this great band. That album is amazing and I can’t wait for the next one
Both Andy and Martin have really good musicians on board. But, the magic of 'the old days' are gone in both bands. I prefer watching the videos with Andy, Ted, Martin, Laurie and Steve.
I met Andy Powell in Dublin about 15 years ago in the Village on wicklow Street downstairs and i thought Wishbone Ash were a brilliant band Just Testing 1980 that was my first introduction and I bought a lot of albums so for me Thin Lizzy Deep Purple AC /DC Wishbone Ash they were the outfits I liked best
Brilliant marriage of minds. Some amazing singles from Essex and Wayne.
Love GG and love Derek. Such a down to earth gental guy (pun intended)
Andy is americanised.THAT is the problem! Lost the British flavour. Arrogance amplified.
Wishbone Ash, isn't the same without you. Your bass playing is exceptional. ✌️👍
Thee best!!! Listen to HANDY.😊
I'd just like to say that Argus is still one of my favs and I always thought Martin and Ted were brothers
What Martin says about Andy Powell playing WA with his guys is exactly what I feel hearing it. He makes decent albums though. But on stage it feels really poor and lifeless, especially the old stuff. I'm happy Martin came back to play it properly.
One of the best bands ever
Mutual bitterness with a double twist of ego lemon is never going to taste sweet. What a pity that it didn't work out like Focus when Jan walked. 2023 shoes filled & still gigging
Sounds like sour grapes to me. I don't think Martin expected Andy to carry on and succeed with strong material and tours. Martin didn't believe in the band and left, and got bitter when Andy continued effectively. I don't understand people saying Martin is the soul when he didn't have enough soul in the band to believe carrying on in the first place. I saw AP Wishbone a few weeks back and it was still tight and a well oiled machine.
Beautiful interview
His description of the life cycle of a band is very apt.
It was not a good parting as per APs version. Pretty vindictive given Martin was the founding member.
Spartacus is a very different beast to the WOTWs. At first l hated it hearing it for the first time after l was so familiar and a huge fan if WOTWs. I thought this is awful. It eventually grew on me when l distanced it from WOTWs and l absolutely love both albums now. Both masterpieces in their own way. This virtually unknown album is sadly very underrated and underappreciated IMO. I hope Jeff leaves it alone though because l hated what he did with the new generation of WOTWs.
Andy’s band are far superior to Martin’s, sounds like sour grapes.
Just saw Andys W A tonight! Excellent! Sour Grapes. I’d say from Mr Turner. Bitter old man!
Andy’s w.a nowhere near as good as martins,in my opinion.
Having seen both bands, (Martin last night), He brings WA alive as remembered by us oldies. Andy's band just lacks passion.
I'm sure Martin is right. I saw Powell's band in Walthamstow in 1999. Martin's band is much better. More like proper Ash. Nick J
"Back Street Luv" was in the UK charts in September 1971 which is 52 years ago.
