I'm a Cape Town based South African railfan. I film videos mainly of Class 19D 3322 'Clare' operated by the Ceres Rail Company, but I also have a small collection of videos of Class 24 3655 'Jenny', operated by Ceres Rail, and Class 16DA 879 'Katie', operated by Atlantic Rail before the switch to Ceres Rail.

I've been wanting to do this trip for a while now, but I've finally done it. On the 29th Of June 2024, myself, my father, and railway/aerial photographer Shane Schwartz tracked the New Cape Central Railway's Class 24 3632 'Amanda' from Robertson to Nuy. The engine is co-owned by Dylan Knott and Ian Welch, and is named after Dylan's wife, Amanda. I apologize for the pretty bad wind noise in some...

10 Minutes Of Steam Locomotive Whistles
Просмотров 4133 месяца назад
For the last 2 years, I have been filming videos of Ceres Rail Company's Class 19D locomotive; number 3322, affectionately named 'Clare'. Over the 2 years, I have gathered enough footage to make a compilation solely consisting of whistles from the videos I've filmed. So here it is! Ten minutes straight of pure steam locomotive whistles!

Thanx : Great Video .... But may I humbly suggest that you invest in a Wind-Protector Cover for your microphone ... 🤙
Amazing! I haven't seen videos on this trip yet! Thanks!
We were on that trip - loved it - well done to /ceres rail and the team at Mamreweg!
Speeding over a green Swartland
Mamreweg
Departure is awesome ,showing all the steam 👌 😎
Took the Ceres steam train to Mamre yesterday [24th September 2024] Heritage Day trip to Darling Wine Cellars at Mamre. Hugely enjoyable. Travelled on the Trans Karoo in the early 1960s - 1963? - when I think the class 25 condensers were in operation at Beaconsfield? I miss the smell of a real coal fire in the fire box, but understand the reason for converting to oil. Of all the trips that I've done with the Ceres train, the trip to Ceres itself has been the best.
Great to hear! Video of the trip to Darling is coming soon!
@@MichaelShannon3322 Great - look forward to seeing it.
My father would have loved this video He passed 8/8/23
Thank you. May he rest in peace 🙏

Nice video, it actually looks like it was filmed a long time ago
Thanks! The scenery and lack of modern infrastructure really sells the look.
@@MichaelShannon3322 sure does!
0:41 nice whistle 👍
Nice video, thanks for sharing. Robertson station looks good. Looking forward to more steam videos.
Love it , thanks
Never seen green coaches before in SA.
The old blue train coaches that became the Drakensberg in 1972 were a similar green livery.
No way, steam locos are running again! I'll have to get myself a ticket!
bro has a TERRIBLE camera
My camera films in HD quality, it's really not that bad. Besides, I don't have much of a choice.
Golden video
Thanks you so much!
Good one👍
Wow good 👍❤
What route did you take from Capetown departure to southern peninsula track? Did you travel via Retreat station ?
The train heads from Cape Town to Belville, turns around at Belville towards Maitland. Just past Maitland, it takes the line that passes Observatory, Rondebosch etc. This passes through Retreat on the way to Simon's Town. They take the same route back from Simon's Town to Cape Town.
What sound equipment are you using at the moment?
I'm currently stuck with the built-in microphone on my camera because it doesn't have any input ports
You really had a tough time with the wind. This for me was our best chase in ages. A huge thank you to Neil for driving us.
A 19 Dolly without the Vanderbilt tender is a disaster.
Awesome 🤩
My favourite video so far. 👌
So mooi... SAR / SAS lokomitiewe het die mooiste fluite in die hele wêreld
Baie dankie! Ja, hulle fluite is so pragtig hier!
@@MichaelShannon3322 Jip! Jy moet 'n video van die "Jenny" gaan maak as jy kan. Sy loop tussen Hartenbos en Grootbrak. Haar fluit is pragtig.. Dis my gunstelling fluit.
@@Antloo2009 Ja!

@@MichaelShannon3322 Ooo oukei nou verstaan ek 😆👍🏻
Could have been decent video--GET YOUR AUDIO TOGETHER
Are you gonna pay for it, buddy? Cause right now I know I can't.
So wonderful to see someone is making the effort to keep these beauties going. Well done.
I once was pulled by a dolly between Vryburg and Mafeking with 13 coaches, the climb out of Vryburg was slow but it didn't slip and once on the planes it was just like the video.
Goeie,ou dae.
I am going to be there in a few days 🙌this is very interesting 😅
Why were there two diesel locos being hauled as well. So many more tons being hauled???
The diesel units are used as the steam loco itself doesn't have enough power to make it over the gradients on Sir Lowry's Pass.
@@MichaelShannon3322 Thanks for info. Perhaps less coaches would solve that problem?? Regards
@@IO-zz2xy Perhaps, although even with 13 coaches, it still is quite busy almost every weekend.
@@IO-zz2xy They actually had to add the 13th coach recently, because it was getting full with only 12.
@@MichaelShannon3322 I'm not surprised. Great news, what a great journey. Regards from Howick, KZN
Nice. Is there no longer a wye in Malmesbury?
As far as I'm aware, no, there isn't
Gee, that oil-burner gives off a mess!
Magnificent catches of the train coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars. Thumbs up. Keep up the perfect work, my friend, just liked and subscribed, Greetings from Portugal to South Africa.
Thanks very much!
@@MichaelShannon3322 no problem.
@@MichaelShannon3322 the trains in your country are amazing.
Nice
The wind was pretty hectic on this day.
Shoutout to everyone who waved in Coach 11!
Keep out of the wind .
Yeah, the problem with that area is that it's out in the open, so there's no real way to avoid the wind
Nice compilation there Michael. I see I make an unknowing appearance 😅
Ah yes, I didn't realise you were filming. I just watched your video from the same day. You got some nice shots in there.
I travelled this route from Cape Town to Elgin on an S&V Camp in 1955, and it was pulled by a single steam loco. Why did this trip have to incorporate the assistance of TWO DIESEL-ELECTRIC units (or so it would seem)? I am now eighty years young, and am still loving everything to do with steamers!
The diesel units are used as the steam loco itself doesn't have enough power to make it over the gradients on Sir Lowry's Pass. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you
Why does it carry the oil thing behind its tender ( l don’t know what it’s called) ?
It's a water tanker. It stores extra water so that the engine can refill at Elgin.
I was thinking it was that because the The Flying Scotsman had it
@@Cool123nt Yes, although Flying Scotsman's one is designed to look like a second tender.
Beautiful train mind go to fast .
I travelled on this line from CT to Botrivier when it was still up and running during the earlygb 1960s, and once from Lebanon siding or Grabouw to CT in early 1967. I was a pupil forester at Lebanon forest st. about 20 km east of Grabouw and was travelling officially to George to study forestry at the foresters college. It took more than 5 hours to reach Cape Town. From there I took the "milk train" to George, slept on the train overnight and arrived the afternoon of the following day. That was the steam train era. Today they would call it laid by. But looking back it was a wonderful era. The landscape was not nearly as built up as today. The steam locos regularly ignited fires in the Grabouw forestry plantations in summer, in spite of spark arrestors.
Ah yes, the golden age of steam. Wish I could've been around to see it.
Interesting, I always wondered when passengers still went on that line.
