Sangha!
Sitting together is central to developing out practice: it’s far from impossible sitting on your own, but the experience of sangha offers a deep extra dimension, which has made it one of the traditional 3 jewels of Buddhist practice.
A sangha centred on Zoom has new opportunities and challenges, and the Ordinary Mind perspective itself offers us a fresh sense of what Sangha can be, as well as highlighting some potential problems.
How can we deepen and enrich our practice of sangha together in a way that fits, for each of us, our own ordinary ‘life as it is’?

'We are all already Buddhas!' - nice! Or... we all have Buddha Nature... yes, but what do we mean by this, and where does the idea come from? Our Ordinary Mind practice depends on us staying with the 'right here, right now', rather than looking to a supposed higher reality. Are we willing to do this? The Ultimate Truth!

If 'Emptiness' is a dangerous idea, the solution is to understand that emptiness is itself 'empty', by which we don't mean 'unreal' or 'non-existent.'. In fact as the Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna (himself sometimes described as the 'Second Buddha' ) shows, a world of 'real' fixed, separate things is impossible, and in order for there to be anything at all, for there to be causality and cohere...
Emptiness of Emptiness Part 1

What happens when a key Buddhist concept gets misunderstood? The Dharma is often described as 'poisin', and the Buddha reminds us that there is a right and a wrong end to pick up a poisonous snake (always by its head!). 'Emptiness' is perhaps the most poisonous of all ideas - but what goes wrong in our understanding, and where does it lead? 'A Dharma Safety Talk'. If you have found this talk he...

Minding Our Gap

For the diverse individuals who make up our sangha, with Juneteenth in mind! Last week I explored the gap we feel between 'life as it is' and my life as I want it to be as both the problem AND the solution. So what about when this gap is a manifestation of misogyny, racism, ableism and the other ills of our society? If you have found this talk helpful, please consider supporting our work: we ar...

A reading of the second part of Malcolm's commentary on the Third Zen Precept: Desire and Intimacy. We don't always want what we want to want, nor do we always want to want what we do want!.... This second part looks at 'Gender' as one aspect of the domination of Mastery, in relation to sexual harming. How do we Bear Witness to this, as individuals, as a society? Thank you for showing the nuances and depth of judgement. It's easy to fall prey of easy and shallow understanding of much deeper concepts and ideias, I'll keep watching your videos in hopes of learning something. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this video! Because I am addicted to the feeling of emptiness 🤔 and I am wondering if meditation can help me drop the paradoxical adrenaline fuelled search to give life meaning while attempting to bear witness to the emptiness I seek? Strange concept.

Greetings from Finland. I like listening to Buddhist teaching (dharma). Some people call it Zen. It is very relaxing to me. First I listened to Thic Nhat Hanh (Vietnam). I am a Christian by identity (Finnish Lutheran). Siddharta Gautama (Buddha) was a king in India. It depends where Buddha originates from, depending of whom you ask. Some people say Buddha was from Nepal. In ancient times, kings were practicing wisdom. Siddharta Gautama (Buddha) shares some resemblance with the old Jewish King Solomon. He was very wise and rich. King Solomon ruled in ancient Israel according to Christian tradition. In Siddharta Gautamas time (600 BCE), kings were commonly competing in wisdom. Buddhism is 600 years older than Christianity. Peace. 1Kings 4:29 (Douay-Rheims Bible) And God gave to Solomon wisdom, and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, as the sand that is on the sea shore. 30 And the wisdom of Solomon surpassed the wisdom of all the Orientals, and of the Egyptians; 31 And he was wiser than all men: wiser than Ethan, the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Dorda, the sons of Mahol, and he was renowned in all nations round about.

Thank you Malcolm! I was reflecting on your comment about the tension on the realization of death - eventual death - but also the unknown time of it. We seem to be living 'in the gap' of these two realities. A funny memory came floating up of a past trip to London and using 'The Tube' to get into town from Heathrow. The automatic voice warning of "MIND THE GAP" coming over the intercom and printed on the floor tiles - reminded that perhaps this is a suggestion for use all! LOL! "Minding the Gap" is a powerful meditation and mantra for sure - that goes beyond safely using 'The Tube' - A metaphor nested in another metaphor perhaps? Thanks for getting my rusty brain moving! :-)
