Coldest Gravel Ride Ever! | MTB to Gravel Conversion
In this episode we are braving the coldest day of the year, to ride gravel bikes on the icy trails, for our coldest gravel ride ever!
#mtb #gravelbike #cycling #wintercycling #cyclinglife
I’m riding my GT Palomar Gravel conversion, with its upgraded 650b wheels for extra grip - not that it’s gonna help me on this one!
We managed a good 30 miles of gravel and I managed to fall off twice - so a good time was had.

Building a resto mod winter road bike - 80s tribute to my bro
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.14 дней назад
In this episode I’m building an awesome resto mid winter road bike, and a tribute to my big brothers bike of the 1980s! The plan is to take a quality Reynolds 531 frame and make a resto mod Raleigh equipe replica that will handle winter riding. Now I know I’m still using some carbon rims here - a bit Gucci for a winter trainer, but I was given them by Pickerings bikes, so I thought - why not!! ...
Building an awesome 650b Randonneur bike for long rides!!

I’ve decided in the episode to build a randonneur style bike on a bit of a whim - after I found some 650b tyres cheap on eBay! So I’ve taken this Roger Page frame, that’s I’ve owned for more than 8 years and am transforming it into a 650b mile muncher - ready for long days in the retro saddle. I’ve specced this one up with loads of Campagnolo, and some centre pull brakes. I’ve also converted th...

In todays episode I’m upgrading my flat bar gravel bike with some spicy upgrades, in the shape of some Shimano XTR, hydraulic brakes and huge 47c Specialized rhombus tyres. With winter closing in, the test ride is a night ride type affair on the local trails, but before that I need to handle mating promax calipers to older XTR levers, do the internal routing, add all the 9 speed gubbins and tal...

      Thanks for watching! I’ve since changed the workshop around considerably if you take a look at my more recent videos - although I’m not sure if that’s going to be what you’re looking for. As my main workshop, I’ve probably added more to my back wall to suit my workspace, as it has to function for that as well as my videos too. As the first person to mention it, it’s not something that has come along before, and I’m not sure a totally plain background would look so good in the shot, but please take a look at the newer videos and let me know 🙂

    I really like yours gravel bike videos. I’m thinking to join the gravel club( im from Kent) I have option to buy the CDA 10 but found Genesis Croix De Fer 20 2023 model on a sale for a £999. Do you think is worth to add the extra ££ to get the higher model? Again I’m not a pro but have so many hills around me and want to get a decent bike to have for few years. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 11 дней назад

      Thanks very much dude, in my opinion, if you can afford the croix de fer 10, I’d go for it at that money - that’s a serious bit of bike for £1000, they steel frame will be more comfortable and compliant too. I plan to move my CDA on soon and go for a croix de fer series of videos eventually too!

      @ thank you so much for the replay. Really appreciate it, as don’t have any friends around me who have any clue about bicycle and I really wanna get into it. Croix de fer 10 vs Croix de fer 20 - Shimano Sora 9 speed vs Shimano Grx 10 speed . CdF10 £830 vs CdF20 £999 What about the group set? I know you have upgraded your CDA but if you will have a choice to get a CdF would you choose the grx version ? I don’t have a clue if that extra speed will give me anything 😅 but how I said I have hills around, so would be nice to get a better one but not so sure if is worth to pay the extra £130 to get the cdF 20. Unfortunately I have only two bike shops near me and none of them dealing with genesis bikes.

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 11 дней назад

      @kubajuraszek5817 no problem at all, happy to help, if you can stretch to the GRX groupset, go for it - it’s gravel specific and excellent quality. However Sora 9 speed is rock solid and reliable but is a road/gravel groupset. Other than the different groupsets, the frame will be the same of course, and the finishing kit like bars and stem wouldn’t be different either

    • @20yearsagotoday1
      @20yearsagotoday1 11 дней назад

      @kubajuraszek5817 just adding my thoughts on the CDF. I had one and sorry, I hated it. It was such a heavy frame and made the bike not enjoyable to ride at all. I upgraded the groupset, wheels, discs, shifters and yet still found it such a sluggish ride. I ended up stripping everything off it and threw the frame in the skip! I’m just building up a Sonder Camino gravel bike and by all the reviews it’s going to be a great bike. Hope you get sorted whatever you pick 👍🏼

Ok, so what you’re looking for with the converter (if I remember correctly!) is to thread the cable through the converter so that the cable exits at between 1 and 2 o’clock (if the converter were a clock face) before you then attach the cable to the brake bolt on the v-brake Hope that helps!!

    I love such winter builds with full size mudguards. I have a similar one - a peugeot ferrara. A sturdy rig out of Columbus tubes which I've been trashing in all terrain only during winters for the last 10 years. the frame still holds on although last year I had to do some bodged paint touchups here and there as the rust started to chew it in. Storing it in a moist basement does not help too. I suppose it looks terrible on the inside but as long as it does not rust through I'll keep trashing it. I am also using cantilevers (xlc). They are all ok, but in no comparison to discs, all the more hydraulic ones. The only issue I have with them is the front fork falling into nasty back and forth vibrations under strong braking, but I was told this is typical for canti brakes as when applied they effectively bow the fork when the cable is pulled upwards and this is why v-brakes were invented.

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 17 дней назад

      That’s what’s so great about old steel, it just keeps going and going, plus it’s comfortable and versatile too! I’m sure your Peugeot will keep going for a long while yet - you could always spray a little rust inhibitor inside to keep it from deteriorating. As for your fork vibration, help is at hand! If you switch you cable outer stop from the head tube to the top of the fork with a mount there it will solve all your problems - I had to do this with my single speed gravel bike and it worked a treat

    • @qwertyazerty2137
      @qwertyazerty2137 17 дней назад

      @@Downhillsmoothtarmac thanks. In fact I have such a cable stop from tektro which is installed at the top of the fork crown where the mudguard top retention bolt goes through. I haven't actually thought if these vibrations are gone. For sure they were present when I had a cable stop underneath the stem as a counter spacer between top bearing locknut and the upper race with that notch going into the cut out in the steerer tube. I got to check it out

    • @Downhillsmoothtarmac
      @Downhillsmoothtarmac 17 дней назад

      If you cable stop at the fork it should in theory remove the judder, which is caused by the fork wobbling over the ground and slowly applying and releasing the brake as the cable pressure is changed due to the distance between the calipers and the cable stop being able to change

    • @qwertyazerty2137
      @qwertyazerty2137 17 дней назад

      @@Downhillsmoothtarmac and this is probably why this problem is not the case with v-brakes in which the cable stop is right next to the caliper and Not attached to the steerer tube. But, as much as I like to ride on this bike, its comfort is incomparable to my modern aluminium gravel bike with a carbin fork and wheels. The stiffness at the handlebar, fork and bottom bracket and overall vibrations' dampening and comfort(also thanks to wider tires ran at lower pressure because of tubeless) is noticebly better. Not to mention vastly superior braking thanks to hydraulic disc brakes.

      I totally understand where you’re coming from! I always wondered what colour it was as a galaxy! But you’re right it’s going to get ridden a lot and enjoyed (I hope!) I can’t wait to finish the next one either!

      Agreed, it doesn't matter what it was it's now a Raleigh so unless the decals are removed "if" he wants to sell it, it is what it is.

    Lovely simple bikes - would love to see something similar return. I've still got a Raleigh Record Sprint in the shed......

      They’re great frames to work on, lightweight too - plus the fact they handle modern components just goes to show they were built to last…

    Came out great. Those matchy-matchy fenders look pretty slick.

    The dawes is great. I did basically the same on a Horizon. Different Reynolds steel tubing but same geometry as the Galaxy. Both seat tube and top tube 72,5 angle. Pretty modern angles. And i love the fact that my large 64cm frame has a relatively short top tube. I ride mine with 36 mm tires. Makes for a great ride, love it. Yours is more beautiful i must say. Well done mate!

      Thanks so much mate! I’m really pleased with how it turned out - can’t wait to get out and ride it. Funnily enough, I’m doing a Dawes Horizon next - making a gravel flavoured custom build type thing - great quality frames

    looks amazing I have a 74 super course as my winter bike that I also built up as a resto mod. I just love the classic raleigh decals.

      Thanks man! There’s something so cool about the old Raleigh decals! I’m also loving how folks are still using these old frames as winter bikes too 👍👍

    Lovely work, though I do have a twinge for the now hidden Galaxy! Had a Raleigh Competition 501 when I raced and later as a winter bike back in the late 80s. Great tough bike. Real survivor.

      Thanks very much! I must admit if it was a galaxy in original paint I couldn’t have done that to it. I’ve got a 501 pro race waiting in the wings for a build soon too 😎
