The two immature anhinga are visible near the end of the video, at first I did not know what these two birds where, my friend Kristin, identified the two birds as immature anhinga, the other white birds are Great Egrets. 4 K drone video taken at back of Holt Lake NC.

This nest was the 5th live streamed Wood Duck nest of 2014. It was very unusual because 2 hen Wood Ducks named Rachel and Patty incubated the eggs day and night. 18 out of 23 eggs hatched the morning of 6-28-14. This was the fourth and final Wood Duck jump from Woodiecam1 of the 2014 nest season. Wood Duck Aurora hatched 7 of 11 eggs (One previously removed) after 30 days of incubation. This nest had 7 Hooded Merganser eggs, 8 Wood Duck eggs and was incubated by a Hooded Merganser. I used my Canon VIXIA R 300 camcorder with an inverter and small battery to capture the jump on 5-8-14.

    There were not any Anhinga nests in the Rookery last year. This year there are about 4. Most of the immature Anhinga are mostly black but this particular one is mostly white with black wing tips and a black tail.

    😠the last chick suffered too much because of whoever made this box it would have been necessary to put a mesh in front of the hole inside to help the chicks to climb.

      Hi Loonlady, Good to see you. I was looking for an Eagle nest and stumbled upon this Rookery. Lots more Merganser nests this year but I didn't take any videos. The Prothonotary Warbler nesting was terrible I think because of the record breaking spring drought. Rup.

    I know this is an older video, but how in the world are there 2 different kinds of ducklings in one nest? I’m very curious. I’m building nest boxes now for my pond.

      It is fairly common to have Wood Duck and Merganser eggs in the same box. Both nest in hollow tree cavities and use the boxes and both start nesting at about the same time of year, starting late January here in NC.

      They stay out and feed on animal matter. It takes 10 weeks to fly. Less than half reach flight stage.

      Hooded Mergansers like the boxes facing out toward the open water. Wood Ducks prefer the boxes in the thicker, back part of the lake.

      They don't. The baby Mergansers and Wood Ducks eat animal matter around the lake shore. It takes about 8 weeks before they can fly and only about 20% survive to become adults.

      The baby Wood Ducks probably abandoned the brood the first day out of the box. I have about 50 boxes on the lake and I see several nests every year with Wood Duck and Merganser eggs incubated by Mergansers or Wood Ducks.

      They are Cypress trees and are not rare but are found only in certain lakes and streams south of North Carolina and Virginia.
