Wow, that was a really interesting demonstration. I'm really interested to know why you were clearly sure the queen was mated? There must be some chance she was not the original mother queen from that colony off a prime swarm. Is there no chance it was a cast?

I had to rewatch video since it was over a year ago. In this case the swarm came from the colony i pointed out. Nothing is 100% in beekeeping but being the size if the swarm and it was wintered in that medium and deep that i believe i had rotated a few weeks earlier the odds of it being the queen from previous year is better than 95%. If it was an after swarm with a virgin queen it would have been much smaller.

@randallcarter-carterhillho2277 so the swarm I caught and put in the hive left and went back into the tree. So I used this idea the next time. They are now safe and at my house. One question, it was easier to get them, but it was much harder to get them out. They clung to the mesh. Any suggestions?

I was a bit dubious at first but after seeing how good the bees were in your catcher i must admit its simplicity in design makes it truly genius. The bees dont get agrivated because they stay in a neat little ball. Have seen some bee keepers use a veiled straw hat on low hanging limbs in the past and that worked very well too so I should not have been a doubter. Sorry about that. Great video too. Thanks for sharing

Drawn combs i start putting on in early march. For you that might be roughly feb 20th as you will be a good 2 weeks ahead of me in spring build up. allow broodnest to expand up thru 2.5 mediums.(i run single deeps.) Then in early april i shake bees down to first medium, move all brood as low as possible in mediums, and add queen excluder. If timed properly it should eliminate 90% of swarming and makes much bigger honey crops if you do not want to take early splits. If you take splits that is fine but yiu will not get as much honey. Foundations i do not add til last week of april, check weekly and add more as needed. By june 10th foundation drawing with natural nectar will be over. There needs to be heavy nectar flow for them to get drawn.

Finally- finally some ingenuity. I’ve been watching these bee removal videos for one week now, first person to utilize creativity. I think when e hit the limb, the bees dropped a small amount of distance. The mesh provides familiarity. They don’t even know what happened. As long as the queen stays in there he’s good to go.
