National NC-121 tuning through all four bands
Просмотров 1044 года назад
Selling this nice little NC-121. I tune through all four bands, starting at the BCB. The antenna is about 100 feet of wire up in the trees at my QTH in Camino, California. The time was about 3:30 PM, an hour or so before sunset.

RCA C8-19

The first power up after restoring my 1936 RCA C8-19 console radio. Song is "The Hut Sut Song" by Sammy Kaye and the Kaydets. The radio's chassis was rusty, and much cleanup work was required to make it look good again. All new electrolytic capacitors were installed in the set's original aluminum tubes to maintain a factory look. Underneath, the wax/paper capacitors were all replaced, as were t...

Hallicrafters BC-669

The first power up and testing of my BC-669's receiver section after the radio was restored. I'm currently working on building a working TS-11L handset from parts I have on hand. I am missing the required RM-21 remote unit that the handset plugs into, so until one of those can be found, I'm going to bodge together a temporary set of connectors to allow me to test the transmitter. Stay tuned for...
DM-28Q Dynamotor Startup
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.10 лет назад
Finally got the DM-28 dynamotor for my BC-348 up and running. Had a big problem with a stuck brush. The brush wasn't making contact with the commutator. After a 2-week soaking in WD-40, the thing still wouldn't budge. I had to completely disassemble the dynamotor and drive the brush out from the inside. The unit was then cleaned, lubricated and reassembled. The bearings were cleaned in an ultra...

    I know it has been a few years, but I found your video, because I could not figure out, how to connect the antenna, because all of my wires were missing.I was able to figure it out, using your video. Your explanation of the operation was well done also.

    09:28 Seeing that output tube all scorched like that reminded me of something I read about: back in the day some folks would build radio transmitters with metal power output tubes such as the good ol' 6L6 in the final RF output stage and would get increased RF power by over-voltaging the tube and building the transmitter chassis so the tube's metal envelope would be suspended upside-down in a can of mineral oil in order to help keep the envelope and it's contents cooled.

    I re-did my grandma's C8-19. I love it. Did you end up replacing the long multi-tap voltage divider resistor? I didn't, and I still get some occasional static "tics", even with the volume down, that I suspect might originate there. Do you have some sort of transmitter your using to feed it signal? Did you ever get anywhere with the cabinet finish? Mine needs work as well. Oh, and I think you'll find the left control is the volume, and the right control is power + tone (OFF + 3 tone positions). Before I recapped, the tone control had no effect, and without a label it was a real mystery to me why it had a four position on/off switch!

      Hi Steve, no, the "Candohm" multi-tap resistor was fine on mine, so I left it. I know a lot of people advocate replacing them, regardless of how they test...something about the paper they wrap the wire-wound element in going acidic and eating through the windings...but I've never had an issue with it. On your set, popping regardless of volume setting could be an intermittent in the Candohm, or it might be a mica capacitor going bad somewhere. You can power up the radio out of the cabinet, and CAREFULLY use something insulated to gently push around and prod the contacts of the Candohm to see if it's the origin of your noises. If it is, physically moving them around with the set powered up should cause the symptom to occur. Just be careful, you don't want to 'ride the lightning'. I never got around to doing anything major on the cabinet. I did reglue some veneer that was lifting, but decided it didn't warrant a full refinish. You're indeed correct, the far left control is volume. Mea culpa! I feed my antique radios signal via an SSTRAN AM Transmitter connected to the computer.

    • @N6MKC
      @N6MKC 4 года назад

      I kind of just put the word out with all of my ham radio/military radio friends, and waited. The items I needed eventually showed up. The PE-110 power cable and the RM-21 handset were the hardest items to find. I had to make a TS-11L handset out of parts. The inline choke is a model used on other signal corps transmitters, so it was easier to find than a complete TS-11 handset.

      The Radio Pleasure Palace I’m just trying to find the power supply and the cable I have the rest of them very very hard to find looking all over online and not any luck

    • @N6MKC
      @N6MKC 4 года назад

      @@srihlman2006 The PE-110s show up with some regularity. They're incredibly heavy, so finding one at a local ham swap is going to be the way to go...you don't want to have to ship one. The power supply to receiver/transmitter cable (the number escapes me at the moment) is VERY difficult to find, but, you can ship one quite cheaply, so finding one online is the way to go. Post want-ads on the usual radio-related sites, and be patient. You'll have to wait a while for one to show up. Worst case scenario, you could always make a temporary cable just to get the radio running.

      I was really impressed with this unit's performance once it was recapped and aligned. I think you will be too. Just watch out for chafing on the wires going to the speaker through the metal grommet in the chassis. It was creating an intermittent short on mine that was tricky to track down. Wound up replacing all of the speaker/field coil wires.

    I just fixed my Zenith 9H885 console which is quite a similar chassis but with the added 9th phono osc tube and yeah I pretty much ended up rewiring 98% of the chassis starting off with all the radio gran wiring. Took me quite a long time but this radio performs quite well and I'm sure yours does now.

    I wanted to cry when I saw the inside what a mess. LOL I've worked with electronics and I was hi Rel certification solder technician. Even worked on some 15 layer pc boards. Being able to work from semantics I was able to rewire my friend's Harley are he burt the wiring. Not only worked with electronics I'm also used to work on cars and motorcycles. My brothers told me if I couldn't work on it I couldn't drive it. Funny over the years I found I knew more about car repair than a lot of men. I've met some that have never done any kind of work not even change a flat tire. LOL But it seems now days they've made it where you have to have a mechanic do the work in fear of damaging the computer system.

    Hey and greetings from Bavaria, Germany. Just overhauled a DM 28. Replaced the ball bearings by a modern Type 626-2Z from SKF.. What you assume to be commutator noise in my case turned out to be bearing noise. After replacing the bearings, my DM 28 is now quiet as a little mouse in the church. Best regards, Rainer, DJ9EP.

    Beautiful job! Just got my BC-669B and PE110 on the air. Lots of work but well worth it. Yours is prettier than mine ;-). The "TRANSMITTER" light is wired to the Transmitter filament circuit, so it should be on. The receiver bandwidth is much sharper than that of many other WWII sets, so the 385 KC IF needs to be set properly. Transmitter tune-up is a bit of a chore but if one follows the manual, it's not so bad.

    • @N6MKC
      @N6MKC 8 лет назад

      +David Stinson Thanks David. Yes, the tune up is indeed a chore. Luckily for me, I only use the set on a couple of frequencies, so once the tune-up is done, nothing ever changes (unless I choose to use a different antenna). Have got a promising lead on an RM-21 remote/handset for the setup, so hopefully I won't have to keep using my banana plug lash-up I've been using for the last few years. More on my website, n6mkc.com Cheers, Jason

    Hi Nice restoration and good to see another BC-669 coming back to life. I have a 669 too, bought from a French dealer along with the PSU, cable and RM-21 and in the original transit cases. Although the speaker has the "h" logo, the set appears to have been made by ERL. The radio is marked in French and I believe it was one of a number bought to be used as reserve marine sets, and certainly the frequencies marked on the channel card are in the old MF band. I have a fault on the band 1 RX at the moment but I have had the set on-air on 3705 kc which is one of the European AM activity spots. 73 Roger/G3VKM - Norfolk, England.
