Love Is Tears: the tragi-comic vision of CS Lewis with Jahdiel Perez
Was C.S. Lewis a legitimate "theologian"? Did Jesus ever "laugh"? Is hope just an "escape" from the present? What kind of "vision" of life can hold in tension both tragedy and comedy? And what does beloved "Puddleglum" have to do with it? Come! Step into the wardrobe with me and find out as I speak with Lewisian scholar and friend, Dr. Jahdiel N. Perez. I first met Jahdiel when I was studying at The OCCA, The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics (he was studying his DPhil at Oxford University). It is a true joy to explore his finished work all these years later.

    I was a Sri Lankan Hindu, who studied in a Grammar School in Harrow, London in the 70's. Although it was a Catholic school, I had the opportunity to be really exposed to some Bible and even the chapel. I came from a nominal Hindu family and I truly felt at home praying in the chapel, for it was quiet and peaceful during lunch time. This was in stark contrast to the temple, where everything was chaotic and the priest muttering in 'tongues', where I never felt at home and never had any true connection with any one of the 300+ million gods. The seed was sown, but it took years (19 yrs) before it came to fruition. I went back to Sri Lanka, for my parents were not much enamoured of the rat-race. Nevertheless, the civil war back in Sri Lanka brought me to Australia in 1988. During the civil war, in SL, I determined to read the Bible from the very beginning- Genesis and by the time, I finished the 5 books, it struck me like a bolt of lightning that Hinduism has borrowed heavily from Judaism and the last thing I wanted to do was to follow a faith, that was bogus for a start, with idolatry, which I had understood brings cruses and damnation and which was not leading me to Heaven, but to the Lake of fire. I really wanted to turn my back on my heritage and embrace Christ then and there; It was easier said than done. when I was at my lowest point in my personal life, I had an encounter with the Lord and the next month I converted with my mum and son and the following month, we, three, got water baptized-that was June 1992. Since that time, I have never looked back. We became Born Again, Bible-believing Christian. As a Hindu, I had been seeking God, but never found Him among the cacophony of idols and occult traditions and bizarre mythologies. On the other hand, the Bible is the truth and I feel that I have been exposed to the Truth and thankful for that. I have peace in my heart and assurance that, if I were to die today, my sins are paid by Jesus and I would be in Heaven. I don't have to worry about being turned into a cockroach in my next incarnation or forced to worship gods, who are adulterous, cheats or blood lusting beings. These thing really put me off, that is because as the Bible states, "Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love," (Eph 4:1) and Jesus broke my chains and gave me that elusive peace, that always eluded me as a Hindu. Jesus is standing at the door and knocking at our hearts, if only we would take the step to open the door for Him and be saved for eternity.

      Christianity is for people who want to be irresponsible and keep on sinning with the wrong hope that Jesus has died for their sins - past, present and future - while at the same time experiencing the consequence of their sins. Why the Holy Jesus is not making His followers Holy and Saintly, - look at the sexual abuse in Protestant and Catholic churches. On the other hand Hindus practices gives one a transcendental bliss, so you rise above the flesh gradually and consequently uninterrupted love for God. If the Holy Spirit is touching Christians like what Rahil claims He did - why it could not touch the great - Ravi Zacharias - who fell for flesh, at an advanced age? And the Catholic and Protestant pastors and bishops - sex abusers ? So, Christianity is about living in unreality and denial

It looks like you prefer a religion that keeps you subservient to a god and as a result stayed blinded to your righfull divinity. Bible promotes believing even blindly, in Bible as Word of God! And Jesus will forgive all your sins if you believe in Him. So, it is very palatable to people who can continue to do sins and dream that they will be forgiven even if they are facing the consequences of their sin and facing punishment.

    In my years before Islam, was never unhappy for more than a day and did not know anger. Islam taught me the religion of manliness, holding grudges, administering money and blood, revenge, retribution, and vengeance. That just leads to resentment, self pity, malevolence, misery sin and death. Went out west and had a long ponder about it, then went out east and turned it around in my mind to sort this rage inside. Recently, it occurred to me that perhaps this was the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil that I swallowed.

    • @kanhakanpur2360
      @kanhakanpur2360 Месяц назад

      If Genesis creation account is indeed true, then it tells that Adam and Eve were originally with God in His kingdom, and rebelled against Him and wanted to be like God! So, God orchestrated the Eden and snake and temptation to tell all people - that look - "All of you were with me in Kingdom! And much like Adam and Eve who ate forbidden fruit in the hope of being like God, you all have done the same thing in heaven". And as long as you do not surrender to God and want to be independent God, you will keep reincarnating. So - Genesis tells the Hindu Concept!

    So, the knowledge of good and bad/evil is divine: 1. discernment between good and bad/evil; 2. the application of the appropriate reward (blessing) and punishment (curse) as a consequence. The reason this is forbidden is because it has to be in line with God's will. By eating of the tree they did this by relying on their own will which is disastrous, hence death. Am I seeing this right?

There are plenty of ‘appealing’ ideas and philosophies in this world, but none provide the complete answers to life’s biggest questions, except Christianity, and only Jesus can bridge the gap between us and our Creator: “Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. I loved Rahil’s gentle admonishment to Christians about the modern Church’s departure from her contemplative and ‘mystic’ roots. For those who consider themselves practicing Christians and are sometimes confused or even concerned by the liberalisation of modern Christian practice and worship, I highly recommend AW Tozer as a source of clarity, in particular his books “The Pursuit of God” and “The Purpose of Man”.

      When Apostle Paul is egging on to his followers that believing in the idea that - Jesus came to be sacrificed for your sins, and your sins - past, present and future are forgiven if you believe in this concept (Faith Alone - Sola Fide). then why Christians will waste their time in doing - contemplation and meditation, when they can use that time to watch porn or do other things which satisfies there mind ?? Rahil is proposing that Christians should do meditation and contemplation for peace as he has experienced that in his training as an earlier Hindu monk. And Rahil, as soon as he became a Christian, has to disown the values of Hinduism and embrace Christianity ideas, so he is making a best effort there. The end point is Christianity is wrong as reincarnation is the nature of reality for all people - neither this is your first life not this is going to be your last life, unless you know how to get out of cycle of birth and death. For that you to read Bhagavad Gita and practice what Krishna advised!

    CS Lewis adds further clarity to this vital issue: “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

    “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” Hebrews 1:1-4

    Wow! I strongly disagree with everything you have said here. I could address it all, but it won't change your view. Tell me this: who is the congregation of Philadelphia? Here's who they are not: They are not widely known or regarded by the 'mainstream'. You know...all those on the busy, bustling highway...where everyone who is anyone, IS. Those from your beloved denominations, which make up the tree of variety (dare I say diversity...and...tolerance?) are not Philadelphia. I like to characterize denominations as 'demon-in-nations', both catchy and true. So, who is Phila (little understood and poorly regarded) which Christ LOVES, and who is the congregation of ha satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie. Jews here coded to mean something like 'the true inheritors', 'the legitimate sons', 'the natural branches', etc. Also, do some study on G3439 monogenes. It does NOT mean one and only which you misquoted. It means only begotten. The exact same usage as John 3:16 is at Heb 11:17 regarding Isaac. Isaac was the only begotten of Abraham and Sarah which was the promise (and therefore true) of God. He was not the one and only (which excludes begotten) because of Ishmael. Father God Almighty The Originator has other sons, The Word became Yeshua, is His only begotten One! amen Lastly, purgatory eh? Purgatory purge your sins? Well, that negates the cross of Christ and the shed blood, God forbid! Review deeply these five verses: Romans 6:7 (acquitted), Romans 6:23 (wages=earned payment in full), John 5:22, John 5:27, John 8:15. all glory comes from The Father!

    Thanks David. Helpful and encouraging. Echos of the Apostle Paul’s address to the intellectual elite of Athens 2,000 years ago, found in Acts 17: “The God who made the world and everything in it- he is Lord of heaven and earth- does not live in shrines made by hands. Neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives everyone life and breath and all things. From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live. He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being,”🙏

    When the Sacred Books were composed all Christians belonged to the Church established by Christ in 33 AD. The Reformation ended up rupturing the Body of Christ and started a totally different type of Christian. which did not accept the original Church of Christ.

    Thanks David. A verse that has helped me to keep the right focus as an ‘apologist’ for the Christian faith is Matt. 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” 🙏

    Christ established one Church only ( Body of Christ) on the foundation of the apostles in 33 AD. Except for the Schism of 1054 where the Church split into the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the western Catholic Church, the Catholic Church remained unchanged until the 16th century when the Reformation led by Martin Luther, split the Church again. many new man-made Churches and denominations began to appear after leaving the Catholic Church. The name Christian refers to all those who have been anointed through the gift of the Holy Spirit in Baptism, therefore the followers of Christ and members of the Church established by Christ in 33 AD Christ gave his apostles and their successors the authority to forgive sins. 'Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven. Whose sins you retain, they are retained" This is Scriptural, but Protestants refuse to believe this. Baptism is necessary for salvation. The Second Coming is Scriptural. The Church is the authority NOT the Bible. Protestants love to say that Catholics added books to the Bible.The Catholic Church did not add books to the Bible. The 7 books in question - Tobit. Judith. Naccabees 1 and 2. Wisdom. Eccleiasticus. and Bauruch - are properly called the Deuterocanonical Books. The label "unscriptural, " was first applied by the Protestants Reformers of the 16 th century. By the time of the Reformation, Christians had been using the same 73 books in their Bibles, and thus considered them "inspired". For more than 1100 years, this practice changed with Martin Luther, who dropped the Deuterocanonical Books on nothing more than his own say-so. Protestantism as a whole has followed his lead in this regard. One of the two "Pillars" of the Protestant Reformation, Sola Scriptura, or the Bible alone, in part states that nothing can be added or taken away from God's Word. History shows therefore that Protestants are guilty of violating their own doctrine. Christ said his Church (Body of Christ) would suffer great trials and persecutions on earth It will have its perfection in heaven. Roman Catholicism is NOT a denomination.Denominations are man-made.
