    When I use the key to open the lock I must press forward on the key fairly hard or it will not turn. I am thinking this keeps this lock unpickable. Does anyone else have this issue with the American ock?

    I completely agree.. the No. 3 seems such low quality, so gritty, and so inconsistent from lock to lock for a newbie. I persevered and when I got to the Master 140 as a yellow.. they seemed so easy. Much easier keyway on the 140 as well.

    #7 is actually a good lock to learn with but only because the keyway is so small. My first locks were rhe 140, 141D, and the #7. Then the Brinks brass, Abus 55/40, and the American Lock 1100 series.

    I don't understand how to pick that lock. I am a "beginner" lockpicke,r who has struggled on this lock for a year. I tried rocking it, picking the pins individually but it won't open. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, because the lock will open with the key. My sister who doesn't know anything about lockpicking, opened the lock with luck after I gave her a crashcourse. Since then we both haven't been able to open the lock by picking it. Sometimes it seems like I opened it because the core starts rotating just a bit, but then it suddenly stops. Do you have any advice?

    This was one of the very first locks I practiced on, having started with #3s like most pickers I imagine, and a Kwikset KiK. I learned that the 140/141 needed a far more gentle touch than their brute laminated cousins like the #3. The first 141D I had early on had a zero lift pin at position #2 and as a beginner it had given me a heck of a time. I actually bent the core out a little from over 'tensioning' w/ BOK, and after that it would bind up a lot. So I finally caught on and moved to TOK (also better for that zero lift pin), but I couldn't keep the pry bar in, as the recess is short. I wound up trying to make a cutaway out of that one and destroyed it, ah well. I made a ton of mistakes over that first month or so but also learned a ton from those mistakes. I bought another 141, and with a gentle touch, and better turning tool control, it's now a very reliable open.

    I agree that this has been a good lock for me as a beginner. I started with some MaterLock #3's but got nowhere with them. I actually sorta quit trying to learn lock picking for a few months after getting stuck on the #3. Also good to see more left handed pickers. That was also something that gave me problems as a beginner, as I couldn't figure out how to tension a lock comfortably. Watching you pick has given me some additional ideas on how to position and tension.

  • @LockSpaz
    @LockSpaz Год назад

    Aha, you've latched onto Master Locks master strategy, make a lock so sloppy and inconsistent that it can't reliably be picked! muahahaaa But in all seriousness, I have found some that SPP okay but more that are just mush in a laminated box; the worst of them tend to rake open in seconds but where's the fun/challenge in that?

      @LockSpaz Год назад

      I've got a #3 that's a comfort lock too, but also 2 more that are decidedly not. They're wildly inconsistently, and the older the lock is, the worse it'll be.. esp if used outside for any time.
