How To Make Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments - Whats Melting?
Welcome to Whats Melting?
In this upload I make a couple silver fumed hollow Christmas ornaments.
Find my Icicle ornament tutorial here ruclips.net/video/pF7tFTYB0A0/видео.html
The first ornament was made by fuming a blank of 32x4mm simax with .999 fine silver followed by adding dots of clear glass over the fume. Once the dots are finished next the piece is heated evenly and puffed out into a globe shape. It can take a few repeated steps of heating puffing and condensing the glass to blow out and nice even round shape. Once the ornament has been shaped I pop a hole near the blow tube to avoid a vacuum being created when the blow tube connection is condensed and closed up to form the loop of ...

Welcome to the third episode of Whats Melting? This time I'm getting into something a little more involved. Making a silver fumed coffee mug. Making drink ware is something I'm still learning so instead of a real tutorial I felt like this one be me thinking about cup making out loud. Mugs have been on my list of projects for a while and I finally got busy trying for the first time in the last c...
Glassblowing Implosion Pendant Tutorial - Whats Melting?

Welcome to Whats Melting? In this upload I go over the process of making a dot implosion pendant. I start with a blank of 32x4 simax and puff out a bubble on the end of the tube to set up for the dots. Then I pickup a couple coloured rods for the dots. This time I'm using a couple favourite colours, Galaxy and Karmaline from Northstar Glass. I carefully place the first dot as close to the centr...

Electrum wigwag pendant glassblowing tutorial - Whats Melting?
These are awesome please keep making them! As a beginner and self taught- these are incredibly helpful :) Great work
I am a self taught glass blower too. RUclips and a couple other webinars that I purchased a few years back is all I’ve known. So finally I feel like giving back to the community with more glass content so others can learn the way I did and also to connect with the glass community in a more meaningful way.
Cool..i use to love doing glass beads..im 80 and cant anymore...but it would be cool if you made some huge beads..or maybe a snowman ..or a snow flake for a tree...
I do make beads every so often. I’ll definitely share some here at some point. I made a snowflake ornament once as a custom order. I should try that again, it was a fun little project.
hell yeah. thank ya for the video quartz fume rod gang
@@ActivistTigers Quartz fume rods are definitely a great way to go. Get a lot more out of a bead of silver.
Would love to see a mushroom pendant video
I will have to get to that at some point.
Nice
Thank you, I’m really proud of how this one turned out.
Nice video 😊
Thanks! I’m gonna keep them coming.
Go live if u don’t have one for tomorrow:)
I definitely want to go live at some point, but wifi in the shop won’t let it happen
Awesome video! As a newer glassblower and do a lot on my own style! Very impressed and learning!
@@buddyshroom happy to share, I couldn’t have learnt what I know without RUclips so I hope I can do my best to give back the same kinda knowledge I found.
Hola from south of the border
Hola! Hope you’re doing well down there.
Great video! Keep it going!
@@buddyshroom That’s the plan! Thanks for checking it out.
Great video! Love all the camera angles. I do wish the audio was louder. Much love from Wisconsin.
Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it. You’re the second person to mention it and I was already worried that was the case. This one is a bit of an improvement on my last upload but I’m still figuring it out.
Where did you get the Karmaline ? Looked all thru Northstar’s website and can’t find it. Is it an out of production color?
@@robertosborn2458 it’s under Abe’s vault when you select what category of glass. Or plug #110 Karmaline into their search bar. I know it often sells put quickly. I just had a look myself and it’s sold out. I jumped on one of their last drops to make sure I didn’t run out. I use it a fair bit in my work.
@ oh! Ok I didn’t look there. Everything is aways sold out. I will start keeping an eye on that. Thanks
@ it can definitely be a bit of a challenge getting some of the most popular colours. Follow the colour companies on social media and hopefully you can scoop some when they drop.
@ I only saw that color in sluggers . Is that how you get it?
Yes, they don't sell rod. The furnace they use for pulling rod would strike the gold out in such a way that the colour would lose most or all of its transparency from what I understand.
I like long videos with music.
@@idela32 Thanks for the feedback. I will make some full length ones like that. I don’t feel like the clips I have of the first couple uploads are good enough for an uncut upload but I’ll definitely try to do a few. I might even revisit the first few techniques I cover once I hammer out some of the details of filming these tutorials as well as I’d like.
yep
Yep
🔥
What a dud… JK 🤩
@@chroniccrafter420 I know right! I should probably give up…
very cool!
Thank you, I’m really proud of this piece.
Great job on the video, thanks! A couple things since you asked, your volume could be louder, it's too low in relation to the commercials so the commercials are much louder. Also, there's nothing wrong with posting the longer video along with the cut version! Lots of good info, keep up the good work!
Thanks for giving me that feedback and confirming my suspicions. I was trying to clean up the audio but after rewatching after the upload I noticed this myself. I will do better on that. I think the longer ones might be a thing with some future uploads for sure.
Hi. I really enjoyed your Video. I am your new Subscriber. I'm surprised youtube recommended your channel to me. They are not so nice to my channel. I just started my channel last month. to get my channel started I put 5 videos on it. But they are not going to stay. I am going to start making videos of restoring things. Good luck with your channel. I have subscribed because I always wanted to learn how to do that with Glass. Thank you.
Thanks for the sub! I'm happy to see RUclips is suggesting my content. If I can offer any advice and encouragement I would encourage you to provide some kind of value and be consistent. try to teach or answer questions. If you can be helpful people will follow.
growing up some of my favorite glass to buy was the silver fumed cause the way it changes colors, another banger of a video! nice man
Mine too! I’ve still got my first colour changing Sherlock. But I had no idea way back then that silver was why it changed colours as it got darker.
@@zacstronautglass yep! color changing chillum and bubbler were my first haha. have a blessed day man
Very nice!
Thank you
How do you make your mushrooms like that?
I kinda build them from the bottom up. I might do a video about them soon. Lots of ideas in the works.
I like your videos. I have been self teaching myself glass blowing. People in the Denver area are real assholes about teaching or even letting you watch them. Keep making videos please
I plan on keeping them coming. I’m self taught and hope to use the channel to connect with other glass blowers as well since I don’t have access to any community of glass blowers locally.
Very cool! I never thought of doing wigwags in that way. Now I’m thinking what could be done if you stacked several sections together and wigwag them off axis 🤔 🤩
@@MantisRay861 that’s been on my mind too. Thanks for watching glad I could make you think of something in a different way.
Absolutely love the video! New to glass blowing and gonna try to do this with the colors I have! Keep up the great work!
Awesome! Thank you! Good luck it’s a fun technique to learn.
love the work brotha! is the gtt lynx a good starting torch? it would be my first. you explained everything super well man! thanks for sharing.
I’m sure a lynx would be a good starter torch but I’ve never personally used one and I know if GTT torches are ran with too small of a flame the face of the torch can overheat. This can ruin the torch. I’ve only ever used Bethlehem torches so I don’t have the best advice about running a gtt.
@@zacstronautglass okay that makes sense, right on man thank you a bunch!
Such an awesome color these look great
@@michaelkmiec5842 yeah it is, I’ve really had fun with electrum. Thanks
I’m a starter lamp worker and theee type of videos are what help me so much. Thanks 🙏
I know how it feels, I spent so much time watching different videos of how to blow glass. I hope I can help some people the way I was helped. You’re welcome!
Great video can't wait for the next. Just got my first set up in the mail the other day so excited. Very nice piece
@@DoraBisson Awesome, I still remember the excitement of getting my first torch! It’s an amazing craft. Looking forward to sharing more with you and everyone else.

Mornin man, Electrum is a blast. Is there a way to do this kind of wigwag on solid rod? This one where its divided & then reattached to get the final shape? I have done the basic "wigwag" on solid, but very little hollow work(dont have the vents for bubble trash).
Yes and no, it can be done but it will look very different from this pattern. Also since it’s on solid rod when you condense the piece into a disk the clear glass will start forming a thick lens. Work on that ventilation, there’s more than just bubble trash that can hurt you coming from the torch and glass.
Looks like he made a really long Ice Roller Pipe to me…
It’s only long because it has a blowtube which is used as a handle. The pattern at the end will be separated from that tube so it becomes a little disk with colours and patterns.
Nice thorough commentary. Clean work 👍🏼 thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! I hope I can provide some useful information here. 👍
A how to on these would be awesome! Love the shape
I probably should, I’ve got a few different projects in the works and in mind right now tho.
Loved both the commentary and the video! I'm glad RUclips recommended your video. I'd love to see more for sure. Thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge! Subscribed ✌
@@eggedor Thank you, really appreciate the follow. Looking forward to keeping this up! 🙌
I love the reflection of the piece in the flame
@@jeannegreen1639 I do too, it’s a reflection from the filter I have on the camera. I’m not sure what to do about it or if I can but it’s really interesting being able to see glass glowing outside of the flame.
@@zacstronautglass yes I noticed that too, was thinking it could be neat to have an actual mirror or more to see the piece from different angle at the same time!
@ I actually have a small mirror on the wall that I use to see things that I’m blowing into from a different angle. It helps blow things out evenly without having a blow host attached to the handle.
Nice! Enjoyed this one. Coming from an artist who's only done a handful of implosions, I thought you nailed when to speed up and when to slow down the video. I think someone brand new to flameworking would benefit from a full length real time tutorial though. Loving this channel!
@@bobbyjones4222 Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it.
Nice job man 👍
Thank you! Looking forward to keeping it up. Lots more to come. Hopefully keep up to a weekly upload at the least.
Been refreshing on the homepage-etsy-ig for this one jk, stay social! The BIGGEST part i find makes a good video is seeing where the heat hits the glass, i will let you know if i have more questions after travel down this road a little while. I dont know why this seams entirely different than the fume implosions ive been practicing, but its the same when melting in i suppose
I decided to finish the upload and get this up for you. I knew at least you were waiting so I went ahead got it out today instead of tomorrow like I planned. Thanks for the motivation!
nice stacking hours leveling up...
That’s right! Hours equals powers is one of the sayings I’ve heard repeated while learning to blow glass. Just got done filming in the shop for the next full upload.
@ yep thats what grime said when he sent me my torch or unknown origens…it has” Z” scratched in on every component. Ill have to ask torch talk
@ hell yeah! What torch? I love grimes work.
@@zacstronautglass I USE A REDMAX, HE DIDNT USE IT SO ITS A MYSTEY WHO was on that torch...i just bought it he just sold it lol
Nice work! Appreciate the tutorial and showing the finished pieces at the end. I dropped you a follow and look forward to watching your channel grow!
Awesome, thank you! Appreciate the follow. I’ll be doing my best to make the tutorials as clear and complete as possible.
Kinda need part two still
Where heat goes, and if you’re tearing off the back
@@auston911 this was an older Timelapse I filmed. I’ll be working on a more complete video of how I do this and posting sometime this week. Probably it should be up by Wednesday if not earlier.
@@auston911 when separating the piece from the tube I heat a narrow line at the edge of the pattern and blow a little to thin the glass. I’ll often do this a couple times to really pull some excess glass away from the edge so I have less glass to swipe away.
@@zacstronautglass sweet it gets me started on some non fume tech. i been lockd into fume mode leveling up
@ fume is a great way to get started. Lots of fundamentals you can learn without spending too much on colour. Thanks for leaving me some feedback I’ll definitely be trying to answer your questions in my next full upload.
Yahhh
Once you got all those dots laid, are you heating from one end to the other or blasting the whole thing all at once I’ve got implosions down a little bit so I figure you’re only working one end
@@auston911 I try to heat all the dots evenly. So a larger flame. Then repeated puffing out and recondensing until it all becomes a disk. Sometimes they don’t blow out evenly and I’ll try to work the dots that didn’t melt in until they look more even to the rest then back to even heat across the whole piecez
@ nice. Do you usually always keep the bottom of the blank the bottom I’m finding it tricky to flip it inside out once I get the desk sometimes it looks nicer on the inside. I realize where my implosion might be hidden inside out.
@auston911 I do often add a handle to the center of the dot pattern and flame cut the tube away then add a handle to the opposite side so I can condense the backside of the pattern. That way you can pick away the small point where all the dots condense too for that termination you see on the back.
Beautiful 😍
@@chroniccrafter420 thanks!
Dope work brother, looks incredibly clean!
Thank you! Cheers! I aim for clean work, excited to refine the tutorials and make them a little more watchable.
@@zacstronautglassnice this one good but a little confusing with the multi edit
