I’m sorry to hear you were laid off, Amy :’( I can’t imagine how anxiety inducing that must have been and especially after moving so recently. As a subscriber since 2020, I can tell you are so reflective and resourceful and whichever path you choose to pursue next you will absolutely thrive! Also, thank you both for being vulnerable and sharing your journeys with us as always! I first found your channel in 2020 as an incoming transfer to UCLA and now I am one year post-grad feeling totally lost/paralyzed by what to do next. Your vulnerability and wisdom has helped me feel less alone multiple times while navigating life the past few years! Just know there is someone out there navigating starting over with you and rooting for you both!!

Hi everyone, Amy here! Just wanted to say thanks so much for all your comments - I read (and reread) every single one 🫶🏻 I was initially very hesitant about sharing this update online so I really appreciate the positivity and encouragement from everyone here 🥺 Especially for those who’ve shared your own stories with me - when Jenny and I started this channel, we wanted to create content that would help others feel less alone in their process so TYSM for helping me experience that instead ❤️ Stay tuned for more episodes as we continue this journey of starting over together!

I've been laid off since the start of August. The market is crap globally, not just the US and what I find is that employers want a 110% match on a job before you even get a chance to interview hence I've only had 2 interviews for 2 different roles. It felt raw to me when I heard it and also felt the same feelings of "did I choose the wrong path?" questioning myself "why am I not marketable in the market?" ... and some days yes are hard, some days you're heads down knuckling down at applications and hussling the networks. It's absolutely shxt to put it politely and I'm well into my 40's where I should be making my money and setting myself up for retirement. It's a journey and I know in a year's time, we'll reflect on this time and laugh it off but when you're in the thick of it, it hurts.

Wow such a bold video! What I got to learn fortunately very early is to not define myself by the work or income I am making. Instead I see my existence itself as very valuable. I got to meet some people who had never really worked in their lives and were the most happy and satisfied people I knew. And it's not they are lazy, they do a lot of stuff, they are just not payed for it and have accepted, that the payment you get does not necessarily correlate with the usefulness of what you're doing. All the best for your journeys they have been incredible to watch 🤍

Happened the same to me. One day on Monday, I received an call invite. Surprise surprise, I am the only one in the team that got laid off. I only had 3 days to decide if I want to take the severance or apply internally for other departments. I decide to leave & this was 4 months ago... life has been uncertain, full of surprise. I'm still discovering what I wanted to do next, just being open. Although I'm currently full of emotions from the layoff. Rooting for you and everyone here!

Happened to me this year. I made a simple schedule. Stuck to it. Gave myself grace periods for more grieving, sleeping, weeping, saying yes to coffee’s, saying no to coffee’s. now I’m in designing a portfolio career mode trying to hold the space in this gap year to listen for what I really want and not just jumping back into corporate full time. Samir from Colin & Samir said - The minute you embrace the unknown with your time, the minute you become a creator. Enjoy this

Build your own mini-Google. Find way to compete in a dynamic / vertical SaaS that corp wont be able to focus on. Lets get on that startup arc (or take time to heal, breathe, reset, etc.). Laid off since Jan and told myself this is probably the only time in my life i can go on this startup arc - esp when leaders may not be able to truly support your career growth (bad leaders will feel insecure about your potential to speed past them - had one leader get promoted while i take the hit...). And im young and this is when we have the MOST energy. Thanks for listening to my James Talk.

I'm speaking from personal experience as a solo "founder". Having conviction is good and all, but the market/clients doesn't care about what you think. I spent 2 years on research and development for my first service. I was convinced it was going to work when I have the MVP. The uptake was not good. After 2 years of lackluster interest and performance, I pivoted to another service which I thought up of in 2 weeks. This time there is actual interest and uptake of my service. 4 years of my time wasted. Btw through all this, i worked part time minimum wage lifeguarding/receptionist, all these brain dead jobs so that I have time at work to think about the minor details how to make my service better, and to pay the bills. (My resume is screwed because of my choice). What I'm trying to say is: push out a MVP, then see if people are interested. Don't get too attached to any idea cus you might need to pivot. You can't manifest the world to like and pay for your product just because you spent alot of time and effort on it.

I would have assumed as early employee at Notion, an executive and 4 years that one would have been set to retire financially after selling stock on secondary market. One setback or closed door another one opens. There will always be opportunities. I have friends whether at a government job or big tech also running their side business some of which already profits 7 figures a year and most at low to mid 6 figures so doing both big corporate or government and running their own thing.

Currently in uni and was struggling between which startup to work for and overthinking the whole process without even applying to a single one yet, I really loved your advice on how you said to treat your 20s like an experiment and like failures really don't exist because you are just trying stuff out. I noticed that when I was younger I was naturally inclined to the things I was curious about, but now with all this stress of being an adult, I noticed it slowly vanish.
