E X C A V A T I O N will be a short, high-production-quality, single-player-only total conversion game built on the classic GoldSrc engine. Set in the distant future, the story unfolds at a small, privately-owned complex on Mars, where a team of 8 scientists is excavating an extraterrestrial object - a multi-biosphere annihilator.
You'll play as an operative in a four-member Martian Tactical Unit (MTU)-a SWAT-like team-sent to the complex to investigate a potential hostage situation. Expect no zombies or supernatural elements.

I have over 10 years of experience in hard-surface design and more than 5 years in pixelated graphics. So, take it easy on yourself, it takes time, a lot of milage.

why not make this in a less primitive engine? no offense i admire your work so far
Thx. Few reasons: existing knowledge of GoldSrc, strong nostalgic appeal of it, curiosity about how far we can push the engine visually, and it's easier to form a team, since the HL1 modding community is still quite active. Using a modern game engine would've likely made it far less appealing, forming a team much harder and development more expensive. Even as things are, it will probably never be finished or would take years, but whatever, it's very enjoyable and fulfilling to work on it.
This feels like a mix between portal 2, event[0], and ultrakill
To me our project visually looks quite similar to Moons of Madness, which also takes place on Mars. Quite a few similarities.

Hey do you only use a color texture for everything? or do you sometimes include a normal or roughness. I love your textures. so much. amazing design.
Thx. GoldSrc is an old engine and so doesn't support normal maps and else. These are all lightly baked textures (just simple edge highlights and such).

Looks phenomenal!! Maybe the bot enemies could have some splashes of orange or yellow somewhere? It could add a bit more visual depth to them, and could even be used to highlight weak point on the joints/limbs as you mentioned
Thx. Yeah, we'll try amber yellow on joints, or the same yellow of those mags attached to it. All in all, we'll try various things and see what works best.

@@happyfungoodhappy 🙂We'll see, money/budget dictates progress and the budget (which I as project stater provide) in general is small so progress is slow and project completion far away and not that likely. In any case, it's enjoyable to work on it and if we make it to the end, cool, if not, it was an enjoyable attempt.

It's not that type of game, though I can see how it might seem like it on the surface. There's actually nothing to extract or escape from. The mission is to reach an alien device (multi-biosphere anihilator) buried beneath the complex and destroy it using a handheld device that would be given to you by an alien being from a species that opposes the one that built the larger device. So, it's about infiltrating the complex and completing the objective rather than surviving or extracting.

Finaly someone did some kind of ammo storage on atropomorphic drones. I'm so done with futuristic soldiers not having any pouches for ammunition, so this is just a breath of fresh air. By the way, magnetic mag holder for droids is a long time fantasy of mine, good job

you should probably make art-book/sountrack pakcage to sell on steam (im guessing thats where youre going to post mod?) also i love seeing development videos, and i was wondering if you could do quick process of your modeling, because i saw you using blender and sketch-up, whats the reason for using 2 seperate ones and not jst one? Good job on this mode, better than AAA stuff weve got recently
Yeah, Steam is the ultimate destination and offering an art/dev book and such is a nice idea, we'll see. As others have asked about the whole bot creation process, we'll see to show it in one of the future update videos (if not earlier in a quick one). In short, modeling and texturing is done in SketchUp Make, while rigging and animation are handled in Blender. Blender also has the Source Tools plugin, which allows export of models and animations in the SMD format, compatible with GoldSrc's model compilation tools like Studiomdl. Could the joints be covered in red or bright green wires? That way the stick out and act as an easy targeting queue
Yeah, we can color these, either fully or partially (your example or something like it, highlighting a smaller piece that catches attention), in some vivid color. We'll figure something out, try different things, see what works best and doesn't screw the overall look of the bot.

For this project to have that authentic look of an retro game, the textures need to go through some kind of "indexed color" filter, to limit the color count. Several games up until the PS2 era used this type of texture and I feel like this is the only thing missing for the graphics of this game to be truly authentic. Other than that, the project is so incredible, so beautiful... I'm more hyped for this game than GTA 6.
Thx, glad you dig the project. We use GoldSrc, the 26 years old engine powering HL1, so textures are indeed indexed, must be, both for world/brushwork and models. So it's all authentic, within limitations of that time, or GoldSrc at least.

Why does the robot have an optic on the weapon?
The idea here is that the bot is directly connected to it (or a part of bot's vision), allowing it to use the scope without needing to physically align its head with it (rear lens isn' there). This means the bot can maintain precision and fire accurately from various poses, as long as the weapon is securely held.

Thx. Quite a few reasons. First and foremost is familiarity or extensive experience with the engine prior to the project's birth. GoldSrc has a nostalgic charm and offers a nice challenge because you're working with older tech and thus many limitations. When you put an effort and create someting quite impressive within these constraints, it's thrilling and very satisfying, and really catches people's attention. Then there's the contributing to the legacy of a game engine that shaped FPS history. It's simply more rewarding and far more interesting for everyone on and around the project when the attempt is to deliver 'AAA' design quality game on a 26 years old engine.

interesting progress on this project! although I find it odd that the weapons eject current-day ammo casings while reloading heavily atypical sci-fi looking mags (they could be using caseless ammo instead?). also the recoil animations look too smooth, making them snappier would make them feel more grounded and powerful imo (same for the charging handle on the assault/ sniper rifle) anyway, keep up the good work:)
Thx. All casings are from HL, we have our own models but didn't get to code them. I hear you about the recoils and else. In general, don't take anything as finished or final, even the aim punch fixes shown in the video aren't good enough, just a bit better. The wepons are functional enough, for now and we can focus our attention on the combat play. There's a lot of smaller and bigger fixes to do later on the weapons.
26 years later and fresh GoldSrc kino is still on the menu.
Guys just PLEEEEASE make sure to do proper playtesting to make sure game is valve tier quality
Not sure we can achieve 'Valve-tier quality' given the nature of the project, the team, and its small budget, but rest assured it would be tested extensively and be as good as it can be given the circumstances.

if you lose limbs, will you be able to harvest them from dead bots to replenish yourself?
You won't be playing as this robot, but MTU (Martian Tactical Unit) operative, a human. Bots won't be replenishing lost limbs.
Just learned about this game through this video... my jaw literally dropped when I saw the style of this game. The way the PDA looked as well as how the bots have different reloads depending on their missing limbs.... phenomenal.

It seems to me that many aren't asking the most important question. Why was the project halted? And while on the topic, how likely are you guys to resume working on it? (Since as this video suggested, it seems far from a guarantee).
In essence, the budget was depleted (some members are involved on a paid basis). The continuation may or may not happen, only time will tell. We're not some indie team with a sufficient budget and a set goal to sell the game. We're just a bunch of skilled guys, some payed (some more some less) some doing work free of charge, doing work on this in spare time. As the project starter I'm providing the budget and I'm not able to replenish it atm to the degree needed to complete the combat play, our next major milestone (which btw makes or breaks the game). Given the game would be free (as selling it on Steam may not be feasible because reasons), I'm not that willing anymore nor in position really to spend larger sums of money on it. The hope at the beginning was, if I start doing quality stuff in this outdated engine, start a mod, enough skilled people from the HL modding community would be intrigued enough to jump on board for free, and together, with our combined skills we make someting cool and impressive on this old engine, leave a mark if you will. It did happen, but not entirely so, meaning money had to be spent. So, we'll continue when there's enough money to reach that next milestone and the right people are ready for it. Minor work may be done in the meantime. Whatever happens, I, as I hope others, am very proud of what has been achieved so far.
