Why I Ditched the Nissan L24 Engine for a 2JZ
Просмотров 360Год назад
James walks through why he decided to swap out the original L24 2.4-liter Nissan engine from his 1972 Datsun 240Z and replace it with the iconic Toyota 2JZ powerplant. James originally planned to build a 3.0-liter stroker engine for the L-Series. Combining a 2.8 engine block, a high-compression 2.4 head, custom pistons, and a crankshaft from a rare diesel version of the 2.8-liter. Building that...

Nice restoration. It does not have the Brian Angliss front nose. It looks like a the 427 version. Was the front clip replaced or did it come from the factory as we see it?
If the owner reads this, please tell me you will get them to do something about those square (jack point?) holes below the front wing grills, they look really shite.
The car isn't finished in this video. There are sill trims to go on which hide these!
Impressive. Classic Interceptor with a modern twist.
Great craftsmanship no doubt but you’ve butchered a classic !!
Great work. Would love the same in my 260z.
I do really like the improvements on the exterior but one thing l hate is electronic parking btakes if there is a clinch in the electronics you are stuck in a cable operated hand brake even if the cable breaks at least you will not get stuck
great job. would love the know the source for the headlights! Thanks
Is there any videos of this car?
Two of my favorite vices, Chrysler big blocks and the Jensen.😊
Very impressive build I pick out the electrics and switches wonderful detail.
Wow really nice work on the Interceptor, subtle mods in all the right places. what are the wheels 17x? I am working on my 71 and looking to fit as much rubber front and rear as I can. MoTeC touch is brilliant.
17x7.5F and 17x8.5 Rears
Hi my name is Mark...how does a person get in touch with you...I have a telephone number..email.. wassup.. that's it... And 3 Potential projects...and if you can't do them...can you recommend anyone sir??.. Cheers
What is the copper spray paint you throw down before the weld? Is it copper head gasket sealer? You can weld directly on it?
metafluxuk.co.uk/online-store/ols/products/metaflux-70-49-weld-copper-spray It's conductive primer for welding!
Need to see more of the Cribblet breaking stuff! 🤣
What a pair of bell ends. James is the worst
Haha, brilliant episode! That looks like epic fun!
I built a roll cage similar to your design 35 years ago. It failed tech inspection. The support bar for the hoop has to attach to the hoop near your head, and attach to the hoop on the opposite side near the base, not the rear shock mount. The brace stays within the plane of the main hoop. I cut out the non-conforming brace, and made a new brace. That passed tech. Our design diverged in the floor mount area. I had an L plate the came down the inner rocker area, and on to the floor. The end of the roll bar sat on the floor, and was welded to the floor and up the side plate. Your roll bar sits farther back, which is good for seat travel. The main hoop support change I referenced in the first paragraph will also be farther back, giving more room in the passenger compartment. We didn't have to remove the cage to do the finish welding after tacking. We had holes in the floor that the tubes passed through to drop down to the ground. Once welding was complete, we slid the four L brackets over the holes after raising up the cage to its final position. You might consider putting a reinforcing panel or tube within the rocker panel to tie the back hoop to the strut bars that support the front shock mount. This is easier done if you have to replace the rockers due to rust. You can still add a door bar higher up. Take a look at the Bob Sharp Racing 240Z cars from the 70's. These were SCCA GT2 class cars, and the cages were a work of art. Really a pain in the ass to get in and out of, but safe. They used those front strut bar supports you plan on adding to your chassis. Bob Waar's book about Datsun race car prep shows exactly what I'm talking about. Look at pages 133-135. Sharp's team used three bars to support the front shock mounts. One bar is in the wheel well, and passes through the inner fender well to tie the front of the rocker to the rear of the front shock mount. Cheers! I love the idea of a modern twin cam six in the Z. Oh, one final thought. All-in weight was 2238 pounds for the early Z.
I was hoping to hear the engine running but it's something to look forward to. Will be subbed, leave a thumbs up, and a tap on the bell. Thanks for sharing with all of us. Greetings from Flint, Michigan, USA!
Looking cool from the eyes of a former Interceptor SP owner, but I really don't like the black wheels. Otherwise, looks great.
1:29 omg is that a supra
Enjoying the progress videos on this car. Great fabrication work. Spotted the Supra scuttle panel on the bending machine 😊
Gonna go out there and say clecos have been superceded by tec screws
This is very similar to what I am doing with my Aston Martin DBS: ruclips.net/video/U1z9qs41HU0/видео.html. The wheels look identical to a standard wheel by 'Image Wheels'; the 'Billet 81', but Image also make a Jensen inspired wheel, the 'Intercepter Billet'. Was that considered? You might kick yourself for not thinking of it, but for my four headlamp setup I have one pair (outer) set for driving on the left in the UK and the inner pair set for driving on the right on the continent switched by a hidden switch in the arm rest. I shall be asking my electrician why we don't have MoTec PDM. We seem to have gone for the 'Sh!t load of wiring. All excellent work.
Image were approached first and could not build the wheels we needed to our specifications.
It looks like an Avanti with a glandular disorder
Nice. I added Edelbrock proflow port injection in 2007 to my 440 Jensen convertible and was an early customer of HiSpec's 6 pot calipers. 320/330mm disks I think ? The 17in rims made in the traditional Mk3 style suit it better IMHO. Interested by the lowered front valance. I have never got around to fitting the fiberglass spoiler that Jensen developed in one of their reincarnations. Looks like a high quality job, congrats.
Front end looks weak like it’s lost it’s face charater and muscle. Change the wheels. Terrible. Like the air cleaner but not in that rounded oval. Doesn’t sit with the car at all. A cobra is all curves. Jensen isn’t.
Love Jensons, not a fan of all the black accents/wheels Baby blue with chrome much nicer!
No
Toyota supra i's tottototot pepepe toooooooooooaaaaaarrrraaaapaaaaaaapaaaaaaaaapaaaaaaapaaaaaaaaaaaammmmammmmmmmiiimmmm
Great craftsmanship. I want one like this for my B13!
good video nice to see British men building a car well done look forward to your another videos
How cool. A proper muscle car is not something we foreigners associate with the UK. 😀
I was like where are they going with the coffee...
might be a stock car, doesn't it?
Looking forward to seeing the finished article on this! Top craftsmanship so far. Great work!
Great video James. Cage is looking good 👍
Do you sell the mounts? What price?
I can make you a set to your own requirements. Email - info@retroroadsports.co.uk
the idea of a modern interceptor is the stuff of dreams, maybe if I win the lottery
Thought those were always great looking cars. Were...because congratulations:you managed to be the first one to make it look as bad as that Eleanor Mustang, from that crappy Gone in 60 sec.s remake. But hey,i am an old guy. What do i know?🙄
Happy to build you one to your own preferred specifications :)
I certainly hope you plan on putting the hood back on.
In my opinion better the original Jensen Interceptor, what class, Jensen Interceptor is the The Jensen Interceptor and is untouchable
EFI 383. Bloody Legendary. Absolutely sick of seeing feature of morons that LS swap a Jensen. The ONLY modern motor that is acceptable for these cars, is a HellCrate, or the Demon Spec motor. Unfortunately, deleting the side-light means the car is much more likely to be involved in a Fail To Give Way incident, for someone off to the side who never sees the indicator until it's too late in a roundabout. There are many modern cars where the indicator in the headlights is not visible at all past around 15degrees off axis. When changing the lights like this, it is ESSENTIAL to add side-repeaters in the door mirrors, doing so in the grills is a GREAT idea. Can the daytime running lights be deactivated for owners who don't want to drive around blinding people in clear sunny days?
Thanks for the comments. The DRLs will have their own switch to deactivate if required :) The side vents have about 48 Bright Orange LEDs tucked away inside them for the very reasons you describe :) With the DRL flashing Orange and the side vent repeaters, you won't miss it!
Love an Interceptor and the craftsmanship is outstanding. Well done.
is the boot the same volume size as the original ?
Pretty much. No modifications to the floor etc. A small reduction due to panelling behind the rear sear but it's negligible.
Damn thats clean as hell great work! I have a MK4 Supra sitting on my drive waiting for a few bits of work done to put her back onto the road, can't wait to start enjoying her in the new year!
awesome, that's a next level machine.
Nice build. Are you keeping the original analogue instraments? Part of the Jensen flavour for me is the way the rev indicator bounces around.
It's got a full suite of custom Gauges in the Dash :)
I’m sure he enjoyed his 5ltr V8 while waiting for it! Still not a Jaguar Darren!
It is a great feeling to know that you have totally dismantled and put a vehicle back together again, knowing every single thing about that vehicle gives you great confidence about it....
I have n Onda boi buddy trying to convince me to Frankenstein mine.
Very interesting project - thanks for sharing. Given that originality is clearly not a focus for the owner, I'm surprised he hasn't elected to go for an LS3 engine swap and 6-speed box - better performance, lighter, spares more easy to come by, much improved fuel efficiency.
@steveberry a modern hemi mopar would be good too , drivetrain from a challenger hellcat maybe
Yes, that would work too.
It might get a modern 8 speed gearbox yet, we're going to see how it drives on the original. These mopar units are great, reliable engines, MPG not really a concern when owning a Jensen but the EFI setup should improve it over the original carb.
