How to write love interests who aren't one-dimensional
Просмотров 10212 часов назад
If you're writing a fantasy romance - or maybe just a fantasy with some romance - then at some point you're probably going to wonder if your love interest is compelling enough. Readers typically bemoan one-dimensional love interests who don't really have their own character arcs. When they're just props in the story or merely an extension of the main character instead of their own character. So...
How to make your fantasy map feel true-to-life
Просмотров 59День назад
Most fantasy stories benefit from a great map. But is it really ok to draw upon real-world geography as inspiration? Well, yeah! There are certainly some do's and don'ts when it comes to mirroring real locations, but it usually comes down to when and how you start thinking about your setting as a living, breathing, world. Not just an abstract idea. So today on Fantasy Writing for Barbarians, I ...

Your inciting incident is going to be one of the most crucial moments in your entire story. No pressure, of course. Plus they're struggling with the motivations of a key (albeit minor) character. As usual, I give some...

Thanks for your point of view Jon, it was a pleasure to listen to. OP’s post resonated with me as well. The pull between yearning to put to paper the ideas living inside me, and some unnameable dread caused by trying to actually do the thing. I hope their passion guides them through this uncertain time 🫶
“It can be really fun to just create your own world… But if your passion is writing, you have to come to grips with some of the limitations of what a novel has to do in order to function” Oof, touché
is that a Sponsor at the beginning of the episode?! Thats amazing! congrats! Thank you so much for this episode. This was wonderful. I've decided to shelve my current work and pick up a previously shelved project. I am very excited to dive in and bang this story out. I'm hitting the ground running.
Very happy to hear that you're working on your story again! If you have any other questions or discussion topics along the way, don't hesitate to send them our way!
Not great advice tbh. Idk how anyone could picture themselves in a world like Garland’s Annihilation or Interstellar but the idea is to go deeper instead of wider. The OP’s fantasy world sounds dope and I have questions about the seasons, crops, hibernation of species, other celestial bodies, the makeup of gases in the atmosphere, this tree of life, etc. (so deeper) as opposed to wider (new races coming up from underground, inter dimensional/extra terrestrial invasion, magical items/weapons, colonization of this new outer space bc of the degradation of the old world, etc.) all of which would be overwhelming for the reader especially in a one off and not in a series, but even a series needs to parallel/call back to Act I.
100% disagree about the deathnote conflict being 'additive' It's essentially what made the story good. While theme may be the backbone of the story with characters as the heart, conflict is the meat. Without good conflict, there is no story, only preaching.
❤❤❤
I wanted to write For, forever but never could Bring myself to do it, i think im scared. Anyway i would want to do it For me and still be good. i could never be brave enough to even try to publish.
How does this have so few views?
I'm glad this came up in my recommended
I could listen to these for 2 hours easy. Keep up the great work, very informative and interesting to listen to! Ive got a question, maybe a discussion topic. How do you write and avoid pulling in elements from other media you've watched or read? Ive been paralyzed in my writing for a long while. I'll be working on a scene and I'll have a moment where I suddenly see something that reminds me of some other media. As soon as that happens the scene is dead and a voice in my head tells me I'm a plagiarizing fraud. I want to write the story that's in my head, but that inner critic is very loud lately and I'm finding it difficult to push through.
It can be hard to get past that voice in your head, but part of getting past that is understanding that all work is derivative even if unintentionally. The most "original" works just pull from many places and experiences. The hunger games is reminiscent of battle royale and many dystopias with evil dictatorships, but has a unique story to tell. Part of the reason it feels more original is that the author also pulled from her own experiences with politics and the Iraq war. Also, while something might remind you of something else, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will be as obvious to someone else reading it. If it would make you feel better, have someone who isn't a writer read over what you've written and ask them if its *too* similar to anything they've seen before *after* they've read it. I've found that writers can get too caught up in tropes, patterns, arc, and things that have "been done before". The second I stopped worrying about being derivative and just focused on themes, characters, incorporating my experiences, and worldbuilding, the more "original" my work became.
Great question! Tabling this for a future episode
PAPACY is pronounced PAY-PASSEE.
Ahhhh. Pronunciations are often my downfall.
Fantastic episode! Loved it. I gotta know though, is the name of the podcast a reference to Dead Poets Society? A barbaric YAWP :D
sadly no
Good look at this episode. I would say throughout the series the reason don is able to keep his emotions in check at work is the affairs that he has throughout the series where he is able to tell who he is with at the time about deep aspects of his life. Allowing him to go into work unchanged. But that’s how I see it.
For me as a pantser it always comes down to what I am trying to say. Which is in the end what a story is. If you don't have something to say, you don't have a story. It's not about conflict even, as conflict is often better off as a additive to a story rather than being the catalyst. (Example, Die Hard without the terrorists is not a story. But Death note without the battle of wits between light and L is still a great premise that has a story, a message and ample opportunities for conflict being baked in later.) There is no end all be all answer but I think the crux of writing a story comes down to what the writer is trying to say. The message behind the themes.
I think for me, knowing the reason why I'm writing is 90% of what determines whether I get a project done. Most of the time my reason is just getting the nightmares out, which has worked well Not trying to write novels has also worked well too
>likes the most annoying and boring character in the show dropped
The entirety and of this scene is literally one of the most perfect things to exist
And yes, he reads magazines 😏
Jerry is actually the best actor in this show
😂😂😂
Jerry was about to go super saiyan.
The "Bye Jonah" at the end is so good hahahah
He put on the crabby sweater🤣🤣🤣
sandra and jerry are meant for each other 😭
I love that he took the time to put on the crab sweater before trying to intimidate Jonah
He wanted to make sure Jonah knew he was crabby.
Funny how I just watched this episode
LOL
LMAO😂😂😂😂
How does the actor that plays Sandra do her lines without laughing 😂😂
Good question...all the bloopers from all the seasons seem to be everyone else but her
Fun fact: the guy Sandra was “flirting” with is Lauren Ash’s (Dina) boyfriend...cute😊
No wayy ....... She got her real life bf to act in this
These two are a good looking couple that’s for sure!
aw nice
He's wearing the crab sweater!!
I'm re-watching their wedding episode and came here just to see if he was. Lol
I. Will. Hate. It.
