Mowing grass at Tophill Low (with some thoughts!)
Просмотров 28521 день назад
This was originally part three of a three part series, but I wasn't happy with the first two bits, so I got rid of them. Just to explain why I might be making reference back to things that didn't happen :) Working on some of the less varied grass areas at the nature reserve to try and improve them for future years. Recorded July 2024. Mowing with a Falci "dragon" 80 blade, on a home-made snath.
My attempt at 5m x 5m competition mowing 2024
Просмотров 6212 месяца назад
My competition attempt at the 2024 Northern Scythe Festival. Not very high placing in the overall competition, but a new personal best for me, so I'm happy with that. I made a major tactical blunder by trying to go all round the edge, instead of going back and restarting from the beginning. The grass was lying the wrong direction on the far side so it was hard to cut low. I corrected the mistak...

Filmed July 2024 Went for just 1 shorter video of the overall event this year. Great weather with mostly nice light grass to mow, and, as every year, a great opportunity to learn and be challenged to improve :) Day 1: - Mowing all day Day 2: - Mowing in the morning - 10m x 10m plots around midday (sorry no video of this!) - 5m x 5m plots in the afternoon (only a couple of videos) - Team competi...
Hazel Coppice Mowing May 2024
Просмотров 2424 месяца назад
Clearing weeds (mostly nettles, brambles, and thistles) from a hazel coppice. This coppice was cut last year, so the hope is that by doing this cut now it will allow the new hazel growth to do well and not get overcrowded by other plants. Some other trees were also planted with tree guards, so I cleared around them. Styria 65 blade on a home-made handle. I made the pole for this handle from a p...

2023 Tophill Low Scythe Montage
Boltby Reservoir November 2023
Просмотров 6710 месяцев назад
Mowing a very late cut as part of conservation at Boltby reservoir. Bit of a challenge mowing on these slopes. Not the neatest cut but good enough for this job. I've been trying a different sharpening method based on some videos I saw of European mowers. The advantage I can see for my context is that the scythe end doesn't get buried in the mud every time I sharpen. The ground here was very wet...
My last meadow mow of the year - September 2023
Просмотров 307Год назад
The end of meadow management season at Tophill Low. A nice open patch of meadow on a relatively soft and wet area of land. Fairly dense and heavy growth, but fortunately lush and soft, so it cut nicely. Falci dragon 80 long ditch blade on a home-made Swedish inspired snath. Could probably have done a faster job with a longer blade, but I wasn't sure how rough the ground might be.
Garden 'wild patch' maintenance cut September 2023
Просмотров 232Год назад
The second and final cut of the year for this garden area. I occasionally use the scythe to check the area for wildlife before mowing it. Hedgehogs sometimes sleep in long grass like this, and other animals can be present, so best to make sure there's nothing there beforehand. Styria 65 blade on a lightweight home-made snath.
Bempton Mow September 2023

The third annual "wildflower strip" mow with scythes at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, September 2023. A very variable sward (i.e. the mix of grasses etc.). Tough and tangled rank grass for most of it, with odd patches of softer and lusher material where the wildflowers have started to take more. Hence the variable progress in different locations. A big thank you to all who joined me to help! I was using...
Clearing a Dyke with Scythe and Maig
Просмотров 147Год назад
First attempt making and using a maig, so mistakes definitely made, but lots to learn from. Still very happy with the results though - it made short work of the job compared to our previous attempts clearing this dyke with hand tools, and we didn't have to climb in the (rather smelly) water! I think a maig is enough of a scythe to be allowed on "scythe mowing only"! Filmed August 2023. More abo...
Garden 'wild patch' maintenance cut June 2023
Просмотров 651Год назад
Mowing a small 'wild patch' in a Yorkshire garden. This area of the garden is allowed to grow long, but still has a maintenance cut two or three times a year. It seems to be popular with hedgehogs, so I'm careful to make sure there's nothing sleeping anywhere I'm about to mow, especially in the hedge. Home made single grip handle with a Styria 65 ditch blade.
a morning of mowing
Просмотров 69Год назад
Simply a morning's worth of scythe mowing at Tophill Low. Mowing the weeds and grass under and around some trees where machinery access is difficult. No commentary or sound effects - just mowing and background noise. I tried to keep the cuts/edits to a minimum but there are some. Of course, there are many who could do a better and faster job than this, but this was a comfortable pace for me. Fa...
Mowin' in the Rain
Просмотров 65Год назад
Alternative title: "Think I'm finally getting the hang of it" I first picked up a scythe in 2018 and I wasn't a quick learner, but after years of trying I'm finally getting results which I'm pretty happy with. Also, since I'm often asked, scythes have absolutely no problem mowing in the wet and rain (I believe some even claim it makes things easier - possibly true but I couldn't say either way ...

    Always interesting. But it seems to me that you never encounter such ideal conditions in real life. It is a bit like cycling on a velodrome vs. riding your bike in the city traffic... On the most tricky plots, you cannot even give 2 same strokes in a row, let alone go full throttle.

    • @scythemowingonly
      @scythemowingonly 2 месяца назад

      I agree completely, most mowing is much harder than this. But, as with many other skills, I would say there is value in these opportunities in idealised conditions for learning and developing technique. This can then be adapted to the more difficult practical situations.

      The more we use scythes in real life situations the more “ideal” meadow grass we will have.

    Hi, not everbody is able th wield a 95cm blade... congrats ! You say that you weren't a quick learner. I would be glad to know the key aspects that were the milestones in your learning process.

    • @scythemowingonly
      @scythemowingonly 9 месяцев назад

      That's a tough question! I suppose the main areas of skill in my opinion would be sharpening, scythe setup, and technique, but also recognising that the requirements for each of these varies depending on the conditions. I have incrementally improved in these three areas through experience (I still have plenty to learn). It should also be recognised that some grass is very easy to mow, while some is very hard, so results can be highly variable for equally competent mowers. Two big milestones for me relatively recently were making my own snaths to suit my preferences, and obtaining a blade "peening" machine, enabling me to make my blades much sharper. There's more I could say but the full answer might be the length of an essay! 😄 (Edit: I should also note I have benefitted tremendously from the advice and guidance of others, at e.g. scythe competitions. I learned a lot from competitions even when I've done very badly in them)

    Nice job! spent most of the last half of the video with flashback taste and smells of the ditch water tho'... So: what did you learn about using the Maig? and what would you do/have done differently?

    • @scythemowingonly
      @scythemowingonly 9 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Fortunately I managed to avoid the taste of the water on this occasion! Regarding the maig, I suspect there's plenty which could be done to optimise the blade angles mounting on the handle. I found it much more effort than a scythe, but that could just be unfamiliarity. Still nicer than getting in the water with a scythe 😄

    What the best size blade for a sythe

    • @scythemowingonly
      @scythemowingonly Год назад

      It depends what you want to do with it. In this video I used a 65 cm (26") blade, which is a good all rounder. I wouldn't use anything shorter unless it's really rough. My longest blade for regular mowing is 95 cm (37").
