this is incredible! way to go!
I have a similar type of shell on my truck and this is the idea I needed. Thanks!
Is insulating the floor necessary? It doesn’t look like it was done in this build
Is there a way to integrate a power bank to the 12v system to power all the smaller things
This model is called, Smart Cap Visibility 85% Negative-Dark Shade 😝
That's allot words to remember!
Pretty cool. How does the third brake light hook up?
They supply a pigtail that ties into your driver side brake light.
@@dennisgehrke9549 Okay, thanks!
I have the Canyon AT4X with the AEV tire mounted in the bed. Do these caps clear the tire? Looks like there is room on the sides, was wondering about height?
Sorry, but not sorry. That cap looks like 💩
I disagree looks dope
@@ProblematicbehaviorYou definitely gotta be on dope if you disagree.😁
Gotta love RUclips and peoples need to have an opinion!
Id say it looks good as well. You might be the Minority on that. Good thing that theres a Cap for you that you’ll like. What is it that doesn’t look right for you?
@ It looks out of place, aka like 💩
I'll never understand why so many people want these. Slow, heavy, introduces many more failure points. Rotating the handle by hand really isn't that hard to do.
I felt the same way so I bought one. I have 13 different trailer between work and home and I've tried everything from manual to electric to screw gun run and currently use all manual. This one quit working pretty quick after I installed it. Makes sense for folks that struggle to do manual.
Awesome vid!! You were a shot of adrenaline in my camper planning. I'm 51, and planning on taking a year+ to travel the country and see every National park I can, and see a Baseball game in every MLB park. Time frame is about 5-6 years out, and will work a few days a week remotely no matter where I'm at. I went crazy and started 3D modeling my dream trailer. I eventually settled on 6.5x12 trailer size. Inside has a custom futon (I'll build it) and removable table so I can work or chill and eat watching a movie. Am I crazy to go that big? 5x8 and 6x10 just didn't feel right for my needs of living on the road for a year+. I'm also planning on getting a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy down the road so I'll need space for an 80lb doggie. I'm doing the rear outdoor galley with a Truma 69L dual zone, Nomad kitchen sink/stove pullout drawer and custom cabinets I'll build. I started with the Bend Oregon Tallboy trailer size and dropped the height to 5'. I'm 6' tall. Would I be going over board if I went 6'3" so I could stand up? I do want to be able to boondock, be able to go offroad but I don't plan on doing crazy bolder ridden trails. Appreciate any and all ideas and criticism. Also. Galley. I found these guys a couple weeks ago. Awesome pull out stove, sink and cutting board. I'm totally NOT gonna DIY this: www.nomadkitchenco.com/product-page/nomad-kitchen
Great video! I also have a 24 ZR2 and have been waiting for someone to make this exact video to help me make a decision on the Smartcap
It's a great truck cap!
Gave you a sub from Upstate New York. I have same truck and same cap
Nice! It's a great truck and setup!
Hello Sir, are you still overlanding in this rig? what did you do with the rear cab camera? isn't the truck cap in the way? I have the same truck and I am curious if its still working out off road. Thanks a lot ! great video
I actually traded it in on a Colorado. It does block the camera.
I put mine foil side out also. I experimented with both ways it did show lower temps with the heat gun with foil facing out. I did put a foil radiant barrier over studs to give an air space then 3/4” foam. Black trailer 5,000 Btu ac in Florida I stay in the mid 70s inside.
Yeah you guys have a whole different thing to deal with the heat and humidity. Snowmobile guys in Canada probably put it the other way!
I'm having trouble with my truck being too tall to get into the garage. I'm wondering if I lowered my truck then installed airbags to raise it up when driving, if that would work. Thoughts?
If it's too tall at stock height then it wouldn't help. Air bags only add to stock height. These go about 2" max
Great straight forward video. Did you happen to attach the rear stop light that RSi provided? I have a roll-n-lok but was considering upgrading to the RSi.
Yeah it has the light on it but mine didn't have the harness in the box when I opened it. They have since sent and I installed it, took about 5 minutes
Great vid and looking forward to seeing what ya do next. On the fence about this bed cap for my Gladiator. Do you plan to attach anything else, like an awning?
I will probably run a roof top tent at some point. Maybe an awning. I think I am going to put some shelves and what not inside first.
Thank you! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
Curious how the undercoating is holding up. I have a new snowmobile trailer I'm going to insulate and apply something to the flooring underside... just not sure what to use.
so far it's been great. I talked to my spray foam guy and he said that would do good as well. Then youd get some insulation under it for the winter!
Good job bud. These ZR2’s are beautiful
Thanks! 👍
How many foam insulation boards did you end up using? Just trying to get an idea of how many I should purchase so I don’t have to make 3 trips to Home Depot for insulation boards.
Each 4x8 sheet has 32 sq ft coverage. How many you use will depend on the size of _your trailer_...
Amazing video! I can’t wait to do this to my trailer. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! It's a fun project!
I haul firewood daily with my 1/2 tonne truck and have had bags on my last three trucks. I hate seeing a truck sagging and the bags take the sag out and the roll with extra weight.
Yeah I put them on all my trucks.
What made you go with a smaller truck?
I actually traded my 3/4 ton in on a Colorado and a 1 ton dually.
Are those 12v can led's bright enough? Considering on going with 12v lights or 110v. Thanks
They do pretty good. I'm happy with them.
New to the channel. First off thank you for sharing content. I have a couple questions about your trailer build. 1. What’s your thoughts on doing a leaf over the axles build? 2. What’s your thoughts on adding an outside bar to lock entry door vs a standard RV style latch? Great job…👊
Thanks. I dont know about the spring over. It would make the trailer even higher (this one is extra tall as is) and I would think it would effect it's road manners. I really like this one with the RV door so I can lock when I am sleeping inside and no one can lock me in it (it's happened)
Great information Thanks!
you bet
Good demonstration, thanks.
Glad it helped
Great video! I was taught that you want to put a 1/2 turn in the strap when going up the load on both sides. I was told that this reduces or eliminates "strap slap" or when the air rushing by causes the strap to vibrate and strike the load repeatedly. While it doesn't seem like a big deal, it can cause abrasions to the load (including tarps, any finish on the load, and to the strap itself). My company had an insurance claim against a carrier for allowing damage to equipment they were hauling coast to coast while the straps were merrily slapping away at freeway speeds.
I see allot of people do that. I like them flat but seems to be allot of different opinions
I can't stand that you can't open the tailgate because the jacks in the way, otherwise I'd use them too
yeah I hear ya. Mine hits on some trailers with regular jacks too!
Well I’m to late but man I would love to put in my trailer for showers while camping my wife would sure love it but love watching videos for more updates that I can consider to do to our trailer
Thanks for watching!
Do you have a link for step down transformer from amazon
I think this is it. amzn.to/3Za07hC
Did you bother to contact the manufacturer for their input?
No I'm not sure what they would have to offer. I've seen how they build these things - slap them together.
I always have trouble figuring out how to use those straps, despite owning several. Thanks for the explanation!
Happy to help!
So you installed insulation then ran the plywood strips over roof braces for a nailing piont
yes. Gives a nice space to run wires too.
@@buildlifeoverland thank you for the response. What did you use 1/4?
@@sxsoffroad43 The strips are 3/4 (better hold for nails and wont sag) the bead board is like 5/16" tongue and groove from Home Depot.
I bought an AT4X with the Edition 1 package that added the bull bar, light bar, come up winch, beadlock capable wheels, and the cargo rack for the back. I think it was the closest I could get to the AEV without having the spare block stuff. I really want 35s, but oh well...trade offs
Sounds like a pretty cool build!
Looks like piano quality to me. :-) Thanks for the video.
You bet!
I have a 24 Bison and since taking delivery added the winch and snorkel to the truck as well as the removable side steps. Have whatever truck you want, but Chevrolet really did a fantastic job on the new Colorado.
I agree!
Kinda late to the game but which removable steps do you have for your Bison ? I have a 24 as well and interested in getting some removable steps. I absolutely love my truck btw .
Thanks, I learned a few things about using ratchet straps I didn't know. A must watch for anyone who hasn't already been trained in the safe use of these straps.
Thanks, I hope it helps
It looks like you are doing great since your knee surgery. Congratulations. Thanks for this video. It was really informative and well done. I would like to get a regular ZR2 someday
Thanks, so far do good. Love my ZR2!
I bought a 24 ZR2 with all the upgrades. I'm happy with it so far and am planning on doing some intermediate level off-roading soon.
Good choice! I love mine!
I went with the Bison and love it, but I’m coming from a Jeep that was well built and I didn’t want to start from scratch again. Everything under warranty and ready for the rocks.
Theres allot to be said for that! modern vehicles are so well tuned from the factory. I have had several jeeps and one of my friends too. He has a hell cat and several really built jeeps. Recently he got one with all jeep upgrades installed from the factor and he said it is a world of difference. All the parts know each other!
In my opinion get a loaded out ZR2 with all the options you want. The Bison IS NOT worth the minor upgrade's vs the price increase for them.
That price is allot to swallow! Really depends on how you'll use it. I'm very happy with mine!
@@buildlifeoverland That is the truth. Most of us are just going to drive these things like "Pavement Princesses", LOL!!!
Here in Lost Angeles I need the Bison to intimidate the illegals in their beaters.
Cool video. I found it while searching for a video about installing TPO on cargo trailer roof. I was toying with the idea of installing 2" insulation on top of the exterior metal roof with screws/tabs and then installing TPO over the top of that. I like your approach as well.
Glad it was helpful!
What size is your trailer please thanks 😊
14' long plus the V noze. 7.5 wide and 7' tall, thanks for watching!
Thanks for a Good informative video series. Just got an 8.5 x 20 enclosed. Housing a rzr an atv / camper.
Very nice!
LOL I guess overland and overlanding sound cooler than driving rotfl. Jeeze.
We always called it car camping LOL!
Like you’re videos
Thanks!
Curious about a couple ideas, maybe someone can answer what they think would happen? 1) what about painting the inside of the exterior aluminum panels with Henry’s tropi-cool before installing the foam panel insulation? Would that help? Or the backside of the wood paneling going back up after the install ? Would this add any R-Factor? 2) or adding foil sheeting , using home food foil glued to the foam panels facing towards the aluminum skin? Do you think that would help? Just curious if anyone has experience or has seen these install techniques ?
We do allot of things like that in house building. Where and what you do kind of depends on weather you want the heat in or to stay out. I think some food old foil backed insulation does 90% of the work. Beyond that if you have a good heater and AC unit your going to be fine. all the extra juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze if you know what I mean.
Does the foil part go on the outside or inside?? I see some people put the foil in and some put it out.. is there a reason for this?
As best I can tell the side you put the foil on reflects the heat so summer you want it out and winter you want it to push your heat in. I guess it comes down to what time of year you camp and what coimate!
