2022 KTM Freeride E-XC 500 miles review and ride!
Watching your Shadow you have really good form. You wouldn't happen to be a member of the Moto academy, would you?
Thank you! Nope
Hi Batteryboy! Those trails look really amazing, single track is the best. Seems to fit the Freeride perfectly. I’ve been watching a few of your videos to get a better picture of what the Freeride e-xc is like and I’m getting there. 😊 Do you mind helping me out a bit? You have had it for quite some time now, I watched the other video where you gave it a long time review. Is there anything new that you have come across since then, have you had any problems with it? Have you tampered with it in anyway, switching something out or adjusted the suspension or stuff like that? You are coming from an ice bike earlier right? I’m coming from a mtb background and I think I would feel right at home with one of these since both brakes are controlled with the hands. No clutch, no gears and no footbrake to make things even more complicated, at least for me. 😁 Just concentrating on riding and having fun is what draws me in most. Not fumes, loud noice and servicing with oil changes, filters and stuff. Just more of basic maintenance and taking good care of it. It seems like you ride mostly in mode 2, right? I guess mode 3 is for more full on race style. Do you ride in mode 3 as well? In that case, where and when do you use mode 3? I’ve seen another fella, 50+ something, riding enduro races with his. He also seem to have two spare batteries and also having a Stark Varg coming. So obviously it can race as well, seems to be faster on tighter tracks than those that are more open and high speed, which is understandable. Seems like a lot of people are eyeballing the Stark Varg, have you as well? To me it seems like a complete beast and for a beginner perhaps a bit to dangerous even though you can just use like 20-30 horsepower if you want. It’s big and heavy and I’m kinda not so big and strong. And it also costs a lot, and you cannot swap batteries as fast as you can with the Freeride. I’ve seen somewhere that there is perhaps a new updated Freeride on the horizon with a bit bigger battery and some more stuff. But I don’t know if that’s correct. Amyway, keep riding that thing and have fun. And any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you for watching my videos! I've now ridden this bike exclusively for 2.5 riding seasons and love it more and more every time I ride. Honestly the only negative with this bike is range. I can get about 20 miles safely out of the battery pack. With 2 batteries I can ride all day without worry. I ride mostly in mode 2 because it makes the power buildup slower on the bottom end which makes navigating muddy conditions much easier. In Ohio we have some super slippery clay mud so I find mode 2 helps control wheel spin. I have not had a single issue with the bike. Im actually sending out my suspension this winter for a revalve as the suspension is probably the only other negative besides range. The suspension isn't bad, but the rear end does kick out from time to time when being aggressive. I have looked at the stark varg, but it's heavier and much more expensive. The freeride has all the power I need. I feel like this bike is PERFECT for strictly single track type trails that are loop style where you can easily get back to the truck for a battery swap. This bike does not have enough range or power for wide open full throttle fast trails. Please let me know if you have any other questions! If this bike could get 30-40 miles on one battery pack it would be PERFECT.
Getting back into bikes and i really would like to try this. Dad rides a crf450, hes 63 so his track days are slowing down. Brother rides a kx250f and hes still pretty fast. I would consider myself an aggressive intermediate rider, planning to do 60+ foot jumps. With a suspension upgrade will this bike do the trick?
I would say probably not the best use case for this bike. It could probably have enough power for that kind of riding, but it doesn’t have enough range for wide open motocross type riding. I would look at the stark varg for moto type riding. The KTM freeride excels in technical trail riding
do you still have that power shovel?
I know he didn’t answer you but I just bought one. It’s a great tool. Bit heavy so I bought the shoulder strap that helps a ton. I have a gas snow blower but this is great for times when I don’t want to pull out the bigger snow blower and for areas around my back yard that would make it too difficult to use the bigger gas powered blower. Overall highly recommend, it actually does well with wet snow too. Usually that hinders blowers but this thing is great at it
@@-tu1lj can that power shovel be used to clear snow piled up around a fire hydrant, like in this video ruclips.net/video/A4S64lP88xA/видео.html
@@mrbubetube haven’t tried moving a pile that big but my gut says no. Most regular sized snow blowers would struggle with a pile of snow that high. This is more for anywhere from 1-12” of snow in my opinion. We had 2” of heavy wet snow by me yesterday. I pulled out my 2 stage Toro and the shoot kept getting clogged. I couldn’t make it more than 4’ without having the wet snow clog the shoot. I pulled out the Ego with low expectations but thought I’d give it a shot. To my surprise it worked miles better than the Toro. I think it’s because there isn’t a narrow shoot that the snow has to travel through before it’s ejected. The Ego literally just throws the snow in front of you with no shoot to travel through. Hope that helps
@@-tu1lj ya but I'm wondering, can it be used to shave the pile down from the top layer by layer or would lifting it to the top of the pile be just as much work as regular shoveling?
@@-tu1ljon reason I'm asking is I'm seeing some public service messages on the TV news asking people to clear snow from fire hydrants. People aren't doing it, probably because of the heavy lifting. Just wondering if a power shovel would make it easier but I don't see any videos of it. I also tried asking the snow equipment dealers if it would work and they all said the same thing, "I don't know I never tried it" hahahahahaha
will just stick with my shovel lol
What's the name of this place? Looks dope I'd love to ride there!
Wayne National Forest!
@@brock1732 It's about a 7 hour drive, but I may have to check it out on my Talaria.
I like my snow Joe but I wish that I could direct the snow like with this one
Good to see you back out
4 speed trans would double its range @ high speed
Is it ok to use on decks?
I have a cement deck that it worked great on... not sure about a wood deck, but I don't see why it wouldn't work on a wood deck! Thanks for the comment
I love the electric, I truly appreciate your love for nature, I started with the talaria and have moved on to the Nicot full size. Awesome to see more people getting into electric bikes!
Thank you for the kind words!
Mine seized up on its 2nd use with oil seeping from the transfer case. Warranty replacement was delivered in a few days.
sucks you got a lemon, but great the company replaced it's product for you!
You didn’t say how Heavy battery is with Unit ? Extremely!
Great but, it's not self-propelled you have to push always..
How do you think this would fare in shoveling up sleet/ice?
I haven’t had the opportunity to use it on ice yet, sorry
Sounds very noisy or is it because your camera picks up noise well?
Not too bad with the noise… just a mild electric whine from the motor
Off of the initial launch you took from leaving your garage, the belt noise seemed kinda loud, and I'm wondering if the belt is too tight. It definitely wouldn't be surprising if it came from the factory with the belt to tight, or is it a chain?
It’s a chain drive. I had the dealership change to a chain drive before I picked it up
Here in Minnesota we are getting most snow in last 5 years. Have a large toro for big jobs but need something to do smaller snowfall. This gives me a good idea for that purpose. Getting up in age and want to stay in my home. This looks to make my job easier! Like no cord, directional of snow removal and ease. Thank you for this demonstration. Have a nice day
Thank you for watching the video!
Will it work in 6 inches of snow?
I haven't had that much snow to try it on. That amount sounds like a snow blower would be better
Just use mine today best power snow shovel on the market I was done in 10 minutes drive way and front of the house .
Nice!!
I’m thinking of buying one but not sure! I had xc xcw xcf just don’t want to be disappointed! Just for backyard track an some trail riding!
If you’re just using it for backyard and trail use then it will be an awesome bike for you… it’s not good for super long rides or long races though
@@brock1732 thanks I appreciate the information
@@mmig2116 I was worried about range but if you are doing single track it can go a good 3 or 4 hours
I ride mine for multiple days in my back yard trails/track.. love the bike. all depends on size of track and trails I guess.
just picked one up. New 2023 for $5,999.
Wish all the snow shovels would direct snow like this one.
Thanks for making this video. If wind is not strong from one side, it is always fastest to start the snowblower in the center of the driveway with the chute pointed to one direction and turn snowblower to the opposite direction at the end of the driveway, repeat the process until both sides are cleared. Driveway of this size and surface, the single stage unit would be a lot faster and easier on your back and the 2-stage would be a piece of cake like taking a dog for a walk for 10 minutes. I use this shovel for its portability to clear the small area at the backyard and transport it easily to the second floor balcony for snow removal only. Putting a Darwin's Grip on the shaft would help your back dramatically as well.
Thing cost almost as much as a stark Varg
I was lucky enough to get it before the price increase by KTM. Problem with the stark varg is that they still haven’t delivered a product and no one knows if the company will last. KTM isn’t going anywhere and have been delivering electric bikes for years now
@@brock1732 very true!!
I like your little dog. How much you want for her?
tree fiddy
If you ever sell her- we will beat you
Curious where you are riding, looks fun, maybe TN?
Could you make a video on the best way to wash the bike as I live I Ireland and the trails are muddy here and I have one of the ordered a 2022 model
Congratulations! It’s winter where I live and the parks are closed until early April so I won’t be able to make that kind of video for a few months…. It’s very easy to clean though. The bike comes with a rubber stopper to put over the battery contact. Then, I just power wash like a normal bike! It’s easier than a normal bike because there is no grease buildup at the exhaust.
I wish you mute the engine sound a bit. Its hard to hear you speaking.
Thank you for the feedback! I’m looking for a Bluetooth mic to help with that in the future
Nice review. Thank you
Thank you for watching!
I have been looking to change the tires out. I will check out the one's you chose
The Dunlop MX33's are absolutely great in the mud and intermediate terrain. They wear relatively quickly, but I was able to get one full session on a fresh set. They will likely wear quicker on more hard pack terrain.
Excellent videos!!!!!!! I really enjoy the commentary!!!
Thank you for the comment! New video coming soon!
Hi, nice to see one more freeride owner ! I have one, i am very happy too, i use it often in motocros tracks just for learning, yes suspension is too soft, i dont do big jumps, but in corners it’s perfect. Can you share source of info that ktm is planing 5.5kw power pack? I realy hope it’s true,i would order it without thinking. Because drive range is most anoying thing. What is your plan for updates? Keep making videos !
I agree, range is the most annoying thing. So far my only update was to change the tires to mx33 front and rear and place nitro mouse front and rear to replace the tubes. www.motorcycle.com/new-model-preview/pierer-mobility-confirms-a-ktm-e-duke-is-in-development.html?amp This link talks about a new freeride variant the “Freeride E LV with a 5.5kwh removable battery”
@@brock1732 Let’s hope that this battery will fit to our freerides. Also please make videos of your customization, my plan now is customize suspension.
The individual cells in the current battery could be changed to ones that have 30% more capacity. This alone would put the capacity in around 5.1kWh with more or less the same weight. Hopefully if there's an upgrade, the form factor stays the same but with upgraded cells. I wonder why no one has made an aftermarket battery yet for the e-xc.
@@vnrkk How can u increase the capacity? U have to buy a kit or something?
