What is the reason for the CFM engines to use N1 as the primary performance parameter, while IAE are using EPR?

Why N1 replace Egt as primary parameter

Completely to the point.❤ Just wanted to add something about the difference of surge in Axial and centrifugal compressors: As you correctly mentioned, surge in Axial flow compressors is the result of stall in most stages (stall results in lower pressure ratio and flow returns to the compressor), but in centrifugal compressors, surge is usually caused by a sudden flow reduction due to the blockage or pressure increase infront of compressor discharge, where the compressor is unable to overcome the pressure and flow reversal happens.
