After 35 rads and 2 big chemos, my biggest issue is getting back to normal food after 7 months on a PEG tube. Everything stills tastes rancid preventing me from eating orally.

Facebook has a wonderful head and neck support group. Several of them, all good. I didn't feel like going during treatment but these groups uplifted me greatly and we were able to share and help each other.

Look up Real Food Blends. They have a variety of pureed blends with all food groups in each pack. My insurance approved it after I was not able to tolerate high calorie milk/soy products.

These hospitals don’t tell you anything, cure the cancer, destroy your teeth and tell you to figure it out! Anyone starting treatment, please remove your teeth first! I trusted the best cancer hospital in NYC and my teeth are fried, and no one will help me! The pain from this is awful. Dentists are not equipped to treat you. You need specialists and there are none! Also after treatment please check your heart, they don’t warn you about the heart damage and how many survivors die of heart attacks! It’s all about the money folks! I’ll never trust these hospitals again!

I had cancer in my parotid gland and had it removed and radiotherapy(IMRT) 20sittings an year ago and have recovered a lot. I have been told that irritant foods like onion, pepper, black pepper, garlic and ginger can cause lymphedema and I have been told to avoid red meat and oil in my diet is there any study to support this? Can anyone help me regarding this?

I am a 72 year old female. I am 11 years out. Left tonsil cancer caught early by my GP at a yearly exam. Seven hour surgery to remove left tonsil with neck dissection on both sides. Robotic surgery at Barnes in St Louis. Lost 80 pounds in 4 months with the surgery and radiation. The radiation was much worse than the surgery. I continue to have dry mouth and chew no sugar gum constantly. Have just recently started having neck/shoulder spasms and developed cervical dystopia which Botox did not help. At year eight my teeth started crumbling and now have crowns on most my teeth despite using fluoride. Because I was diagnosed at Stage 1 with only one lymph node involvement I had the option of chemo or radiation or nothing. I chose the radiation. I wish I had not had the radiation for a Stage 1 and would have waited. Recently I started having issues with my left eye blurriness that comes and goes on a different level every day. Eye specialists have done numerous tests and they cannot figure out why it came on suddenly or why it varies from day to day. My eye is supposedly healthy. Do any of your panelists know if this could be another gift given to me by the radiation? This was an excellent presentation! Thank you.

Excellent interviews. Thank you. I’m 11 years out. Still have dry mouth and swallowing issues. I lost 80 pounds during treatment with no feeding tube. Had my surgery at Washington Hospital in St. Louis. Also had neck dissection on both sides with only one lymph node involved. My GP caught it at a regular check up appointment when she saw one tonsil enlarged. Interestingly now none of my docs ever look in my mouth. I still go to regular cancer check up appointments yearly in Celebration Florida. I have had 10 crowns on my teeth within the last two years as all of a sudden they started to crumble. It’s a rough road to travel but if caught early enough the outcomes are very positive. Blessings to all of you.

My boyfriend was just diagnosed with Squeamus cell carcinoma. He has a mass in his neck and 2 lymph nodes affected. The lymph nodes are right next to the mass and small, but so far, that's all I know. We have no idea what stage and are waiting to get a PET scan but as far as we can see on the CT, it hasn't spread. His last visit left me with more questions than answers and I am scared to death. He has been chewing tobacco for 30 years so I'm sure that's what caused it. I'm desperate for any information that anyone can give me. Idk what his chances are of beating this. I have an idea of what to expect because my aunt and sister both beat cancer. My sister had lymphoma and my aunt had melanoma that went to her lung and had to get half of it removed. I know the staging for his cancer is different once it affects the lymph nodes. Any advice or answers would be appreciated.

I just love medical professionals' approach-- be tough with yourself-- think of swallowing as doing a chin-up-- good exercise. Patients do better when they force themselves to eat. Oh boy. Spoken right out of academia fairyland. I have a friend going through chemo-radiotherapy for stage 3 pharyngeal and lymph node cancer. He is 50, trim, athletic and previously healthy. Five weeks into treatment he is like a little old man. He vomits continually, has lost his voice, gags on liquids, neck is burned and hair on the back of his head has burned off, his mouth is full of sores from mucositis, his throat is raw, he has GERD, and is constantly expelling mucous. He is so weak he can barely stand, He was underweight a bit when he started, now he has lost 18 lbs. He is getting periodical IV hydration and resisted getting even that because of his 'team'. He is resisting a feeding tube-- also because of his team. Easy for them to say force yourself to eat and drink. Many of them have never even experienced illness let alone cancer. I've had extensive stomach and esophageal surgery. I needed a feeding tube but was afraid of it. I did not know I was starving until my kidneys started shutting down and I became extremely weak. I didn't know you could starve with as much weight on as I had. My surgeon brought me back into hospital and ordered a tube whether I wanted it or not. I FELT SO MUCH BETTER!! Listen you trained professionals! When you want to die like my friend currently does, FEELING GOOD IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! Ever think of that? Or is all your consideration saved for studies and empirical data?? I was getting consistent nutrition. I was no longer vomiting and retching (I even cracked a rib, I crawled to my bed). I slept better and my mood improved. I cannot describe the relief. I want my friend to have this relief. I don't want to watch him cry in agony and want to give up. But his over-educated young life-experience-deficient team wants him to 'hang in there and keep trying to force the stuff in orally'. WHY? He can do his swallowing exercises with the tube in and even take stuff 'recreationally' if he feels up to it. Risk of infection can be monitored. Mine was. I survived because of that tube. I had COMFORT for the first time in months. I didn't forget how to swallow. STOP ASKING OTHERS TO BE SUPER HUMAN because of your data. Or until you can prove you could do it if it were happening to YOU. Some people may be super human. Some are not. In this case my life experience overrides your empirical data which is usually skewed anyway by patients trying to please their doctors and be positive and brave. I'm ashamed of our health care people. First, do no harm.

I am also an oropharyngeal cancer induced by HPV+, had 2 surgeries, one of them was for 9 hours, I am now a worrier, and willing to share my journey

Mine took 2 years to diagnose. It was in the ear canal and it was so painful I was swallowing codeine like sweets. I didn't care if the pills killed me. I just wanted the pain to end. So with RADS and extensive surgery I got better. Better but still affected by the treatment. I can no longer hear well or walk due to balance. I'm posting this as a warning. If you have any symptoms, pain, hoarse voice etc please pester your doctor until you are tested. Don't give up, keep speaking up. And spread the word - while you can still talk. I am a lifetime non smoker and have not drunk alcohol for 30 years. This doesn't just effect smokers.

I had a cancerous right tonsil removed, but it turned out to be B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma. At first, the doc thought it was HPV related.
