LM386 Amplified Crystal Radio

My third coil(s) set. Testing amplification of the AM band from a crystal radio based on the "Mystery Radio" design, with some tweaks. Home made air variable capacitor, and using a 1N34A diode with the LM386 IC amp on 8W / 8 Ohm speaker, with volume control. Note: The segment of the song "Analog Kid" by Rush (played off RUclips, incidentally) is used only for the demonstration of the amplifier....

Some airline entertainment (for the crew) while being ferried to the aircraft! Sorry about the quality, I used my cell phone camera. Pumita is the nick name of one of our apron shuttle bus drivers at Quito airport, and he enjoys regaling us with some of his karaoke skills to start off our day. Nice video!! You can still improve the selectivity and sound Use this same circuit given in this video! just some modifications 1st tip - By putting the 'speaker with box' (no need to open) close to the coil as much as possible without distorting the sound (too close causes overdrive input) buttt the capacitance will be more sensitive, you have to adjust it very slowly and carefully (because of the increased selectivity) you can try another one method if other is problematic 2nd tip - use a separate smaller coil 1/5th or 1/6th of the main coil wound on the same tube (5mm to 10mm gap) should be connected between the (crystal radio) 'audio out' and 'audio in' of the amp !you have to adjust carefully! Good luck :-)

Yes, I used a 7.5 VDC source on this one. Check out the schematic at 0:43 it is there, towards the top right.

Analog Kid by Rush! An excellent choice for testing the amplifier.
Yeah, I was on a bit of a Rush re-listening binge at the time. That LM386 finally ended up on a home-brewed PCB, with volume and gain control pots, plus a bass boost switch, which is about as far as I can take it. I was impressed that it handles high impedance circuits like this crystal set so well and the computer output too. It gets used often as it is now for amplification tests of different radio designs. At present I am tweaking a very successful and simple TRF radio design (which does not need a long, exterior wire antenna like this one), and working on making an amplifier for it from scratch with a Darlington transistor and a hacked, small transformer to obtain the right impedance matching to an 8 Ohm speaker. It will never be as good as a pre-made IC like the LM386, but what can you learn if you don't experiment? LOL! I'll upload a video when it is finished. :D
Estimado Capitán, seria bueno que nos puedas ayudar con una explicación sobre los vientos cruzados de este época, la aproximación y aterrizaje es algo que uno siempre le tiene temor por el movimiento fuerte del avión y ya me pasó dos ocasiones que el piloto no pudo aterrizar y volvió a subir para un segundo intento, son peligrosos esos vientos y sin precaución puede llegar a afectar de alguna forma a la seguridad?
Saludos, gracias por el comentario. Describir exactamente en términos meteorológicos el motivo de la turbulencia moderada que se experimenta excede el espacio aquí disponible. No obstante, y en breve, son producto de una combinación de los efectos de corrientes ascendentes y descendientes (térmicos), vientos prevalecentes de la época, y obstrucción orográfica. En sí no exceden la capacidad de control ni los límites estructurales de la aeronave. Aplicamos procedimientos de monitoreo de parámetros durante la aproximación, y si de hecho el avión no esta completamente estabilizado para realizar un aterrizaje seguro (osea, sí la turbulencia cause que los parámetros salgan de límites estrictos) se efectúa una aproximaión frustrada. Claro que esta acción causa una leve demora en la llegada, pero garantiza la seguridad del pasajero.
