Battle Stations is absolutely amazing.

For those few wondering who Dwight Schultz is listed with Denise Crisby, he's the guy that plays Lt. Reginald Barkley. And J.G. Hertzler was one of those man-of-many-faces guest stars they hired a few times each, with his most frequently appearing character by far being Martok, at first general commanding the Klingon forces, then chancellor leading their entire government.

The initial statement of the enterprise theme is one of the most gorgeous versions of it in the entire franchise. Almost like he wrote it as if he were greeting an old dear friend. Battle stations is so fantastic as well. The two times he slips in the enterprise theme really get ya going , and then he’s got this star trek meets Air Force One vibe happening that I really love. There’s also something so gut wrenching about how quiet and tender, yet absolutely tense and anxious it is. It would have been easy to overscore data’s death. Same applies to the following cues. It’s a quiet sadness. They’re still trying to process the loss, amid a lot of changes. Riker’s farewell also benefits from this subtlety.

The end of “Take Us In”, after the Klingon theme cameo for Worf, has so much swagger. It’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard. Tragic that the Holoship cue was never included on the original album. Such a cool aural journey that explodes with rhythmic energy at the end. The cute electronic accompaniment for data entering the water is a real highlight as well. But holy the revised version of The Healing Process slaps so much harder than the original. Fantastic stuff. I really dig the part where Riker says the line “set a collision course” and that whole thing where it’s basically just the synthesizer, piano, percussion, and violins/violas doing a variation on the main motif starting at 34:43
