    That TBone ribbon was sooo noisy. I have one of their 57 inspired mics and have to say I love that. Which is strange as I tend to hate 57s. I have a JM47 somewhere too, in the case with the VC3 mark 2 iirc. Beautiful mic for the time and the price it was made. Always wondered what a modern equivalent would be, as I struggle to find a working second on ebay etc these days. Mine is still reasonably good shape last time I took it out.

    • @tedfletcher7334
      @tedfletcher7334 Год назад

      The 828 Mk3 mic amp is unique in that it uses descrete transistors and works in 'class A' . It is very low noise and almost impossible to overload. The XTX131 is a 'class A/B' type, very clean sounding. The Brick mic amp uses a transformer and a MC4580 low noise chip using my 'shared gain' technique to achieve good overload performance.

    • @tedfletcher7334
      @tedfletcher7334 Год назад

      It depends on what you mean by 'similar'; it's a very basic design and uses the XTX131 V2 descrete low noise op-amp simply coupled to input and output transformers. The XTX131 dates back to the 80s when a number of manufacturers developed their own descrete op-amps to achieve reliable low-noise performance. We were experimenting with descrete op-amps at Alice in the early 70s and I suspect that Andy followed on with his own experiments after he took over the Company in the early 80s.

    Very pleased to have been made aware of this video by a reference in the UK TV/Radio Broadcast Engineers group on Facebook. I have been learning a little about psychoacoustics recently and it appears that our perception of a sound is greatly affected by it's starting transient long after the transient has been and gone. This would explain how the mic amp overload behaviour described could have a more profound influence on the perceived audio quality in a way that our traditional 'steady state' type of measurements will not show up. Regarding the influence of an extended frequency response, is this more to do with the amplifier's slew rate? A very high frequency response requires a fast slew rate which will affect the fidelity of these all-important transients.

    • @tedfletcher7334
      @tedfletcher7334 Год назад

      Thanks for your comment.... regarding slew-rates, yes they will have a bearing on the reproduction of very high frequencies, but not a lot; a modest rate of say 5V/uS will have little effect on the low level presence of 100KHz, but an op-amp experiencing transient shut-down is something to worry about!

  • @LondonSteveLee
    @LondonSteveLee Год назад

    With the advent of 32bit ADCs there's an increasing fashion now to plug mics straight into the ADC bypassing the mic-pre altogether and using purely digital gain to bring the mic up to a suitable level, I guess you are bypassing the noise floor of a second set of circuitry and another source of distortion. Whether this purity sounds nice to the human ear is another subject altogether!

    • @tedfletcher7334
      @tedfletcher7334 Год назад

      That's asking yet another set of questions; I would wonder about the economics of using 32bit ADCs,why not get the same effect with 24bit and a simple (!) cheap mic amp? But still the biggest problem we face is at the other end of the system, the conversion of electrical energy into physical sounds.

    Ironically, the audio quality of this video could have been a lot better. 😉 Perhaps a large part of our perception of realism is due to the psychoacoustics of the outer ear. Its response varies according to the direction from which sound waves arrive because they are affected by the convoluted structure. Binaural recording only gets us part-way there because the recording is made using only a rough approximation of the ears our brains spent a lifetime learning to use and, if using headphones, any head movement will immediately be detected as not having the expected effect. Loudspeakers, unless you’re fortunate enough to have an anechoic chamber in which to house them, will not provide convincing realism because room acoustics will confuse the image.

    • @tedfletcher7334
      @tedfletcher7334 Год назад

      I can only partially agree with 'fazerider9287', I think that the convolutions of the outer ear have only a small effect on perception, a much larger effect is the positioning of the ears and the exact distance between them (HRTF). I firmly believe that loudspeakers (or should I say 'transducers') will be able to provide convincing realism based on object-based sound reproduction and not necessarily under anechoic conditions.

      'Distorted' is an emotive word; yes, it's 'distorted' in that it has been altered, first by the microphone and mic amp, then by the compressor, then by the A/D converter, then by the video editing process, then by processing in the RUclips transmission system, so like all other videos it could be said to be 'distorted', but is it clean and interesting and does not make you reach for the volume control to hear it? My purpose in designing the 588 was to come up with a compressor that is simple and quick to use, is not expensive and improves clarity. In the video the compressor is used quite hard, mainly so that the dynamic effects can be heard.... and I hope appreciated.

      I seldom get irritated by comments, but there are exceptions! My designs are NEVER compromises! My 538 compressor is an example of my take on what an opto compressor should sound like. • @rodericogarcia
      @rodericogarcia 2 года назад

      @@tedfletcher7334 I don´t know why you get "irritated", and I don´t know why you think I suggest this device is "a compromise". As you say, this compressor may be "an example of your take", on what YOU think an opto compressor shoud sound like. Of course, there are millions of people who may think this is the best opto compressor in the world. Many others probably don´t. But there´s no need to get irritated just because of this!!!. I´m just an audio technician, I don´t really know what there´s inside this devices, just have an idea of what they do, and how to use them. But believe me: I KNOW WHAT I LIKE, and I´m not arguing about whether this is a masterpiece of engineering, which I´m sure It may be, or just another compressor in the market. I think you take my comments very personally. In fact, if you read my comment, all I was saying was that I need a buss compressor, and the sales engineer suggested me to take a look at this 538 model, and I have found the Tegeler better suiting my needs, delivering a more spacious sound, more low end (of course, Tegeler includes a Pultec EQ inside.... unfair comparison), and it´s clear that these products are different. In the end, I agree that this 538 offers a very good compromise between price and quality, and I don´t find this nothing to be offended. Someone could find an LA-2A better sounding, for whatever reason, because in this world of sound creation, normally, THERE´S NO ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Technical specifications may vary, but people may prefer some kind of character, coloration, over the other. Some people like the Yamaha NS10. I detest them, I´m better with my Neumann´s. And some people could think that 4k$ for the Urei is worth it. (I personally don´t). But that´s what I mean, this 538 offers a really good compressor for a reasonable price, that´s what my comment was all about. Mr Fletcher: my dad (who passed away this february) was the most inteligent person I have ever known. He could build an engine with any spare parts he could find in a drawer, in a morning. And something I learnt from him was not to be offended by anyone´s comments against one´s potentials or capabilities. My daughter herself has inherited my dad´s intelligence (it looks like she has this kind of brain that only one in 10.000 people have for mathematical and logical reasoning). And she has learnt to act pretty much the same. Some kids at school laugh at her for having fun calculating the distance between the sun and Proxima Centauri (in kilometers, of course, long live the metric system!) . She knows that, even when comments have a bad intention, it´s always a better option not to take them personally. Most people in this life don´t behave like they would like to, but simply, as good as they can, taking in consideration their background and circumstances. So, Mr Fletcher, please, don´t get irritated; don´t feel offended, there´s no reason, and no need. Please, excuse my messy english, and have my admiration for your work, from Spain.

Is this setup like any other dual width module according to the API500 spec? Thanks.

      I'm sorry it's confusing! Originally, I designed the 538 as a stereo compressor to work from a single connector strip. That's possible using aux in and out on the Midas and Fredenstein frames, but in the last few days I had a number of requests like yours, engineers who wanted the compressor but have different frames, so I have designed a mod so that the compressor engages with two edge connectors using standard in and out connections. This modified version (TFPRO 538 V5) is now available and will be ready for delivery 28th July. Orders now possible on the TFPRO website or direct to me.

    Lovely to see these coming back into production, I really hope they do well. They were under appreciated gems for too long (though I did take the opportunity to tuck away a pair of 828s and a 1228 over the years). I've also got three ACM desks, and I would absolutely love to see some videos about these consoles, as I think they are truly special beasts. Who knows... Maybe they may also make a comeback in some form? A channel strip based on an ACM design would be a lovely thing to add to the rack...
