Wrong. Look up Gnome, KDE and Cinnamon. Choose whichever looks better to you. Once you have your choice, google "[choice] distro" and choose the first option. Even if that is Ubuntu. It does not fucking matter that Canonical is bad. They are still waaay better than people who are new to Linux are used to: Windows and MacOS.

    • @hundvd_7

2:45 Wrong. The comparison is more like if you've been a life-long (motor)bike owner, but now you decided to get a car. In which situation, you should look up the most superficial things: I want a fast one I want a safe one I want a pretty one I want a cheap one And then get the first thing that loosely matches your criteria. Because you _do_ have a reason to switch. What makes you hate your current bike? Is it too dangerous? Maybe get a Volvo. Do you like the You _do_ need to make a bit of an effort. Because if you care about looks the most, then you will be scarred _for life_ if you buy, say, a Daihatsu Materia, just because some random dude on the internet told you is the best car. And you will never have the patience to look at even Lamborghinis ever again, as you will just go back to your bike-for the rest of your life. You NEED to feel an improvement if you are going to switch.

Linux mint has a software center update manager lets you change where your updates come from. Sometimes updates fail. I’ve found changing local mirror always fixes the problem in the update manager!!

YT filter doesn't like my comment for some unknown reason... so... workaround time... Please read the rest of the comment below the break. You be the judge as to whether the YT filter is being dumb or not. Hard pass: Anything connected to Canonical is basically a hard pass for me. Even though Mint has a Debian version. I'll still use Debian of course to some extent if I feel like it, but there are ''better'' options available there as well. Install Manjaro instead, if you can't be bothered to learn how to install Arch. By the time you are ready for Arch through Manjaro, you'll never go back to Debian based distros; let alone Ubuntu (Canonical infested Debian). Also: From Trend Micro website. "On February 21, Linux Mint project head Clement Lefebvre, announced on a blog that “Hackers made a modified Linux Mint ISO, with a backdoor in it, and managed to hack our website to point to it.” Lefebvre stressed that only downloads from February 20 were compromised and that the site was subsequently taken offline to prevent further downloads and correct the issue. As stated in Linux Mint’s blog, the hacker accessed the underlying server via the team’s WordPress blog. From there, the hacker manipulated the download page and pointed it to a malicious FTP server that contained the modified version of Linux Mint. This version included malware which was used to implement a backdoor. Once activated, it surreptitiously connects to an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server where it waits for commands and which could possibly launch DDoS attacks. The malware can also uninstall itself on affected machines to remove traces of evidence that it was there." The devs claim the distro is safe, but I don't trust devs that can't keep their server secure when it comes to OS's. Yes, they caught it quickly, but the damage is done to the reputation. The fact it was a backdoor implemented into the distro, and not the only one that I have found on it either... is the reason I stay away from mint entirely, despite them having a debian version. If not for that security breach, I'd just avoid their Ubuntu distro version. And yes, I would be the same way if it happened to Arch, Gentoo, Red hat, you name it. Even FreeBSD would get the boot from me, if such a thing were to happen to them. To have your distro compromised in such a way, is such a scrub mistake, that I cannot be bothered to trust said devs afterwards; especially when other backdoors not dealt with can be found. Jitsi, the voip app, has a google backdoor. Or, pretty sure it's one. Didn't bother to continue testing after finding it. Just removed the distro. And this was after giving Mint the one free pass of "Well, hackers be hackers, here's your get out of jail free card." Just say no to Mint.

@arthurrock4979 Don't lose sleep over the linux terminal? You have no idea what your talking about. Linux is huge in the server space, and one of the biggest reasons for this is the command line. In fact the IT experts lost so much sleep over this that they created windows subsystem linux to run the command line on windows. But that doesn't have anything to do with linux desktop. It's linux mint, the times you will have to touch a commandline are almost nil unless you want to.

@@LinuxInvictus I'd like it to be just as necessary, as the Windows terminal. But theory and practice are two totally different phenomenons (one is fantasy, the other reality, just like Communism proved), that you're not gonna need the terminal for even the stupidest problems, to be taking whole weeks of insults from the stuck up, snobbish Linux community anyway. All of this blabber about freedom of use with Linux, until people wanting to avoid the greatest pain in the ass with the system, the terminal! Linux - terminal = success, what Android proved. Microsoft, Apple, Google got nobody normal wants to deal with terminals, except PC Linux distro developers.

@@LinuxInvictus You're not gonna fix the stupidest problem on Linux, without the terminal, cause non of these geniuses bother to even create troubleshooting GUIs. I wanna use my PC when I wanna type, not type when I wanna use my PC, like everybody else with better things to do.

I consider linux mint to be de-enshitified ubuntu. Literally everything that irks me about ubuntu is done away with in mint. Stuff like that stupid DE, everything being a snap package, and the Amazon search spyware. The only downside is that Cinnamon can't use wayland(very good yet).

I 100% Agree with this. Though I want to add that even back the unity debacle where they pushed that garbage fire on us they, they still had a tendency to push out releases at 80%

I had no money for a new desktop, so I pulled a Dell Optiplex 9020 out of a donation pile a family member had made. It had been used in a law office. I put Linux Mint on it and had a perfectly functioning desktop that I still use. I've upgraded a few parts since then. I am still new to Linux, but Mint was a big factor in smoothing my start into the Linux world. I still use a MacBook Air as my daily driver, but I kept an older MacBook Air I would otherwise have recycled...and put Mint onto that as well.

It's actually kinda funny how linux mint is actually a pretty heavy linux distro but it will still often run easily on old hardware

I have watched several guides on installing Linux Mint for beginners and not one of them has gone through the steps of verifying the ISO after downloading it, as the Linux Mint site says to do. Are the mirrors trustworthy enough to skip this step? Is verifying the ISO something only the very paranoid need to do? I looked up the verification process and it seems complicated and pretty sketchy itself on Windows (dowloading an exe then running a bunch of shell commands).
