Reflocking instructions and post season upkeep on some avian x goose decoys. This technique is used for all flocked decoys but today we are keeping it simple and just touching up some worn flocking and brightening up the chin patches and rumps.
Faded Flocked Decoys? Avian-X turning yellow? Easy fix!
Просмотров 8638 месяцев назад
A simple DIY for anyone that may have faded factory flocked avian-x, GHG, or Dakota decoys (among others). If your decoys have turned yellow or pink after only a few seasons don’t buy more that will just do the same thing in another year…. Fix them right and hunt them for a decade. This is the casual black duck flocking how-to. No airbrushing or art skills needed. You will need some feather bro...

Airbrushing Flocked Duck Decoys - Black Duck
What was the tan paint you used?
Can you give me the rundown on colors and the type of finish the colors are ?
Do you flock the heads green and tails black or paint them?
Just getting into making decoys here. Thanks for the video.
What do you charge to do a dozen duck decoys and a dozen goose decoys?
Beautiful decoy.
Love when they go 💤 lol
Why is gloss paint better than the others?
Gloss cures harder and holds the flocking better. When used on top of or under flocking it doesn’t shine.
@@andymartel7585 So if I wanted to flock unflocked heads on a goose. Gloss is the way to go instead of a flat paint.
I flocked my mallard heads using flat rustolium and mallard green flocking but it sparkles. Any tips on how to get rid of that?
Use gloss black and black flocking then airbrush the green on.
I just flocked some mallards using flat rustolium paint and mallard green flocking. However, my flocking is giving off a sparkle effect. Is there any recommendations on how to fix it or do it better?

When mixing the brown in this video, what is the actual rustoleum brown? Flat, gloss, brown, dark brown, etc?
Gloss. Always gloss.
when your ship comes in try Iwata airbrushes Nice job!
Idiots
Cry harder about it
Always great work
Andy, glad so see another video! Do you flock drake widgeon? If so what do you use to bring out the amber color of the body? I've used an orange base paint with brown flocking and had good luck, but wondered if you had a different process or tips.
I have and I do. They are coming later this spring in their own video, drakes and hens both. I use sand paint with tan bisque flocking then layer burnt sienna and raw umber VERY lightly on the sides to slowly build up the color. Lastly I’ll cut in some white then overspray grey on the chest to give it that purplish/wine color. I don’t know why grey works for that. But it does. Personally, I think wigeon are about as difficult as it gets when it comes to flocking and airbrushing decoys. I have some pictures of them on my facebook page, Two Rivers Counterfeits Waterfowl Decoys, and the Decoys Flockers group has several as well.
Glad to see you back. Got a couple dozen I'm planning to do soon
Right on. Been slacking on posting. Got a pretty good lineup of stuff coming down the pipe. Both flocking and just general decoy repair and making for the average hunter.
Had to wait a while, but thank you for sharing. You haven't aged a day!
Ooh I made this thing a while back. Just got around to doing the editing and splicing. Still got the same raggedy threads though. Got em on right now!
I appreciate your videos and the tips you give for correcting mistakes as you go. Both of my boys have watched your videos several times and started airbrushing their rigs. Haven’t flocked yet but I told them they should start with my decoys. 😂
Wonderful! That’s why I make them. I love hearing that they are helpful. Makes it worth it!
Curtain blind is still on my list to try, everyone seems to stay booked with referrals only. Would love to try it and make a video to share this historical way of hunting. Cool video
What brand of paints do you use for your airbrushing?
Depends on the situation Jerry. Most of what I use on the bodies is thinned Rustoleum gloss. Cheap, durable, and sprays really well. Same stuff we use to adhere the flocking to the body. I thin with naphtha til it’s about the consistency of whole milk. Some colors I use Createx, and the irradescent/pearlized colors are createx also. Lastly, I use some goldens products. The pyrole orange is great for hen and speck bills. I use some of their colors for shading as well.
What did you use to flock the bodies and heads? I think I heard you mention that the body was feather brown over gloss black. How about the head?
On drakes I use goose grey over almond. On hens I like a mix of feather brown and goose grey that I call “dirty head” over almond.
After you clean them up and prime them are you flocking the whole body before painting and if so what color is the flocking?
Yes I usually flock the body as well. Its easier to work on birds with removeable heads because you can do two different colors the same day. I use goose grey flocking over white paint (usually) on mallard drake bodies.
Too bad it looks like you stopped making videos, I've learned a lot from you already. I would love something that shows how you flock your decoys because I love how yours turn out.
I haven’t stopped. I have one on deck that will be published soon. My son had a very comprehensive surgery that required most of my attention this past year.
Where can I get plans for a build?
No idea sir.
Andy I have enjoyed watching your videos. I would like to paint a dozen mallards, can you give a list of paint colors and where to purchase them
Just painting or flocking and then painting?
I know this is a few years old but hopefully you still read comments. It’s that time of year to start getting ready for the season and my wood ducks looked terrible. I was inspired by this and decided to try. It’s my first flock and paint and it came out ok. Got more to do and hopefully I’ll improve. Thanks for posting this video.
Had any luck yet? Smacked a couple ducks last week on some old ghg decoys I wanna reflock and paint, but don’t know which way to go first
I check in every so often
Is it normal to find mallard nests hundreds of yards from water, at the base of a maple tree? Found one may of '22
You’d need a biologist to answer that one.
Ruddy brown is the old name for the red brick color.
Where can I find a plan on how to construct one of these?
Nice work
Sir, I am new to airbrushing and got a kit at Harbor Freight just to play with while I paint some of my old hunt over duck decoys. I want to paint the HEADS of some of my Red Head Duck Decoys.... What color and pant would you recommend?
Andy what is your best all around Airbrush modle # Im looking for a new brush and what compresser do you use ? thanks I notice you use several airbrushes i guess for quick color changes and oh yes what size needles do you use. Thanks
Very nice!
You are very detail very interesting how you do this next time you make a video make sure we can see what you’re spraying rather than the back of your hand
I do the best I can with what I have, which is a cheap Amazon phone tri-pod and an i-phone. I try and get as much of it as i can on camera.
Great video Andy. Are these paints all latex paints or a combination?
Could you post a video of how you make those decoys out of the trailer block foams and where to cut.
Hi Andy, I recently found you’re RUclips channel. I’d like to begin airbrushing my decoys as well. Can you please direct me to where you purchase you’re air brush and supplies? Also a paint chart that i can use to match paint to the ducks and geese. Great job on youre revival of decoys. Thank you!
Why do you not use white or grey flocking for the whole decoy and then airbrush the colors you are wanting? I’m wanting to start doing this also and I’m just wondering. Thanks
Thinned oil paints, while still pretty durable, are not as durable as MOST colors of nylon flocking (green for example washes out really bad, thats why i dont flock green on mallard heads). So by using black on the tail and brown on the chest (I sprayed it in the video but since I have gone back to flocking the brown on because I have found it to be more durable) I get a better and more durable finished product. I have found that it maintains its contrast better when it gets dirty as well. Two layers of properly colored flocking and oil paint are better than one light layer of paint so to speak.
I know it’s been a while since you’ve posted the video. But what do you clean your airbrush out with after using oil based paints, such as the rust oleum hunter green. If you could get back to me it would be greatly appreciated.
I like acetone for oils and believe it or not, windex for createx and golden acrylics. I have a video on the channel about "backwashing" which covers what you are asking. Every so often (about once a week or anytime I'm switching from acrylic to oil or vice versa, I'll tear the airbrush down completely and use citrus strip to thoroughly clean all the internals. Q-tips are handy to have on hand as well as a blow gun for your compressor to blast out hard to reach places.
Do you make airbrushed t shirts as well?
Hey Andy what type of air brush do you have?
I use paasche VL brushes. Size 3 and 5 tips/needles. I love them but I haven’t ever used anything else. I can rebuild them with my eyes shut lol.
Fake, at 25:00 you can clearly see he’s holding a live goose, not a decoy. Thought you could fools us huh?!
Best way to describe it: “work of art”
never mind.......found it below while reviewing my post, thanks
Hi Andy. I have really enjoyed watching you transform so so decoys into some very realistic pieces. i used to make the L L Bean type cork decoys years ago and truly wish that we had flocking and airbrushes then. I'm a little color blind so I would like to know the colors and source for your drake mallard flocking. I have not found Dove Grey from Superior (really needs to be by name), but several people have mentioned Goose Grey or light or dark goose. thanks for the entertainment. Very realistic decoys and very understandable tutorial. Thanks, Robbie
Hey Robbie: Yes, I use Goose Grey nylon flocking. Its by far the most commonly used color on waterfowl I find. The end result is greatly influenced by the color paint you use to adhere the flocking with. In the case of drake mallards, I prefer Gloss White to use as adhesive. Some folks prefer a bit darker/early season drake, in which case smoke grey or a mix of white and grey can be used. Goose grey looks kinda brownish when you look at it, but that mallard in my profile picture is done with goose grey. As are hen mallards (with almond underneath), canada geese (with almond on wings and light grey on sides and chest), hen woodies (with hen brown underneath), gadwall (with grey or almond underneath respectively), hen canvasbacks, hen ringneck side pockets, heads on black ducks, teal..... the list goes on lol.
Any videos on airbrushing full body canada geese?
Where is the step 3 video on how to flock the decoys?
Hello Andy...I've upland bird hunted most of my life..sept 25 2021 my brother and nephew took me for the first time duck and goose hunting this last season .. for the whole season I got all combined 2 Greenwing teal 5 bluewing teal 1 mallard 2 lesser Canadians...now I'm hooked!!! My brother gave me 2 dozen mallard decoys and thanks to you and your videos I'm going to flock and airbrush them..thank you
What’s a good airbrush to buy?
How do you actually flock the decoys?
