We were camping off 395 coming home from a road trip a few days ago and just at sundown an F18 flew in from the Death Valley side and started dancing around and above the clouds over the Sierras, in and out of afterburner for a good 5 minutes. Then he turned westward and disappeared. So cool.

There was a large tree about 35-40 feet up when originally climbed by Chouinard. It was rated 5.7 with the tree but is considerably more difficult now; most of the regulars call it a 5.8 climb. I've done it twice while the tree was still present and once since it fell out of the crack system. The tree remains are around the base--at least it was still there around 2017.
Thanks for sharing some history about the climb! It was a super fun first multi pitch! I'd love to do it again sometime!

Hi John, once you topped this route what is your strategy for lowering? I find grigri doesn't work too well when the bottom of the rope is weighted, just looking for some insight. Beautiful climb would love to get on some granite soon! Thanks :)
From where you park the trail leads out to the top of the crag. There are 2 bolts at the top where you rap down almost 200' to start the climb. From the 2 bolts at the top you can re-direct your rope to climb several other routes there. Look up Squarenail on Mountain Project for for info.. It's a super fun crag with mostly slab sport routes. I only use the Grigri for rappelling, not for top rope soloing.

The main location is at the Father Crowley Vista Point - Rainbow Canyon. It's roughly 8 miles west of Panamint Springs. There are signs for the Vista Point turnout on the Highway. It's a large parking lot and the best location to start out at. There is also a display case showing the aviation history of the canyon. Once there you will see the Ridgeline and canyon and the many different locations to view from. Due to the 2019 F-18 crash in the canyon, only Civilian Aircraft are allowed to fly it now. Hope that helps!

nice to see bodysurfing at the wedge. it's a whole different deal being in wild nature without the advantage of a stick for protection, . like a board surfer . this place is famous for being responsible for more lost fins and broken collar bones than any other place in southern California.

No military aircraft however there have been private planes seen in the canyon! Thats my understanding.

As far as I know, there are no more Military flights, however private aircraft have been seen.
