Hi My Name is Slade. I make DIY projects that relate to my work as a film maker. I run a production company and always try to add a personal touch and a little extra content to support the work I do for clients. The Clients seem to like it, I hope you like it too. I moved from England to Finland in 2018 and am doing my best to build a personal and professional brand.
Pliis is pronounced 'Please' in Finland. (they don't have a word for please, so as an English man I could couldn't call my micro production company anything else).

Following a pilgrim trail to gravel paradise!
I’ve been out again this time with some new friends. I found out I’ve wasted my summer in the Gym, when I could have been enjoying this. I found that I’ve been too much of a fair weather cyclist. I’ve found the shortcomings in my kit.
Most importantly, I found out I’m in Love. I’m in Love with Finland, Laavu camping, bike packing, the wild, the gravel, the
forest. We met up in the evening, after everyone had finished work and set off into the woods.
We quickly lost the light, and had an entertaining ride into the darkness. I was in a terrible headspace for banter, I probably came off quite quiet. Finland has let me sit in silence for a bit too long.

Nice video! Answered my question about this wireless derailleur. Mechanical is just dont work in cold weather.
@@Gogoplex Tell ya friends, nobody watched this video last year. I'm hoping it reaches a wider audience this time around. I've found the battery lasted 700k in summer, I've not tested the range in the winter because I tend to sleep indoors in -20°!
@SladeTakalaLamey I'm not worried about the battery. I can take it in with my el bike battery. I was more worried about the shifting in cold temperatures. Here in Norway we also gets pretty cold. Hate to stand in the road on my way to work at 0600 😅
@@Gogoplex Ouch. I'm hoping to do The Bright Midnight next year. Maybe see you there.
I have 2 Waltly's now. Just recently built up a funky fat "gravel bike" , with a cane creek invert fork. Split top tube to boot. It has an anodized purple logo ..."partypace ".
Missed you for espresso on board with Davide, Slade. Veeeery cosy.
Buttons: so much better than bungies.
Have fun mate and lots of mushies!
Hey, excellent video! embarking on making one myself. quick question though, the 2 bolts that screw the carbon poles together at the back and top, and the 2 that go into the rack adaptor, what size are those bolts? cheers
Cheers, Glad you liked it. The bolts that go into the frame and adapter are standard M5. The bolts that connect the carbon crossbar are M6.... Tip, I bought some Ti M5 bolts they are really cheap on Ali and much less likely to sheer under any strain.
@@SladeTakalaLamey cheers, will order some now! Gonna try video me doing it. Will make sure to share end results. Depending how well this goes I might also attempt a front rack at some point
@@ollieknight45 good luck! Make sure you share your results. I'll do a comment style reply!
I'm very happy to see each new post, Slade. Thank you.
Your kit is just so beautiful! That aerobar bag is out of this world 😍😍😍
Cheers, it's made from recycled ski pants, and my daughters old waterproofs
Nice video!
Love it! Brilliant - subscribed. I was looking for something like this to carry a dry bag & light change of clothes / plimsoles.
Looking forward to the myog vid
Ok so i have ZERO chemistry education and bought 5ml of formic acid and a lot of pure copper powder. I thought id make less solution because the formic acid in holland was very expensive. I had my painting mask on and also rubber gloves but honestly, my wife came to my shed to tell me something and when i took my mask off to talk it was like someone punched me inside my head with electricity that i could smell!!! That formic acid shit is pure poison man. Ill continue with the experiment tomorrow but wowzers that formic acid needs a massive health warning.
😂 I know, the smell is punchy! I did GCSE chem, but that was a long time ago. I am painting by numbers man.
Well let me say two things... First you absolutely rock my man! Total dude, super freaking class, legendish status all round bike geezer. Second.... I used frikkin copper powder instead of copper oxide powder like a dick! Now I've got to throw another layer on and hope for the best 🤣 Righto - if you are ever touring through Holland or nearby the Groene Hart of Holland let me know, you n your firm can camp in our garden n eat for free! Take care Mark
@@markbowden1976 I did Calais to the Hook 15 years ago. Belgium and Holland were amazing (Calais not so much!). I'm keeping my tours Nordic for a while but thanks very much. Good luck with the coating. and Cheers.
Superb! I chopped down a standard aluminium rack to save weight for a bike packing rack bag. I love it but your carbon version is next level!
Honestly, you'd better to have sources for your claim that "probably" all titanium bikes from Europe are made in the same factory. In any case, I'll most likely order mine from Passioni. At least, just in case, they make titanium frames themselves in Italy.
ruclips.net/video/WMxBaq13UO4/видео.htmlsi=1eP_pG-BS1DhBO42&t=282 , this is Joe from china cycling strongly hinting that they make a handful of other brands in the same factory. If you can afford a hand made EU or US version, I say go for it. Waltly offer an outsourced alternative and I have nothing but praise for the process. As for sources, this is RUclips, not the BBC dear.
wow, cool idea!
Is this copper sulfate?
@@zngrrr it's copper oxide, although I've heard sulphate would work.
It is working but i dont know if it's better... Do you make it with the same amounts last time?
The copper oxide in the video
@@zngrrr I presume so. As you can see from my explanation in the video. I am relying heavily on other people's expertise. I've heard that oiling it quickly after stops the reaction, which might stop the poweriness.
@@SladeTakalaLamey thank you and last question how do oyu get the green color?
Loved nice and simple design. Thank you.
i bought a german made premium product and its just fine though. As someone who works in manufacturing diy is more or less my last option because i dont live in the lie that diy is cheaper or better for what i can realistically do.
@@TommiHonkonen 2 out of 3 ain't bad for some. DIY is always more interesting tho.
Good looking bike. What tires were you using on icy snowy weather
@@onlywalt thanks very much. They are Suomi 29" 50. There's a full spec sheet under my Titanium bike build video. ruclips.net/video/NO9SPNU1_YY/видео.htmlsi=rkITBbqNTK1NYBQA
I watched the video perhaps my 10th time. I am so exited to give it a go myself !! would it be possible to get an update on the bike ? would love to see how green it became in the last 2 years
@@LioLionsen I am afraid to deflate your dreams but I must. The copper was atomically thin, the rust took over before the green could, so I had to clear-coat her. Laura gave up too. So while it's a cool experiment, it's more athletic than hard wearing.
Carbon rods ordered!! 😊 I’m hopefully gonna make it compatible with ortlieb panniers, 🤞
@@matthewsouthall1286 best of luck. Please let me know how it goes and send pics when you are done.
Will do
Also ordered some rods and want to try to put them together with 3D-printed Nylon Sleeves. Those have still to be designed and I hope it will work as imagined.
@@kneeslidergurkeI definitely considered that option. Ended up playing to my strengths and went lo-fi. Please send me pics when you are done, I'm trying to build a collection of people I've inspired.
Finished it last week, sent the pictures through to your instagram. 😊 but you haven't seen it. You want me to sent them through on something else??
The aero bars 😂😂😂
@@Gang1955 I've since solved that problem. The double stem was very much a place holder. Look further up the feed. It's quite elegant if I say so myself.
Very smart and good looking build. Love the frameset as well. The toptube slope and everything about this book just looks correct. Brushed ti frames also look so much better than bead blasted.
This video is such a good find! I have just built up a quirky bike myself, in SS format. When you had to walk your bike home because the loose handle bars, I thought, who doesn't take a multi tool out on a shakedown ride. I did exactly that yesterday hahaha! Glad everything stayed tight for me. Congrats, great bike. It would be helpful if you could share the price of the frame at least, I think a lot of viewers would find that useful.
@@theparkup-w9mthanks very much for saying. By popular demand there's a Google doc in the description, it has all the info you are looking for. Happy trails, ☺️
@@SladeTakalaLamey Perfect! I am considering building one now. TY 🙌
I just saw this after spending all morning looking at bikepacking frames... new OCD obsession unlocked. Now I get to figure out how to do something like this on my Lauf Seigla
@@Insert_Screename_Here there's a detailed version further up the feed if you like.
@@SladeTakalaLamey I saw a couple of the videos so far, really like it. Only question I had, is why not thread through crossbars, instead of gluing?
@@Insert_Screename_Here I got drunk on weight savings. The cross bars all fell off. But it turns out they made no difference to the structure of the thing anyway.
@@SladeTakalaLamey Not going to lie, every since I saw the video and the setup, and I wondering how I can implement this on my bike now 😁I don't having mounting points on my chain stays, so for sure it will be something that I have to consider. Maybe some sort of shock absorbing end, with a rubber strap that wraps around the stay and can be tightened down.
@@Insert_Screename_Here the Rockbros fender mounts look like they could hold a pipe.
Looks really fun! Kudos to you for having so much energy to film the whole journey!
@@ThyLegend27 I made a follow up this year. (It's further up the pile). The race keeps getting better!

Copper sulphate works well too.
@@Clim-lk6tn I've not heard of that stuff since growing crystals from my 80s chemistry set. I suppose it would.
you and some of your mannerisms are so so much like Iains. 🙏
I have 2 waltlys. A gravel bike in 2017 and a 29er in 2021. So far so good! Much better process than buying a moots by far. I hated buying my moots.
@@nicstinson7948 I think we live in different tax brackets ☺️. Congratulations, I hope they serve you well. I'm still loving mine.
What didn't you like about moots? I woulda thought it'd be a dream buying process (just super expensive).
Moots are the most overrated and overpriced ti frames on the planet. Have no idea what people see in them as being so special. They are generic ti frames that do not ride any better than two dozen plus other frames, they nickel and dime you on everything under the sun above their base frameset, and their finishes are the very cheapest that can be fabbed (bead blasted) unless you pay some crazy upgrade price for cerakote, etc..... I'd take a brushed Walty 7 days a week over a Moots.
Robert is a great asset, his channel goes back deep in time and on absolutely amazing knowledge on chemistry ♥️ btw I reckon he and Tom Nichols have the exact same voice modulation, after a while it's uncanny really
@@carlospinheirotorres9499 he makes me feel quite dense.
Thanks for the inspiration and links to parts. Have to say drilling holes in carbon did not worked smoothly so used round file which in my case worked so much better and I could really fine tune the angles (not that it worked as planed though). Also at some point (when i get new ones) will have to drill bolt eyelets at some angle to have less tension on the construction. Or maybe for the next rack I'll cut tube at the angle...(did not do it this time). Since I wanted to have weight to be as low as possible went with factory rack mounts on seatstays on my Kynesis, which alas were in my opinion poorly placed and interfered witch rack construction, so had to bend bolts to make it work, which ain't perfect and still working on my metal workmanship skills...anyhow. I see the light at the end of the tunnel. The rack did not fall apart on the first ride (no load) but poor gravel roads so now on final stretch to get rid of small bugs and then figuring out the bag for this rack. Thanks again for great video and inspiration.
@@cincas I've now taken mine on an 800k loaded ride so I'm confident it won't fall apart. The cross braces fell off, but it didn't affect the strength or stability so I think they may be superfluous.
@@SladeTakalaLamey well, now that i think I should have spent more time sanding the joining surfaces. The time will tell :) Will put mine at the end of the week with some load on top and will let you know how it went.
@@cincas good luck. Please can you send me some pics. 🙂
@@SladeTakalaLamey I will. Got some ideas how to solve some issues that came up, so will send with comments as well.
Love it but the audio to music balance is way off
Thanks for the video! Any reason you decided not to go with the yoke as shown on the drawings?
@@noodlestv522 I don't need that much clearance, I thought it was ugly and presumed it was weaker. The clearance is massive anyway. My studded 50s have a lot of space around them so I may go bigger on the next winter set.
Cool info cheers
This is great! Just built up a vintage frame, and I can't find a pannier that fits the bill. May just be a mish mash of parts and some inspo from this, making use of the carbon rods
@@CemlynGriffiths that's brilliant. My last bike was a recycle centre build, so I feel your pain. Good luck! Please send me a pic. I'm trying to convince everyone to send me their efforts for a follow up film.

@@CemlynGriffiths amazing. Good luck!! 🍀
what lazer cutter do you have and if old, do you still recommend it, if not - what would u recommend now just for a hobbyest (i.e. not a pro). I currently do more than id like with a 3d printer and reallly want to move away from plastic when i can. But also coz of the lamination its limited when strength/durability is a requirement.
@@traderz13 I use the Longer 10w. I can neither endorse or indict it. It works fine for me, but I'm not an expert with the Lazer, I watched a few reviews and based it mainly on price. You mentioned about cars coming close - was that on the route or coz of your diversion. Is the ride in many dangerous (traffic) roads? Is it all wild camping, could u have been in campsites or other accommodation on the route? Looks amazing, well done. Did all the myogs hold up?
@@traderz13 The only bit I was a bit nervous on was when the lorry went past. Some roads are unavoidable, but generally Finland is pretty good for cycle paths and infrastructure. The route is more than 50% gravel and there's lots of 'middle of nowhere' stuff.
@@traderz13 I chose wild camping, but there's lots of camp sites along the route, some people do it in hotels and air BnB's. And nobody will spray water at you in Finland. 😏
