Learn 11 Pull-Up Scales to Coach in Your Next CrossFit Class
Pull-ups are one of the most frequently programmed movements in CrossFit classes. They are ideal movements for building upper-body strength and capacity in high-intensity workouts. Pull-ups are infinitely scalable and accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
In this video, Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach Eric O’Connor demonstrates 11 scales for the pull-up you can coach your clients to perform the next time they’re programmed. These are also great movements to share with athletes who want to work on skills outside of class.
Pull-up scales demonstrated in this video include:
Banded pull-down
Ring row
Inverted bar row
Seated pike pull-up
Leg-assisted pull-up

I have to say, I'm really disappointed in this. I mean Maggie is L-4 and I'm a lowly L-2 AND Diane was critiquing BUT, I din't like the positioning of several of these athletes--and these are coaches--the whole time, particularly at set up. Some of these athletes had really high hips/butts, all the time in set up with little to no knee bend, and especially with the return queueing back down. She specifically said hips higher than the original set up, huh? Why?--most of which were too high hipped to begin with. There should be a discernible bend in the knees at the bottom of a deadlift, which puts them slightly in front of the bar, with bar touching the shins, always! And, there was never the classic queue of--"hips and shoulders rising in unison off the floor till you clear the knee". That says and does everything for the liftoff/first pull. I much prefer, and always use, the Mark Ripatoe (sp) method of teaching the DL position by using the BB with plates (light - 10s) to position the bar at the right height. No guessing, "mid shin". One less thing to correct. Then--"everyone stand shins 1" from the bar and put your hands on your knees, elbows locked out, as if you were trying to catch your breath from a killer WOD". This sets everyones hip/back angle based on their anatomy, maybe with minor teak. Then, "to reach the bar with your hands, you just and ONLY bend your knees" WITHOUT changing, the just established hip/back angle. Shins are now in contact with the bar. Then, the first "pull" is a push with the legs whereby you take out that bend in the knees, only; hips/shoulders rising in unison, till the bar clears the knee, then stand up. I tell my athletes on liftoff to watch their knees go back and their shins go vertical (demo this several x) with this first movement, creating the clear vertical path for the bar going up and there's rarely the stripper first pull and if there is, its much easier to correct. I know some of you out here have to have had the same thoughts. Peace. Out!

Hi @billohlsen6958 Thank you for carefully reviewing this video. One of the main goals of this channel is to learn from others and remain open to feedback, so we truly value your input-you raised some great points! For quick context, this was an educational skill session and not an exact display of an affiliate class session. Meaning, sometimes during these sessions, we guide a coach to focus on something in particular, which may be why some of the points that would normally be addressed weren't. Here are a few thoughts: Great observation about some hip positions being slightly high in certain set-up positions. While this wasn’t consistent across the group, there are instances where adjustments could have been made. You clearly understand the points of performance (POPs) of the deadlift. Teaching athletes to "push your knees back as you lift the bar" is a clear and actionable cue that encourages the hips and shoulders to rise together without explicitly stating the POP. Teaching with a barbell and plates is a solid approach to getting athletes moving. However, the PVC also has advantages-it allows for more reps without grip or back fatigue interfering with focus and execution. Additionally, the PVC made it easier to maximize space with the number of athletes being coached. Both methods have their merits and can be effective depending on the context. Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback!

What do you feel is the best frequency of coach meetings? When we do them, we always do an L-2 style presentation of a movement as to a class, someone else creates a the WOD and another does the warmup.

Hi Bill! Right now, at CrossFit Roots, we meet every other week. This works well for us. One meeting each month focuses on coach development, and the other is more administrative and general upkeep of processes and the gym. I sometimes wish we met every week, but there are weeks when we're just humming and don't need an extra point of contact as we are coaching together, watching classes, taking classes, and having small touch bases all the time to get things done. Anything less than twice monthly seems too infrequent to keep the momentum. So, a minimum of twice per month feels like the best baseline frequency to me! Thanks for joining in yesterday!

Good question, Bull! We follow the same schedule Nicole mentioned. Our ongoing scheduled meetings mate on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month. However, it can be tough to get ALL staff members together at the same time. I try to make sure one of the meetings each month is at an accommodating day/time for as many of our coaches as possible, which sometimes causes us to pick a different day/time.

Bill Ohlsen here, owner of CrossFit Wynwood in Miami. I use 1:15 time blocks creating a 15 min. buffer so people DO get to chat with each other and time to put away equipment and tidy up. The class is still 1 hr. but that :15 mins has really created a great time for people coming in and those that just finished to talk about the WOD or their life or whatever.

It would be good if CrossFit started posting videos teaching movements to beginners, overweight and other people with special needs. I have been coaching for roughly 10 years and none of those guys in the video look like people in any of the boxes that I have coached. While the video is good, I find novice coaches could not make much use of the info. CrossFit please wake up and start putting out content that helps most and not just a few

Love the cues! How would an average joe, never touched a barbell, or even been in a gym take this? What would you tell someone who tends to shot the hips up AND THEN open the hips? Basically turning the deadlift into a two part movement i.e. straight leg deadlift into a good morning? TIAs!

    • @CrossFitTraining
      @CrossFitTraining 20 дней назад

One thing you can try is to break the movement down into two parts: a pull to the knee, allowing the shoulders and hips to rise at the same rate, then open the hips to full standing. This tends to eliminate the fault that you are seeing.

Such good content and a boss coach, so many little gold nuggets for new coaches. I love how James coaches rather than just facilitating the workout of the day. He creates good relationships or maintains them such that he can modify the workout and have it scaled inside the intensity piece. This is evident at 41:35 “we will do a shorter round here we are going to do 20 sit ups to get you back to those push ups, if these go quick we will add reps next round.” The WOD is just a medium to facilitate a physiological change, a sense of achievement, a specific movement understanding in the athlete. Change it to prioritise the why rather than just stumbling through the what. Good job sir.
