The 4 C’s and the process of achieving YOUR Optimal Performance!
Funny thing with me is, I’m a southpaw and have shot rifles and shotguns using my left eye my whole life. I only started training and practicing pistol seriously when I decided to EDC about 3 years ago. Around my 3rd class when I started using an optic, my instructor was watching the line and he came up to me and said, “You!re cross eye dominant huh?” I had no idea what he was talking about. I was just presenting my pistol how it felt natural. Then he had me do the make a small triangle with your hands, look at a target and bring it back to my eye test. Sure enough, with pistol I use my right eye! Weird. But I had no problem adjusting. It just feels natural when I present. So I use left eye with rifle and right eye for pistol. Weird.

@@georgelopez16 Gracias!! 💪🏼🙏🏼🤙🏼
I've never really understood why people ever have a problem with this with regard to pistols. I know it's different with red dots, but I've always just naturally lined the pistol up with my dominant eye without even thinking about it. This southpaw idea is pretty genius as far as preventing the head drifting or arms to one side or the other. I've only owned pistols so far, and I'm more concerned about this with rifles. I've never shot a rifle before, and I'm not sure if it's going to be a problem for me being right handed and left eye dominant.
@@NikoBased glad to hear it resonated with you. The biggest difference with this between irons and the dot is the fact that we have two points of reference to line up, on the gun, the front and rear sight, which makes it much easier to make the micro adjustments needed to line things up, rather than just one point of reference, being the dot. For rifle, I think the sighting system and the fact that you have a cheek weld on the stock makes a huge difference and mitigates (while not completely eliminating) cross eye dominance issues.
@@fortitudeconsulting Thanks for the reply. Do you see any problem with closing my dominant eye for the period while raising the rifle? I don't do this with pistol, but I've tried it just to see if it works, and it seems to work. If I close my left eye while raising the pistol, it doesn't take any longer to acquire a good sight, it just makes sure I don't sight with my left eye. I don't know what the drawbacks of this would be though.
@@NikoBased that is a VERY interesting question and something I’ve never pondered before. I’m out of town teaching right now. Lemme get back into town and give that some work with a carbine and get back to you with my thoughts. I’m genuinely curious if there are in fact any drawbacks to it with the boomstick.

@@Platoon_Guide priorities change brother. I feel the same way myself, not just from the firearms side but from the perspective of empty handed skills. Well, my current grip has been a 50-year habit, but this video is compelling enough that I'm going to try moving to this style. Thanks for the great video!
That’s awesome! Having an open mind and trying new things is certainly the path to finding a new level of performance. 💪🏼 Please let us know how it works out for you. 🙏🏼
Think for the majority of shooters, i can agree with this concept. Maybe there's info I'm missing from where it cuts out but depending on the shooter, this may not be so simple. For instance, cross eye dominance changes how a person draw/presents the gun. In general, these terms are accurate but as performance is being demanded, the draw AND the presentation have to make sense for the user at the time where effective use is being demanded. Folks that are right eye+hand have lil bit more they can get away with as opposed to folks like myself who are right hand/left eye. Esp as we push effecient movements, things blend together.
When there are cross eye dominance issues present, it’s even MORE important to isolate the presentation and get that hammered out before adding the draw to things. Have you checked out the cross eye dominance solutions video yet? If not, I’d highly recommend it. All three strategies are related to the presentation of the gun, not the draw. Typically the draw should be consistent across the board for all shooters.
Billy Corgan?
😆 I’ll take it. I’ve been known to smash a few pumpkins in sparring a time or two. 🥋🥊
@@fortitudeconsulting 👌🏽 Be good!
I initially thought; I did not like your LABORING on word definitions, but I do give a guy the chance deliver his presentation. Genius ! The word “pinch” is the very best described express. My suggestion is to introduce the “right off the bat” then go to the explanation of word choice. Come back to emphasis “pinch” as the better descriptive word - but that’s my pedantic opinion. Great explanation!
Glad to hear you kept an open mind and dug the concept. I appreciate the inclination of a pedantic analysis. I actually prefer to explore the minutia of all things training related, so this resonates well with me. 🤙🏼

Man ohhh man. This makes sooo much sense. I tried this today and it was the most comfortable and sustainable. AWESOME!!!!
Outstanding!! Glad to hear it worked for you. Thanks for letting us know. 🙏🏼
Best way to learn to grip a handgun. Is spend time on the range making small changes til you find what works for you.
Indeed, the details matter, so does putting the work in with live fire. It also helps to have an idea of where you want to go with things are HOW to work on them, before you get to the range. Always plan out the training session, you’ll get a lot more out of the training if you do. 💪🏼
If both eyes are open and your positioned in a isosceles stance, does it still make a difference?
If the goal is bringing the sight over to the dominant eye, which it should be, then yes it absolutely would matter. In most instances.
I know I'm late to the party but I enjoy your style of instruction. Thank you very much. I am a new shooter and trying to learn all that I can
Outstanding! Glad to have you come on board to the community and doing it the right way, by seeking training opportunities. Stay safe!
Good explain, gotta try this next monday
Excellent video. I keep coming back and watching over and over again. My question is are we applying pinky pressure first? Or applying the rotated mcp pressure first?
Very good question. 👌🏼 The answer is the rotated pressure is how the pinky pressure gets applied organically. This way we don’t have to “think” about hitting pinky pressure at all, it is a by product of properly positioning of the hand and the pressures being applied. ✊🏼 #gripisking
@@fortitudeconsulting thanks for the reply 🫡 I recall you mentioned that in the video so I will be watching again and will keep practicing Appreciate your time !
Hey Gil, sorry to keep coming back. I’m months and months in working on my grip trying to get it dialed in consistent and able to fire multiple strings. My question in regards to support index finger, are you indexing your strong hand index finger, or more towards the front of the trigger guard? I’m finding it difficult to get the leverage on my support hand when its index finger on top of index finger. But I believe I have the leverage and pressure by moving my support index finger slightly forward underneath the trigger guard (half way up near double undercut on a Glock) Would love to hear your thoughts if you have time.
Hell yeah man. Glock 45?
If I recall correctly, this particular run was with a P320. One of the last times I ran that pistol. The G45 is currently in the rotation though. Been pretty happy with that one so far.

Very interesting. Excellent point. Words matter.
💪🏼👊🏼🤙🏼
You're not usage the word exacerbates correctly.
Well, I’ve never made a claim of being an English professor. 🤷🏻♂️ Your observation is duly noted. 🤙🏼
that method doesnt work for me. that methods was invented by dr. middlebrooks on his fist fire method of shooting, but still it doesnt work for me as to shoot instinctively...., the method that is working for me is the erik graffels method...
While the principle behind his system is very similar to what I describe in the video, the manner in which we apply technique has subtle, but important differences. One of the major differences would be the idea of having a “thumbs forward” grip. That’s something that should generally be avoided, as it will typically result in locking the shooters elbows, which is very inefficient for the application of friction and leverage.
This is good. I want some.
Hell yeah, get some!! 💪🏼👊🏼🤙🏼
Nicely done…
👊🏼🙏🏼🤙🏼
Thanks man. Was just at range yesterday with my first red dot being cross eyed dom and I was all screwed up!
There is a whole new world of performance available to you, stay the course! It will be well worth it. 💪🏼
I notice your grip is a lot longer than the grip on my pistol. Theres room for your support hand pinky to have its own real estate down there, on mine it’s on top of my strong hand pinky. Still works, I think just not as well. After watching this , I’m going to focus on getting my support hand drumstick up higher to start with, hoping that raises where the support hand pinky lands down the bottom.
Actually, what you articulated is spot on. The support side pinky, which is where the pressure comes from, CAN in fact still apply the correct pressures with it on top of the dominant side pinky. As long as we are keeping loose pressure on the dominant side, that pressure from the support side hand/pinky will transfer right into the frame of the firearm, as indented. Getting that good pinky pressure is also a by product of getting the drumstick higher up on the gun. When we rotate to get it higher, that support side pinky pressure occurs organically. Your understanding of what you need here is very strong! 💪🏼
@@fortitudeconsulting thank you for the quick reply. I was just upstairs practicing it to see if I could feel the difference. I’ve been working with the wave grip concept for a good while, I don’t think I was nailing it so to speak until I saw your video though. Scott always said “pinky pressure and the dot will drop in from 12:00 o’clock I was applying pinky pressure with the wrong hand though. I don’t think I was getting the drumstick up high enough. I was more just putting it in that empty real estate on my left grip, rather than purposely rolling it forward to the point where I got the pinky pressure out of the pinky on the same hand, it was in the ballpark- but not fully doing its job. I’m going to work with it dry fire for a couple days, and then try it at the range. I appreciate your time and content here, that view from the bottom of your grip you gave, really helped it click for me. The instructor I attend is also a wave grip guy. In fact when I started really looking for professional instruction- I had already watched most of Scott’s content (as much as I could find anyway), and this instructor out of New York visits cape cod once or twice a month at the range I go to- when I first was reading his bio, as soon as I saw Modern Samurai in there I knew I wanted to learn from him. I also obviously know you’re one of Scott’s lead guys. You explained in a way that really helped me tonight so thank you. If you ever come to Massachusetts I will be attending if at all possible on my end. Chris
