I test the Adaptalux lighting system
I evaluate a macro lighting kit from ADAPTALUX, both in the macro studio and in the field, for photo and video
I tested the lighting system including the Pod 3.0 and two white light arms for focus stacking, single shots of ants in my garden, and butterfly images in the field. I also captured macrovideo of ants and butterflies, with success using the system

I brought the IRIX 150mm macro lens to the Galapagos
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Год назад
I went on a 3-weeks mission to the Galapagos and had to decide which lenses to bring. Besides the obvious zooms and long lenses, I had to bring a macro lens for both photo and video and decided to take along the IRIX 150m macro. And it turned out to be a swiss knife of photo and video, used in many different situations, and incredibly versatile. Here is the story with some of the resulting images

Ephippiger (bush crickets) are very common on the French Riviera and often can be found mating on low grass. Once the spermatophore (package of sperm) has been transferred by the male, the female carries it for a while then consumes it, presumably for energy prior to laying her eggs The female is recognizable at its long saber-shaped oviscapt used for laying eggs

MACROVIDEO - Wolf spider eyes under UV light
Well said. i even ordered a ULANZI light, because sometimes i found the torches i carry too cumbersome.
Good for you. Lots of options these days with small LED lights. Indeed I really like the Ulanzi, they are always in my bag for this kind of photoshoot
Wow... amazing scope, i can see the quality from the cheetah image
J'espère que tu nous montreras comment tu focus stack avec le rail.
Oui, deja fait une video sur le stacking mais on reparlera des rails manuels, en particulier de celui-ci (SWEBO), et d'autres sujets autour du stacking
plis qu'a faire du stack in UV by night en Guyane !
On part quand ??? 🙂
I have the system and have buyers remorse. Not bright enough, the diffusers attach by weak magnets. The central hub flops around and is too cumbersome for field work. The one thing I can or should be able to use it for is UV macro but they always seem sold out.
Thanks. Yes the magnet diffusers could be a little stronger (if possible at all due to limited contact surface) but they never fell off during my tests unless I bounced them against something. Fair point. Re. brighness, indeed not so strong as I explain but I believe it is a tradeoff between lighting power, and (in my opinion) portability, and flexibility. I found the Pod OK, and to me it's not so big (even when placed on the camera flash shoe), no issues with "floppiness" as long as the 1/4" attachment was properly tightened. Have not had a chance to test the UV arms, can't comment on that
Forget the UV arms they are too weak for UV macro photography, use the money for something better. I can confirm all your critic points. The idea of the whole system is great but the realization disappointing.
@@drollo397 I think there is more potential for field use than generally expected, so stay tuned, I'll be testing this in another video with different subjects, probe lens etc.
Thank you for the review. I have the system which looks at a first glance really forthcoming. On the downsides, it is highly expensive for the poor amount of light, to add the costs for shipping and customs, the arms are flexible but rarely keep the position, the UV arms are worth nothing. In a nutshell there are many small LED panels available which do better for less money.
Thank you. Regarding pricing I can't comment on that, not my business and I have no financial interest in the company. I have seen the critics about the arms being too springy but I have not felt it was an issue in the setups you can see in the video. Yes, not as powerful as other LED panels (which I discuss) but I believe it is a tradeoff between lighting power, and (in my opinion) portability, and flexibility. I use LED panels in the field but they're heavier, take longer to set up on magic arms etc. As I said in my conclusion it will depend on your use. For the time being and with my own field experience I found the kit useful, though I plan to acquire at least another arm
Thx your sharing. The tips are absolutely amazing and useful!
Great tips and gorgeous photos!
Excellent walk through with a number of well explained logical steps. Thanks for putting this together.
Glad you liked it, thks for the kind words
Well, can the lights be put into different groups with the controller?
@williamgollatz1911 yes, as with every controller a number of flash units can be assigned to any of the groups. So you could have 6 or 8 flashes and control them in different groups (can't remember how many groups the Godox XT1 can handle. 3 or 4 ?)
Do you have a how to video for the plate stand you made
No I don't. It was a prototype and actually not good enough to make a video about it. I am thinking of ways to improve it, especially the feet It is based on a carpentry connector plate and nuts/bolts Same as a Platypod but costing 50 times less
What is that device on top of your camera?
It's a small field monitor (for video). I use the Portkeys PT6 but any 5" or 5.5" from Neewer, or other brands is OK. Helps a lot with focus
Thanks for a fantastic review with plenty of good insight
@@NiSE_Rafter this for the kind words, they make the effort worthwhile
Loved the orange vest tip 👍🏻🤣
Life saving ! (Literally speaking 😉 )
Very good and thorough review 👍🏻
Thank you. Great piece of gear, I'm currently in Borneo with it
I think it's 2 dimensional the crop factor on D800 etc leaves you with around 16m pix not 24. but still excellent (crop factor squared) 36mp/(1.5x1.5)? Great advice, thank you
Yes you are right probably around 40% so ca. 15MPx. My mistake. Glad you liked the video
🙏 Thank you ! 🙏
What F stop were you shooting at ?
Hi ! Not sure but usually f8 or f11 to avoid strong diffraction and get best sharpness. f11 on this lens is a good starting point
Again a super explanation...😊
A genius explanation.. especially flash settings, as I have all the equipment, but needed the free hand setup...😊
Thank you ! I will film more tutorials on stacking in 2024
Great review. I don't think I'd be happy with a battery that can't be swapped out. Love my AD200's and AD400's; the spares for them are pricey, but having at least one in my bag is reassuring. Really wonderful review, the first of yours I've watched. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for the kind comments. Yes I agree, being a fan of full-night rainforest macro outings, flashes operating on AA batteries (or swappable Li-IONs) are better suited to long shoots but recycling time is slower generally with AAs. Could not really test that situation since I had to return the unit. More reviews are coming (slowly) !
Excellent video! Thank you 📷 🙂
16:52 amazing...
Thank you
You're living in heaven. Nice video and thanks for tips.🥰
Yes the French Riviera is great for macro. Great biodiversity
Great review. Comprehensive, clear and very informative!
thank you !
Thank you for your videos. They are both informative and beautifully produced. Félicitations!
Thks a lot ! More will come in 2024
Not again 🥱🥱🥱
With the landscape you have at hand I would not have the time to watch this video ;O)
When I saw your video title I thought you were going to be talking about Ghost mushrooms 😂
Nope, artificail light only. We don't have those where I live unfortunately
spectacular!!!
I love the idea of getting there before the sun comes up! We have laws in my area that say we can not enter the local parks, lakes, ponds & preserves until an hour AFTER the sun rises - we miss so much beauty!!
Yes it is always best since at sunrise light is often spectacular and dew can be abundant with insects totally still .And the stillness of the air is something fantastic too ! I love those moments
Great tutorial - with some very useful tips in a nice laid back style - I have been photographing butterflies for a couple of years now using a Fuji x-S10 with XF 100-400 lens and 1.4x teleconverter and cannot wait to get back out next spring to get some shots of insects in flight.
Thank you ! and yes we're all waitring for spring now. I myself plan to try out the Nikon 180-600 for those shots in 2024. Stay tuned...
Amazing review, man! I have the Laowa 24mm probe but thinking of going for the freshly released Astrhori 28mm f13 90 degree + direct view combo and sell my Laowa, despite having a slight advantage in sharpness and picture quality from reviews I've seen. Subscribed! Next time upload the video in 4K ;)
Thks a lot ! I have not used the Laowa but this AstrHori model has far exceeded my expectations in terms of sharpness and ergonomy. I think it is also a matter of best focus practice as I explain. And yes I'll try to go up to 1440 in upcoming videos, 4K might be a bit too heavy
@@rivieramacro5240 You can export them in 4K just for youtube.Even if you shoot in 1080p. 1080p isn't bad and looks brilliant in 4K but youtube destroys videos so it's better upload them in 4K to reserve the most out of them.
fantastic informative vid, thanks so much!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Enfin... je l attendais cette revue!
4 mois de tests terrain... SI tu as des questions on en parlera a Montier
Look great man!!! Thanks for the review. If you could in the future upload more videos in 4k. Those images Look great!
thks. 4K video are too heavy, but the filming is done in 4K and downsampled to Full HD for better quality, better than FHD direct
Super interesting. Were the led lights enough illumination?
yes they did for video, and sometimes to lift the shadows in photo too. Plenty of light. The only thing is that they give an ugly reflection ring on shiny subjects or in eyes. Best used for non-reflective subjects, but very useful
Interesting - what would the results be with a MFT camera?
Likely the same in terms of optical quality, Since the sensor size would be smaller than APS-C no problem using this lens I believe. Not sure whether it is offered in M4/3 mount, check the web site
@@rivieramacro5240 :: there are adapters - when I save up some money, i will will try it. Thank you for the comprehensive video and sharing your beautiful images!! Very inspiring!!
Your explanation with demonstration is excellent. You have mentioned teleconverter Nikon TC 1.7X III but I could find only NikonTC 1.7x 11 only I have Nikkor 70-300 AF-P lens Please suggest which teleconverter is suitable.
Thank you. Sorry my mistake the TC is 1.7 II, I think only the TC 1.4 was offered in the 1.4 III version. Beware that adding TCs results in some loss of sharpness and therefore IQ degradation maybe even worse with a zoom lens
21:16 It's good for non-Chinese subjects...
Brilliant content, I the uk there are great places for butterflies but you really have to search them out. I have just got a 300m f 2.8 Nikon lens and its proving to be handfull, but it so very very sharp even with a 2x TC . I'll getting 300mm f4 Fresnel lens next.
Thank you. With the f/2.8 I doubt that you need the 300mm f/4 PF although it is probably much lighter and has great native magnification for proxiphoto (see my other video about it). I will never part with it, though I'm swtching most of my lenses to the Z line now. Such a fab lens !
Do you shoot at RAW?!
yes always ! More latitude in post-treatment, for the best final result
Gold!!!
Hello, what iso are you using with the 300mm, extension ring, and x1.7, pretty high I guess?
I have a question. You mentioned you pair the 300mm lens with an extension ring. Is this extension ring a teleconverter or is it more like an extension tube without glass?
Hi ! I used an extension ring, not a Teleconverter. the effect of an extension ring is to increase magnification at a given focal length. That way I can get the subject larger in the frame. The TC will increase the focal length therefoee you can be further away from the subject, and it will also increase magnification. But there will be a significant loss in image sharpness (though recent TCs appear to have dramatically improved). Adding an extension ring is a cheap way to get more of your long lens for proxiphoto
I really loved watching this video. May have to rewatch for the lighting tips. Light is my biggest problem in photography. Glad I found you on youtube. I really enjoy macro photography. I'm from the US.
Glad it's useful, this is why these videos are made. I also have a couple others on field lighting with reflectors, etc. Enjoy and don't hesitate to ask for specific topics, all ideas welcome
That is butterfly heaven 😍
it is indeed though this year there were less probably due to super-dry eather in july
All I see is a bad edition in the eyes. There are no pictures with the UV reaction and beware because UV flashlight 295nm with 10w is enough to kill a small spider in less than 8 seconds with half inch of distance.
