Is this really the WORST beach in Vancouver?
I finally decided to check out the small beach attached to a park that I had been avoiding for years due to its reputation.
Tucked away between the Vancouver Port Authority, The Railyards and Canada Place, the unique and isolated CRAB park in the Downtown Eastside has a checkered and problematic past; until very recently it was home to a large encampment and site of numerous police incidents and dangerous situations. I actually live just a few blocks from here but had never seen it with my own eyes, I finally walked over to see it for myself and found it quite interesting.

Vancouver has been swarmed by Swifties this weekend, so I decided to walk around BC Place Stadium the morning after the first Taylor Swift Show and see what they dropped. I'd been out by the stadium the the night before to listen to the show from outside and got the idea that I should do some treasure hunting after the crowds had left. You should have called ICE on that dude jk lol. That was weird Nice hunt
I just watched the Crab Park video, whats with all these floppy disks. lol
Can't tell if they were dropped recently or not, certainly don't see those around very much these days!
I drove by a couple of times a few years ago. It was pretty messy then. I never got the detector out 😊. Fun hunt! Thanks for bringing us along.
Yeah I'm happy to see that they've really cleaned it up, it's a very nice little nook now.
Hi Joe , The brass thing you said looked like a dog bone is a "webbing belt keeper" old school type army/navy issue. Cheers Mate👍👍👍😎💨🏴☠☮☮☕☕☯☯
Oh wow that's amazing, that's exactly what it is!! I'm a little embarrassed I called it a dog bone cookie cutter now lol.
Who was out there with the 3 and a half inch floppies
Haha I have no theories, very odd.
We used to have a sulphur pile in town too, but the place closed down years ago, I guess they put them on the water for shipping
Yeah I've always wanted to go see it up close, they filmed an episode of Stargate SG-1 there!
Is this close to coal harbor area?
It's about 1km from the Easternmost edge of Coal Harbour.
@ the view looked familiar from last time we were in town. Walking down in the area.
Ya never know what you will find! Half the fun is getting home and figuring out what things are.
It definitely is! My favourite part is laying everything out afterwards and thinking about how it all used to be buried.
That Arrow on it says it is British Navy.
That's amazing, thanks for the info!
It's a boatswain's (bosuns) pipe
Thanks!
Great video thanks for posting. Very cool whistle. Items like that are my favorite thing to uncover.
Thanks! Definitely one of my most unique finds! Wish I realized how neat it was when I found it, I was just confused haha.
That's called a boatswain's call/pipe and they are still in use aboard Navy ships today.
I'm ashamed that I initially called it a Yerba maté straw... lol
The mintage for the 1964 penny is 484 million, where as 1963 is only 279 million and the number goes lower every year you go back with a sharp drop off at 1961 at like 100 million, and wvery year before 1961 less then 100 million
Ah well that explains why all the Young Liz pennies I find are from 64 haha.
Lost and found guy, that's a new one
Haha, happens often when I'm on the beach at night, especially after the summer fireworks.
That odd looking thing is a " BOATSWAINS " whistle and quite possible silver, Cheers . Very not everyone carries one of those around , unusual find .The inverted arrow is Australian Military/Government.,
I just bought a Aztec Death whistle, it's a bit fun, I want to scare my mom's dog with it, I blew a normal whistle near the dog and she ran away, the death whistle will probably freak her out
I'll have to learn how to play it properly, this is one of my coolest relics now.
What does it sound like?
@@ScoopyJoe the death whistle? It's supposed to sound like someone screaming, I've only blown it once so far and my friend said I'm not allowed to use it again in her apartment lol I'm going home today and will play with it a bit, there's prank videos on RUclips of people hiding in trees in the dark and blowing it when people walk by
What kind of detector are you using?
I'm using a Minelab Manticore. Thanks for watching!
Hey Joe! Thanks for responding! Have you ever used a Garrett AT MAX International? I'm thinking of buying that one... but I'm not sure how it would do on our beaches here in vancouver. Or should i spend more on one like yours?Curious on your thoughts!? Thanks again!
I would highly recommend that you avoid Garrett for anything other than pinpointers, and in general avoid single frequency detectors for our highly mineralized beaches. Their technology has not kept up with competitors and their pricing is way out of spec for what they offer. For a comparable price to that Garrett you're looking at, you could get the Minelab Equinox 700 and have MUCH better performance, or spend a bit more and get the 900 to have the dedicated gold mode and a few more adjustable settings as an option. I started with the Equinox 600 in 2019 and loved it, so I'm a big fan of anything in the Equinox line as an entry point. I've also heard good things about the XP Deus II, but I have no personal experience with it. The Manticore is of course amazing, and my favourite machine ever. But it's quite an investment, especially at full price now that the sale periods are over. But if you have the budget, you want to dive in head first and see yourself using it a lot, absolutely go for it! (I'm not affiliated with Minelab or sponsored sadly haha, just a bit of a brand loyalist due to my good experiences with it over the years.)
Great find that boatswains call. Tough to date it though, the British broad arrow mark was used through both world wars and phased out in the 80s. Most things I find with that mark are WW2 era.
Thanks for the info! This is probably one of my favourite finds now.
I too looked up the whistle and that's a very cool find. Congrats!
Thanks! It goes well with the WWII silver Captain's bars I found in 2023.
✌🏼
Subscribed from Finland! Happy hunting from a fellow detectorist!😊🍀
Welcome aboard, and happy hunting!
What acid did you use? I buy acid neutralizer from forest city metal detectors, i like it better than the baking soda because the bubbles aren't so violent, but I have used baking soda before, also the neutralizer will help remove the mark from the stone
I used the platinum acid and just baking soda to neutralize, it's cheap and easy and the abrasive paste it forms is great for cleaning the coin afterwards.
Interesting
Thanks! I love finding old coins to do this with.
Nice recap! This is the first video I've seen of yours. I've subscribed and look forward to watching more. Happy New Year to you.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel. Happy New Year!
Absolutely Fantastic! So many interesting treasures and it’s fascinating to think about who they belonged to. This was so fun to watch. So many cool things to see. Bravo Scoopy Joe!
Thank you so much! That's why I enjoy finding anything, even an old pulltab from the 60s/70s is a relic now. It's so interesting how much history is buried everywhere you look!
Really enjoy watching your hunts. I always try and get in some time hunting in North Van when I'm in port.
Thank you! I've only detected a couple times in North Van so far. Are you a Merchant Marine?
@@ScoopyJoe In the navy. So we come over from Victoria a couple times a year for functions in Van.
Some really awesome finds! Congrats on hitting 1k subscribers. I hope 2025 is the most successful year yet for your channel and your treasure pile 🚀🤑
Thanks for your support!! I have high hopes for treasure this year.
Great finds congratulations.
Thank you!
Lolllolo
Love the videos 😊
Thank you!!
I liked the whistle!
It's very loud! Probably the third or fourth of those whistles I've found.
What a year Detecting lots of awesome finds
Thank you!
Needs more cat.
She likes to be the center of attention.
You did better then me, I got no gold, half the silver you got, a lot less junkers, but one area I think I did better was old pennies, I got a whole bunch of king George pennies and wheeties, I think 14 combined, plus some young liz
I also hope to get out more next year, more times per week and more hours per session My clad count was like $130 or something, once I added in some of my change I didn't find detecting to bring my rolls up to full rolls, I went back to the bank with $160
Yeah the total hours is key, I think I did around 200-300 hours this year and I still feel like I didn't get out enough haha.
Thanks for another great year of detecting! Looking forward to seeing what treasures you find in 2025!
Thank you! Hopefully more gold comes my way!
Boom .... let's go let's go treasure and adventure ✌👵
Thanks for watching!
Good thing your battery ran out and you changed parks, whenever i find something good I always think about all the things that happened and choices i made to go over that one spot and how if stuff was just slightly different i never would have swung over that spot
A Christmas Miracle! That first park was making me feel pretty discouraged, absolutely nothing but a couple bits of foil and the grass was too soggy. I'm very happy I decided to check the other one. Sunk cost fallacy is hard to shake when you're set on detecting one area but sometimes it pays to move. Then again, no area is ever hunted out completely and going back to a bad park can still lead you to some treasure if you hit a spot you managed to miss the other times. I still pull old silver out of the busiest trashiest beach downtown, it gets hit more than anything by detectorists but there's always something there!
boom let's go let's go treasure and adventure ✌👵
That is a sweet find Scoopy. Congratulations!
Thanks! Now it will be even harder to ignore those loud foil signals knowing they might be platinum!
Glad your battery held up for you. Great video thanks for sharing.
I was pretty surprised it lasted that long after only 15 minutes charging in my car. Thanks for watching!
Great 💍 find congratulations
Metal detecting a Lake Michigan beach and got a 6 on my 800 that turned out to be someone's chewed gum, wrapped in its foil. Second target was 13 and turned out to be a nickel. Next target was a 6 and almost walked on as I didn't want another wad of gum, but it turned out to be a Platinum ring. Exciting isn't it?
It's addictive for sure, you have to dig the trash for a chance to find the treasure.
That was obviously the angle atop that tree, but someone terrorized it
That is when you turn around and walk away 😅
2:33 dimes might be the most common coin I find, or at least out of nickels dimes and quarters, i found a lot of loonies this year, not sure what i found more of Also that snake ring, i cant belive you found a ring out there on the sidewalk, i didnt even recognise it as a ring
6:29 do you have a ring straightner, I found a squished ring a few months ago and bought a ring straightner off Amazon, it cost like $20 I think and came with a finger sizer, a ring sizer, a polish cloth, a rubber mallet, and a bar you hit the ring down with the mallet
I have such a compulsive habit now of scanning the ground wherever I'm walking. The most disappointing time was earlier this year when I saw a gold chain ahead of me on the seawall, but the people right in front of me picked it up before I could get to it! If I had been walking 5 seconds earlier I would have got it.
I have an old acrylic turkey baster I use as a conical ring form that works well for reshaping most rings. This one was so badly crushed that it began to crack a little when I tried to reform it, I gave up once it was vaguely ring shaped for fear of destroying it.
Is the camera a hidden one or just a GoPro he done that boldly I think it should be reported to the police or to the west coast treasure hunters club I’m a member also just so everyone knows who that person is 😂 good luck at least cam was on able to see his face and body
It's a very visible chest mounted GoPro with a flashing red light haha. Thank you!
Ever test silver plate, it turns blue......for a split second, usually I know it's fake but I test anyways, when I see that blue I'm like oh shit it's real, then a split second later it disappears and I'm like ah oh well fake plated
@@digginggopher I ran the test a couple times and made sure to scratch very deep. I also got a brownish red reaction on the nitric acid but it doesn't show up well on camera with the black touchstone. Also I think my nitric acid is too old.
Found an earring while doing some treasure hunting without a metal detector around BC Place Stadium after the Taylor Swift concerts. While it doesn't have a silver stamp, it's quite heavy and looks like it could be silver so I tested it using some 18k testing acid which turns milky white/blue in the presence of silver.
👍
My friend's sister went to the Swift concert in Toronto, she brought us back cupcakes and gummy candies from the concert, they were actually pretty high quality junk foods
It's been quite pleasant in Vancouver so far; my sister in law went to the Friday show and had a great time. Although I'm amazed no one here has made the "it's the end of an Era" joke yet, lol.
My favorite place to detect in a park is behind benches. Found a couple rings that way. And lots of change.
I've not had much luck behind the benches, I guess too many other detectorists around here might be checking them.
