After 4 years of work it's finally time to start. The Turbo Vortec 4200 swapped Toyota Corolla fitted with custom manifolds and a dry sump system. The idle and tuning need to have lots of work done to them but it's well on it's way now that it runs. This was the first start on Ethanol and the first time I've messed with DBW systems. Well done. It is a huge thing to realize you've made a mistake and reiterate the the design and go again. I've seen you spend a bunch of time on this and I know how hard it can be to chop it up and start anew. I look forward to how it ultimately turns out. I had asked you a couple years back as I was putting a Ford 8.8 rear in my Mercedes and you were generous with your knowledge.

    I've only got a mig welder and very comfortable working with sheet metal. I was initially thinking MAP gas and Alumaweld to do aluminum, but I'm afraid all the heat will warp the piss out of it and leak like a sieve. Any reason I couldn't do something similar for a full wet sump on a 4200? Putting one in a '65 Chevelle, so rear sump and thinking 8 quarts for capacity if I go turbo down the road.

    • @slightedengineering

    This seems like a fairly good video. But you don't necessarily want the engine centered. In some applications it should be offset to get better driveline angles. Most manufacturers offset the rear diff. One axle will usually be longer than the other. For instance someone asked me one day if the engine in my old Dodge truck was crooked or off center. I laughed and explained Dodge used equal length axles and offset the engine and trans slightly for driveline angle. Chevy and ford offset the rear diff. It's also done this way in some independent rear cars because the diff is centered. Also some transmissions have the output shaft offset.

    • @slightedengineering

      That and because it's in double sheer, it would have to fail in 2 separate points at the same time. Also, rolled steel is much stronger than cast, which is what the knuckle is made from in this case.

    Be aware that the standard import/export to STL may not have the best quality if you do not adjust your options when saving. This is true for any CAD software I have personally and professionally used. Generally cranking the deviation and angle options to the min valves as long as the file does not become probability large is easiest.

    Not too fussed about looks as it’s hidden 99% of the time but I would be worried about the major differences in tube lengths per cylinder, the sudden sharp corners that are going to disrupt flow and the two tubes facing each other either side of the concentric. I’m sure it’ll only be a small percent of horsies lost and nothing catastrophic but for future projects I’d keep bits like that in mind before going straight into the build. Spend longer on the design phase than the build phase in my opinion

      In theory, you could, but that would be more like a system implemented in rally cars. There's some specific hardware they implement and very sofisticated tuning to do this. It also is very hard on turbos, so it would necessitate changing components fairly often.

    Great work, just saw your channel and think you're doing good work. If you want a lower cost fast option for the next 4l60e you can skip the shift kit and do the controls with switches or buttons for each speed. For the light car you might want a t350 instead of the 4l60.

    • @slightedengineering
      @slightedengineering 10 месяцев назад

      By modifying the Trans to full manual I don't need a TCM since the engine is running a standalone ECU. The 4l60e can also bolt right up to the engine where a t350 wouldn't. Plus I wanted to have 4 gears rather than 3. If this was a drag car the t350 would've made sense given cost and the limited operating window.
