A lot of performers in the "Tribe" have the frizzy fro hair going on. I couldn't grow long hair myself because it was too thick and grew straight up like a trolls.

I hate to say it but hair metal getting killed off by grunge and punk gave me a whole new period of music life. My hair fell out in the very early '90s and I was pretty depressed about it. You're kind of just kicked out of the club. Just deal with what you get. I'll tell you what though, I have to call my dad and tell him he was right when I was a kid. He was always telling me those guys were wearing wigs.

I agree about David Coverdale. He always had decent hair, but in the mid to late 80s he dyed it blond and teased it.

I saw KISS in concert last year. Paul Stanley was DEFINITELY wearing a wig on stage. It looked very different than his hair does in interviews. In fact, earlier that same day, he was photographed getting ice cream with his real hair! His real hair isn't bad, and the wig looked awesome!

Vicious Circle , Hollywood Vampires and Waking the Dead are severly underrated masterpieces. Still jam those songs to this day. L.A. Guns like Ratt should been bigger than bands like Motley. Their collection of great songs is so vast.

My friends were in one of those Sunset Strip bands. They all had great hair except the bass player. His hairline was quickly evaporating, so he spent thousands of dollars on hair replacement surgeries. It looked okay for a while, but now he wears a bandana to hide it. I had another friend who used to visit one of those hair clinics back in the late-80s. He spent all kinds of money on lotions and bullsh*t they made him rub into his scalp. It was like that “Helsinki” sh*t that used to be advertised on TV to grow hair. It never worked. He once was sitting in the clinic lobby with a famous singer/songwiter who lived near us. It was so taboo in those days. A couple of those Warrant guys were thinning badly in their heyday. The singer and guitarist seemed to take the balding in stride. I don’t know if any of the other guys wore wigs, though.

The lead guitarist of The Sweet, don’t know if they’re regarded as a hair band, but Andy Scott now wears the most ridiculous blonde wig. I saw them (Scott is the only member of the band still alive) about 17 yrs ago and he looked so silly, but that may have been intentional, who knows. It really was hard not to laugh but they sounded terrific so I ended up forgetting about it until after the concert and my sister mentioned how bad he looked wearing that crazy white long wig 🤣

Gene Simmons’ wig always looks terrible. Elliott Easton and Ric Ocasek from The Cars (I know, not hair metal) but just 2 that came to mind. Their hair never moves at all, unlike the others.

No, people like YOU took it all too seriously. We had a blast, moved on with various looks over the years. It's YOUR problem if you focus on a single period in time. Back then there was no Hair Metal. That was later fabricated later to diss Glam Rock by pundits. Poison was doing what we were doing back in PA long before we came to LA to make it. Sunset Strip had nothing to do with our look. It was set before we ever moved out here. By the way, no wig here! BTW: Extensions are not a wig. Neither for me and never has been. Wig Metal.... for fucks sake!

So many great lesser known (and often superior) "glam, hair, sleaze, shock, etc." metal bands such as- Odin, Seduce, London, The Ultras, Creature, Glamour Punks, Willow Wisp, Wikked Gypsy, Fatal Attraction, Salems Lott, Geisha, Halloween, Diamond Rexx, Hawk, Tuff Luck, Dogs D'amour, Wrathchild (UK), Peppermint Creeps, The Zeros, Celebrity Skin, Kery Doll, Texas Vamps, Demolition Gore Galore, Lizzy Borden, Haunted Garage, etc.

Not totally hair metal, but Frank Dimino and Punky Meadows from the 70s band Angel obviously have wigs. Greg Giuffria (Angel, Giuffria, House of lords) had great hair in the 70s!

There are many excellent musicians who care about the music and the look. Both are important for a complete presentation.

Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs and Rudolf Schenker, of the Scorpions, all lost their hair fairly early on. Klaus still wears a hat, Matthias wears a bandana or hat and Rudy just kinds cut his really close and dyes it blond. Rudy just lost some in the very front so it just looks like his hairline is further back. Elton John tried the transplant thing and it failed so he now wears a wig as well. A matter of personal preference I guess and in some cases it might have been encouraged especially during what was always referred to as the “hair era.” Personally, I think bald is super shmexy!

In front of the camera John Wayne always wore a toupe. Away from work and the cameras he took it off.

Great video! You had a front row seat to so much of that scene, it’s always enjoyable to hear you talk about it. I just remembered, the first time I saw Extreme was when they played with Warrant and Dangerous Toys in ‘89. I’m pretty sure no one in Warrant or DT was sporting a wig, BUT…about halfway through Extreme’s set, Gary Cherone’s hair was starting to get really sweaty and matted down and you could see how thin it was. He did the rest of the set wearing a hat.

Several years ago I read about Mick Mars wearing a wig and filming the girls, girls, girls video. Supposedly the wind kept knocking it off. Doesn't take away from his badass guitar playing though. 🤘

Oh, how some forget history... Royalty used to grown their hair long after the fall of the Roman Empire to assert dominance and wealth. Hair was strength, such as Samson. Hair was en vogue in colonial times. Go look at all those people in the days of Europe and the founding of the USA. Mozart, Beethoven, many others wore wigs. Paganini had long hair, and put on such a show that women swooned or fainted. Status. Stage. Fashion. Long hair has had it's time off and on throughout time in various ways. Long hair was around longer than short hair. Someone had to decide to cut it for some reason. So the mid to late 80's was a time of hair. So too was the 70's, but they were hippies and didn't bathe often. Was it just the hair itself? It was more than that. It was the whole look, not just the hair. It was that time in history that the public wanted it, and they got it. 80's style. Good looking, loud, exciting. That was the marketing, the 'show' part of the music. That was like that before that time. In other music, say country, you had big cowboy hats. If you just want to be like everyone else, like today, where most just look like someone from the crowd, the studio is the place for you. Because there it doesn't matter, it is just about the music. But the stage? In public? Putting on a show? It was about the show. Visual. Give the public what they want. And then the times changed. Because those who control the industry changed it, and music got ugly. Bald became popular, and tons of tattoos, trashy dumpster clothes, etc. It was that time. And we all can look and wonder why all the bands wanted to look like shit and be pale, gaunt, and sickly. And the answer is it was the time to market that look and other types of music. Oftentimes, especially in these times, the public is told what to like. And they do. It's all how you market what you are selling and for what purpose you are selling it.
