It's Okay to think your ideas are cool, and that people might like them. If you give it a shot and feel embarrassed at the ridiculous, tropy, cliche, poorly thought-out nonsense you put in front of your [audience], it doesn't mean you were wrong, and that you should stop. It means the opposite. It means you gotta keep doing it until you learn how to develop those cool ideas, so that when you put them in front of people... they will say...

Interesting point, my monitor is 408 nits so I had to, aside from all that you mentioned, set a "custom max output" on the CST (color space transform) to the adjustment layer to 408, this did manage to get me the colors to what seems like an acceptable saturation.
It is not possible to record HLG footage from a "Video Game Source" in OBS. You need to use PQ. OBS does not offer HLG if you add a "video game" source in OBS
nvidia has a studio driver. cant you install that to have live 10 bit live video?
@@Ag89q43G0HyA yes, this video is outdated
Rare!!
Are you referring to my channel being dead? If so, you might check @NeatOnTheRocks
Hello. I believe I found an easier way. I was using 4K capture utility, but I did decided to tinker with OBS after watching this video. I do know there is no way to render HDR without the Studio version (paid) according to Blackmagic Design. I could be wrong. I am using the paid version of 18. My way also allows the bitrate to be adjusted to a similar number as OBS recorded in. That way a minute of 4K60FPS HDR is about 500mb instead of 10gb. So in OBS, I set everything the same as you except I choose "Rec.2100 (PQ)" in advanced color space. I record in 4k HDR 60FPS. In Davinci resolve, you shouldn't need to input color space and gamma on your clips. The data should already be there and marked correctly based on what color space and gamma you recorded in. For my PQ recording, it is set to "Rec.2020" and "Rec.2100 ST2084". The only thing you need to change in Davinci is the timeline color space. Set it to "Rec.2100 ST2084". I was using "Rec.2020ST2084 1000 nits" and it looked great, but so does the other option. My monitor and tv do 400 nits and 700 nits respectively. I have more to test lol. Rendering is also much simpler and my way allows you to watch the video before uploading it. Format "MP4". Codec "H.265". Encoder "GPU", for me "NVIDIA". You need the paid version anyway and GPU is the best option. Encoding Profile "main 10". No need to change the advanced settings as they are already set to match the timeline. Set everything else to preference. I like to go very slow and high quality with a full two pass. I am no expert, but it sounds the best. I leave the data levels to auto so the color space will be limited as limited works on more devices. Then render. Breakdown on things I do differently. OBS - Same as you except Settings/Advanced/Color space/Rec.2100(PQ) Davinci - File/Project Settings/Color Management/Timeline Color Space/Rec.2100 ST2084 Davinci Deliver Tab below Format - MP4 Codec - H.265 Encoder - GPU (example NVIDIA) Encoding Profile - Main10 Set rest to preference. I recommend Advanced Settings/Data Levels be left on "auto". Thanks for the video. It's how I learned the correct way to record HDR in OBS. Have an awesome day!
HDR is a clusterfuck... whoever came up with it had no care about anything but themselves...
thanks man!
Really loved all the tips you give us! I really agreed with the end segment on how we should focus on our gratidue when we're feeling like we're falling behind. We tend to forget on how truly lucky we are :D
Dope video man. Really good stuff!
After setting up OBS, will it show HDR in the OBS preview window or will I need to send the file over to Final Cut to preview it? My setup: Sony Mirrorless camera HDMI out > HDMI in DeckLink Quad HDMI Recorder > OBS recording
Ima keep it real witcha chief: I ain't got a clue
So I have now recorded a video with a length of just 20 seconds using OBS. Your settings are exactly identical to mine (if you want to stream and record 4k HDR, you MUST set it that way) Then I edited the file in davinci resolve (NOT studio) 18.6.4 Build 6 - latest update. I set everything up step by step exactly the way you did it and then I had it rendered. My result is a 5 gigabyte file that cannot be played correctly with VLC. What I mean by that is the following: VLC plays audio/video but only the video file stutters. Audio is fine. what went wrong during rendering? Or is it VLC?
It's VLC. Try uploading to RUclips in an unlisted video and see what happens
I uploaded it unlisted, as was your suggestion. It works perfectly (sound like picture) only one error - RUclips doesn't show me HDR under quality settings When I look on RUclips under My Channel -> Manage Videos -> Content -> Click on Details then I see only 4K completed under the image on the right. Shouldn't HDR be there too? Oh and one more thing, which video player should I use so that I can see in advance what my results look like? Just load it into Davinci? the rendered file@@TheNeatwork
@@Maehonii It does take RUclips a while to process HDR, and I can't remember off the top of my head if YT shows it processing or not. I'd typically just open the render in Resolve to see playback, and you can always check the file properties to make sure it rendered with the correct HDR color space
Maybe you should also tell people that with these settings they can get file sizes of up to 2TB from what might previously have been 20GB
You can use different bitrates to get the file size smaller but I shared what bitrates I use, I can't do the math for you
Well, if you want to upload videos to RUclips in 4k HDR 60fps, you need a bit rate of 200k - cant go any lower otherweise its NOT 60fps or 4k@@TheNeatwork
@@Maehonii Bitrate doesn't drop frames, pixels, or color information, only the amount of data used to convey each, and every codec produces wildly different results at the same bitrate.
okay its bed time over here now. i get in talk with you later again. @@TheNeatwork
Amazing video! Congratulations from Brazil!
Awesome video. the sigh was hilarious and only one knows it who is fidelling to o/p HDR from this workflow. Thanks a lot!
HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE MORE SUBSCRIBERS? GREATV VIDEO DUDE !!!
Premiere Pro now has DirectX HDR support. No need to buy an external device to output to an HDR monitor. You can work in the Rec2100 HLG or Rec2100 PQ space and see preview as HDR. Davinci Resolve hasn't updated cuz they want you to buy their black magic products 🙄
You have great quality! This helped me out a ton, thanks for taking the time to make this
Enjoyed watching this😅
Hi This is truly one of the best video which explains complete process of recording to exporting... I have a query... I wanted to upload my gameplay videos to RUclips... everything is fine... but when my video is like 1-1.5 hrs long... and when I export using DNxHR HQX 10-bit.. the size of the output video is very huge... like in the range of 400+GB for 1.5 hours video... So, I wanted to ask whether is there any other option instead of DNxHR HQX 10-bit which I can use so that my file size is not huge... somewhere in the range of 50-100 GBs and still the RUclips recognizes and creates a HDR version of my video. Further out of curiosity, how long will the RUclips tentatively take to make my video HDR ready... like 12 hours, 1 day or 7-10 days
I believe H265 encoding has support for HDR and should have much smaller file sizes, but you'll have to look into it. As for how long it takes RUclips... who can really say. Unfortunately they don't make HDR much of a priority, so for longer videos like yours I would guess at least a couple days
If not given the specific details on how to do it, you pointed me in the right direction! thank you for this piece of a puzzle my dude :)
You're welcome!
I will tell you what isn't simple. Trying to use Premiere to export an HDR game video. Its almost as if the metadata gets stripped off no matter how you encode it (with HDR settings). RUclips is like nope. No HDR for you. Might have to switch to resolve to not deal worth premiere breaking the metadata flag.
You'll rarely catch me defending Premiere, but to be fair HDR tech is a freakin mess!!!
@@TheNeatwork thanks for the reply. I am going to try Resolve. Flight Simulator (to me, I know it's subjective) looks amazing in HDR (at least the 800nit or whatever HDR my Lg OLED can do). Just for something I can show my friends how cool it looks. I'll keep on trying. Thanks 🙂
I don't have any of these HDR setting in my Davinci Resolve 18.5 I'm using the free version. Might been a good idea to mention that this only works on the paid studio version unless I'm missing something.
if you use Slog to take a video and have P3 monitor. timeline use P3-HLG color space. Output uses P3-HLG color space. you can get a precise color. but you can't get accurate light. and you just get a hdr effect on iPhone. youtube only admits fucking REC2020 COLOR. iPhone hdr effect only needs HLG or PQ gamma not fucking care rec709 ,P3 , REC2020 color space.
Three years old, but I'll ask anyways. Do you know if it burnt through the battery faster than it charges on all the different video qualiti (4K 60, 4K 30 and 1080p 60) or just on highest? Thanks, great video!
Ooo, that's a tough one to answer. I believe so, since I would have tried the lesser qualities, since those would be the ones with no built-in recording limit. Can't quite say for sure though!
@@TheNeatwork thanks anyways! 😅👍
My colors still shift. Blues tint appears in video randomly during playback, even after export.
Yeah, your results may vary. HDR is wonky as shit and is constantly changing, and some Resolve updates have changed how some of this stuff works
@@TheNeatwork I am uploading a video now. If you could take a look at it later when it's done, and give me your thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated. I have obs at 2100hlg and set all resolve settings as u said. Sdr looks dull to me, I'm spoiled...lol.
Elgato's 4K60S+ external capture card can also capture in HDR. The setup is a lot more finnicky since that takes care of the gaming video but audio has to be plugged into the device, so I just record the audio separately and add it in post... but I digress... What I wanted to say is that OBS captures HDR in that very specific color space and gamut (I'm no expert, not even really an amateur, I'm know very little about the subject, but I think I worded it correctly), and for those of us who capture HDR game footage on 4K60S+ and THEN edit in Davinci Resolve, the color space settings should be different, but the problem is... I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY SHOULD BE!
God i miss apex
Thank you! Not sure if I'll handle HDR-recording, but at least I've got some positive vibes from you video 🙂
6:00 no, it's not, so I bought DRS to follow your tutorial 🤣🤣
tank you <3
Exporting a 4K60HDR Gameplay video following your procedure did the job. Thanks. Just 1 issue. The exported file (18 min long) was around 225 GB (the source file is about 50min long and 61 GB in size).
4k60HDR takes a loooooot of data. But to bring it down, switch to H265 encoding (making sure to still select 10bit)
How did you get it to work??
4:57 Them Bitches Get Bright 😎
Im using the freeform shape instead of rectangle and I cant get the glow to only show in one spot at a time. It either shows everywhere or nowhere at all. I've watched the same part "you guessed it" atleast 30 times now and I still cant get only one part of the shape to glow
Nice video man! I was in the same boat as you all of my OBS videos recorded in HDR using Nvenc HEVC (H265) are washed out in Davinci Resolve Studio. My only question is, why did you put REC 709 in the Output Color Space (Color Space Transform effect)? Isn't it supposed to be REC 2020 too? I thought REC 709 is not HDR? thx
I don't have the video pulled up rn to reference, but iirc setting the output to 709 is for the purposes of monitoring your grade, and you can switch back at the end of your project to export in HDR.
WISDOM!!!
Haha thank you!
thanks for this vid! one question tho. when i convert it with ffmpeg it turns the border from black to gray. would you happen to know why or how to fix it?
I've noticed that sometimes too and I think it has to do with the conversion process somehow. Make sure in all of your programs you have your color space set to "full" rather than "limited" or something of the sort. Wish I could be of more help!
@@TheNeatwork ill be sure to make sure of that. thanks for the quick reply and Happy New Year!
@@allygindahouse anytime 😄
2:14 Input Gamma selection is no longer on that context menu in 18.1.1 (studio), lstill looking around to find new location. but i think its gets covered off in the further steps. testing with a HDR mode clip from AC: Valhalla on a samsung HDR 27" 240hz monotor and a LG REd Eagle HDR monitors.
Let me know how it goes
I know this comment is a year old, but it is still there. Things are just in separate submenus now so it's not a giant list to scroll through. The same options are there, just all the BM options are in a BM submenu, rec2020 in their own submenu, etc. If you don't have "use separate color space and gamma" checked in the project settings you won't see a separate input gamma section.
actually it's still there, just set the color management for the project first, and then you'll see the setting show up.
I don't have the "Input Color Space" in the Clip Context menu
Great video, but Davinci removed the color space option when right-clicking clips, so I couldn't get this to work. Also you should mention you cant use Resolve in fullscreen because it will automatically put your screen back to SDR.
One issue I'm having with HDR is that the screen goes black when I change my capture card (elgato 4k60 pro) image to Rec. 2100(PQ), this only happens when the Xbox SX resolution is 4k 60fps HDR. When I change back to 1440p, I'm able to see the image at rec. 2100(PQ). Any suggestions? The Xbox resolution is 4K UHD to be exact, that might have something to do with it.
Sorry friend, I'm unfamiliar with working with higher-end capture cards. It sounds like the 4K60 Pro doesn't support 4k and HDR at the same time, which I could not find clarification for on the product page.
@@TheNeatwork It only allows to me to change the image to rec 2100 PQ when my xbox resolution is set to 120hz (either 1080p 120hz, or 1440p 120hz) if it's is set at 60hz, it shows the black screen again.
@@TheNeatwork My only fix is by setting the resolution at 120hz, change image to rec 2100 PQ, then set the resolution back to 4k. It would still allow me to see the screen at 4k. But once I close obs it will show me a black screen again, meaning that I have to do that step again to make it work. Kinda frustrating but it's what it is.
