To fool oneself into committing a mistake of this magnitude, under such circumstances implies serious character flaws. She wants a life centered on herself, a self she doesn't even know who or what it is. If her little epiphany carried the slittiest trace of any moral honesty, she would realize that trying to be a plus one, especially for a man like Shane, is the best she could do with her life. And the best she have ever done with herself, apparently. At least he is open and willing. She thinks she is better than him and judges him from the loveless perspective of a total disconnection. She is a narcissistic, weak, and even devious. Horrible, too horrible even for a villain.

One of my favorite scenes ever. They are both flawed and bad, and them staying together at the end is beautiful because it’s both or their acceptance of that. Even if that doesn’t make them morally or ethically correct, everyone can relate to a degree, because we are flawed in varying degrees and areas.

Rachel is in way over her head, entitled, and clearly not as smart as think she is. It's crazy that she complains about being a potential trophy wife while not considering how all the money Shane has can greatly help her in her career. She is really complaining about a non-issue. Billions of people would kill to be in her place and use that money to go forward. Rachel is really not thinking about the bigger picture here, at all. Also she complains to Shane about him not caring about her enough, but does she care about him? She doesn't side with him during the suite reservation argument and tells him to drop it when it's clear he's in the right and is actively being cheated by the hotel. Also, Rachel is quite a boring person. Instead of talking to her husband, she prefers to stare silently at nothing (and especially after the mom arrives). She cares more about an article she has to write, instead of the honeymoon. She complains to Shane that all he cares about is sex, but what more does she really offer him? She keeps looking for errors in her marriage, instead of trying to fix them.

To be honest, Rachel is also at fault with her whole "I wanna make a difference" thing. Her desire to make an impact is great, but it is also stemming from a bit of self-centeredness and impracticality. She could have used her newfound wealth to be someone influential, to make a difference. Shane's mom telling her she could just manage the board for fundraising and stuff is a really powerful position to create real tangible change. I bet she could even ask them for her own business and they will give it to her. Her fear of being a mere trophy wife doesnt have to happen, because her husband will allow her to do what she wants (as much of a jerk Shane is, he seems willing to do everything for his wife). Tons of people want to help the world but are caught up with their jobs and chores and worries, but she had an opportunity to have the resources, connections, and time to do just that. But instead of seeing that, she saw it as "I will eitjer just be an arm candy or I get out". No, girl, there is a way you all can win in this. I think that is why Belinda left her during her rant. Belinda was like, "Really? Thats your problem? I also wanna help people, have my own thing, but I cant because I never had a shot. You have that shot now, and you are whining?" This kinda tells me that she doesnt really want to make the world a better place, she just wants the feelings that come with it. To have a purpose, to be relevant, which is very understandable and sooo much better than Shane's own focus to his own enjoyment. And she could get all that, again, if she only could stop her pity party.

@@oneirocriticaster9402 I work from NGO's side and what Shane's mom said is true, it's about the money. Corporattions do a lot of damage, that is no secret. They do philantrophy and corporate social responsibility partly to make up for the damage, that is well known. But regardless of the intentions or methods, they do actually do help people. Because building electricity and clean water systems in rural areas, researching drugs for deadly diseases, or giving out scholarships actually need funds (surprise!). Rachel means well, but she isnt even good at what she does nor she knows what to do next. We keep pushing on when the going gets tough and when we are down on our knees because we have no choice, she doesn't have the no option option, she has a way out. It's the human instinct to run away from adversity, it's how our ancestors survived. She's normal, not a masochist or self sabotagging in any way... But she became acutely aware of what she's become during this trip, and she's not happy about it, but what's the alternative? Uncertainty and destitution... Shane loves her, he's not perfect (For sure) but he did make her the center of his whole life, as long as she remains an obedient wifey who doesn't do a lot of thinking 😂😅 or so he thought... He was hoping she'd be unapologetically vapid and in complete denial of it, or at least so self centered she'd come to terms with it at some point. Welps, she's not. Did they live happily ever after? I don't know, that's the show for you though. You're gonna think about it. Also, love that Shane is also young and hot, they could have dumbed this down and made him old or unattractive, but he's not... And that also gets you thinking, because he's young and hot, but still wants a trophy wife.

I interpreted her character as flawed yet entirely preventable. She knew she married him fast, and as a result, is having second thoughts. At the moment she can get away, after discussing divorce, she doesn’t. Her problems are a result of complicity

@@shadysorkin9214it’s more of a struggle with her holding onto her autonomy within this kind of marriage dynamic and their classes clashing. Unfair and dehumanizing emotions sprout up with these kinds of relationships and it should be discussed. Focusing on Victimhood and ‘who’s good and who’s bad’ is just a way to avoid the real issue at hand. his love and kindness is conditional on her just being submissive and standing there not busting his balls on anything. I’m sure at the beginning he put his best face foreword and the love is basically being bombed: fancy tours, dinners, gifts and luxury. Guys live for the chase and She was the pretty girl to impress and get. Now he’s got her and she’s only noticing his tone death and negative traits on this trip. Because now he doesn’t have to perform as much. She’s married him and emotionally invested. She’s social currency with his peers: A beautiful and educated woman. She has less wealth and he can lord over her the fact their marriage is hypergamy. She should be grateful for his ‘charity’ bringing her up. It’s a good place to prop a women. The veiled guilt and power can keep a woman fixed in that relationship. Many stay for life. Indifferent and complacent. Afraid to leave because their husbands told them to not get a job and 10 years down the line the woman gets cheated on and they can’t just leave without it being a mess especially with kids involved. You have to actually be in love for relationships with such different class issues to succeed. I’m struggling to wonder if this guy actually loves her. They way he shuts her down and doesn’t really care about her concerns and wants to stuff it down with flaunting his own wealth seems off. She should leave, honestly. Or maybe hope for some growth in their relationship where he sees her as an equal or at least acknowledges her emotions.
