Your also causing a negative pressure inside the room your heating by having the burner air intake inside the room and the exhaust on the outside. The result is it will pull cold air in from the outside like from around the door etc

You should definitely not install the silencer indoors. It usually has a small hole on one side to allow condensation to drain off. In addition, it is generally not completely sealed as it is only spot-welded. As a result, exhaust gases escape, which can quickly become dangerous in enclosed spaces.

You should try putting the exhaust in a coil configuration to get more surface area within the water tank - perhaps better in a cylinder or barrel to accommodate a coil and aid better heat transfer to the water. At present your system only has a foot of exhaust submerged in water. Better still what about an air to water heat exchanger. Cool project though 👍

I remember my dad recharging duracells back in the seventies. Used a car battery charger with resistors to limit the current. Needless to say he left it on too long and one of them exploded. C cells can go off with quite a bang!😮 Best to check cell voltage when new, and set your charge voltage at that with a current limit. Then the current will drop as it charges. I'd be inclined to do it outside in a metal box though, just in case!😂

Looked these up and found article after article about how these were very dangerous. I remembered the breakthrough in the 90’s that you could buy alkaline rechargers that were smart and controlled the power carefully to refill them slowly over a few hours. So are they dangerous?

I'd prolly use a bunch of thin pipes in parallel. You'd need to fabricobble at least one manifold, but you'll get much more surface area without creating much back pressure.

IME I've found that using a low current (<100mA) NiCad/NiMH charger will work reasonably well for some batteries (not Duracell!) as they won't get hot (don't use Li-Ion chargers or high current) - if you catch them at around 1.2-1.3V then that tends to work better than anything lower - however it's a bit hit and miss as some will work and others won't - fine for "non-critical" devices such as clocks or remotes etc which have a low current draw but not so great on other stuff like the thermostat! I tend to get a few more cycles out of the alkalines this way. I'm going to see if I can find one of those battery genie jobbies 👍

Does that heater have a forced exhaust system? Otherwise I'd be worried about the exhaust flow stagnating and resulting in CO2/CO buildup in the room with it with that much pipe, especially with no draft helping it since it is going downward. Other thing you have to remember is that a radiator like this works both ways, when the unit is off the heat from the room can more quickly exit through the metal piping.

Hi Andy, I'd say that's one of the best designs yet for dumping heat into the room, the thinner the pipe wall the better it'll work. I have to do the matt black trick on the bike headers all the time, just remember the further away from the source you stand the lower the reading on the infrared gun but when you use it up close the sensor is about an inch below the laser pointer so aim an inch high.

It’s not free when you have to buy the heater and fill it was diesel, not to mention the likelihood of prematurely corroding the exhaust pipe and I assume the water is going to start boiling at some stage. Be a lot cheaper to just buy a small water heater. If you really want hot water from a diesel heater, look at a water heat exchanger. Much safer and cleaner setup

Just found this channel. If a radiator is cold at the top, it definitely needs bleeding. Also, if the water in the tank is still getting hotter when the pump is running, the radiator is too small, and eventually it's going to boil, as there is no way to tell the heater to switch off. This is not a good thing. Have you tried a large cast iron radiator, with direct flue gasses from top entry to bottom exit?

The radiator will eventually coke up but you can always flush this out or make a tubular radiator a few " thick 😉

Just curious what the cost of oxygen and acetylene is over there? Its pretty cheap here in the US, I pay about $20 to refill a 155 CF oxygen cylinder, and about $70 for the same size acetylene refill. Unfortunately I rent the cylinders at a cost of $75 per cylinder per year due to a agreement between the gas suppliers in my area not to refill customer owned cylinders over a certain size. In other words you ether rent the cylinders or pay considerably more per cubic foot of gas with the small cylinders, they are going to get your money one way or another 🤣.
