This is the first of a series of videos on making and tailoring rectangular construction tunics and dresses to fit modern body types. This type is construction was commonly used up until the 12-13th centuries and is my go-to for reenactment. Here is warping up the "other" type of loom - this technique works for board or box looms for tablet weaving.
Speed Warping an Inkle Loom for Tablet Weaving
Просмотров 27 тыс.4 года назад
Speed warping or Continuous warping makes tablet weaving a much easier process! Here we discuss what patterns you can and can't speed warp, why, and then set up a loom from 0 to ready to weave in less than 30 minutes. Handouts are available here: silkandquill.com/speedwarping/
Thank you for your videos; the one on securing the beginning and end of a loom was very helpful. I use that technique now. 20+ years ago I invented a warp-weighted loom (I called it the "WarpWrapper") partly to make it easier to spin out the twist in tablet-weaving. Not sure how to upload a picture of it. Easy to make. Not designed for easy transport.
Thank you for this, I'm still really struggling with the concept, but i'm determined to work it out, as warping is the bane of my life. Question - How do you account for twist during the weave with this set up? I use fishing swivels now, but obviously they wouldn't be able to be used with a continuous warp?
One 20 minute video and you’ve answered all my questions, solved some of my weaving problems, and gave me great ideas. And I’ve only skipped through it. Thank you!
There are no handouts to print out!
Why did you have 2yelloow. And 2blue instead of 3 blue and 1 yellow?
Dziękuję 🎉❤
Do you have any videos that'd be good for an absolute beginner to Inkle looms?
What about the belt looms that have one end tied to something stationary like a wall or a pillar, and the other end tied off to the weaver's belt? I've seen at least one painting showing that type of setup.
I have a question about one of the straight looms the one with the knobs on the top. That seems like the easiest one to build at home, so that's what I'm testing out. Do you have any historical information about that one? Does it have a special name and how long has that type been made? What are the quirks of using that one?
Hello from France Wonderfull video, but link doesn't work, where can l find the sheets please 😃
Thanks a bunch. I just finished building my mill and this is a great resource to using it.
super useful, thank you! Just one question: can you trim down the cut so that you have no fringes at all and still have the band safe from unravelling?
Holy crap I understand now. THANK YOU. ❤
You're so welcome! I'm glad it's helpful
Thank you so much for this video! I know this is a bit older, but it saved my bacon. I guess I have some re-threading to do!😅
But what about twists in the threads as you weave? wont they not be able to untwist?
Ha! I’ve also got to thank you for the Jaggerspun Maine information. I just moved to Maine this past spring, so being able to get yarn etc from a local outfit is perfect. I’ll tell them you are my reference. Thank you so much, Laura
Hi there - I am so glad I ran into your how-to for threading a horizontal warping mill. I have been using a warping board using the two crosses for a while. I inherited a warping mill when I bought a used floor loom. I have been wanting to use it for my next project and was having a bit of a struggle translating the thread end and the group or raddle end. Your video is clear as a bell. Thank you so much. I have strung the mill up with post-a-notes and taken photos and saved your video so I have plenty of references between weaving projects. Thank you so much. Take good care.
Do you have a new link for your handouts? The one you give here doesn’t seem to work. Thanks
This is great!!! Thank you so much!!! This information is extremely useful! Clear, concise, thorough - perfect! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had learned about tablet weaving a couple years ago, and mentally put it on my “want to try this sometime” list. I was thinking of actually taking the next step, but the variety of looms was so varied, and the advantages/disadvantages of particular options unclear.
Hi Libby, I just watched your videos again. If you are thinking of doing any more videos, which I hope you will, I would really like to see one about how to adjust the warp, and weave, on the traditional Oseberg loom. I also really appreciated the three videos about measuring and designing a garment, and wished the series continued to the sewing and the finished garment. Also one about attaching trim/tablet weavings to garments would be really helpful! I ask all these because I like the way you explain things so they make sense. Thank you for what you have posted and hoping for more! Thank you, Henya
Qué bello diseño!!! ¿Cómo es el urdido?
thank you for this! i have woven many things already and my most recent make the pattern was on the bottom, but also not only had i managed to flip my S & Z, but i think i'd also messed up loading some of the cards because i made a completely different pattern. instead of starting over, tho, i just rolled with it. but i've downloaded that handout and will refer to it in the future! again, thank you so much!
love your shuttle!!!
Love the kid noise. I really miss the kid noise.
What's FCA?
Vidoe playing in the background and suddenly I hear a Wookie! 😂😂😂
Lol this is my life
I didn't understand anything of the last part part of the video. For the beginning, for people that don't know absolute nothing, what did you advice?
All you need to start are two fixed points. They can be anything! I used the handles on a treadmill and a doorknob because that happened to be a convenient place in my house.
I’m doing my 2nd weave ever and they both been on the bottom. I’ve rethreaded, I’ve checked again and again and the warps are both s and a correct. It’s the oseberg pattern and it’s driving me mental. I can’t figure out what this is, but turning the entire work fixes it. Just meh.. I’m guessing I’ll figure it out. Thank you for your otherwise brilliant explanation
Which pattern are you working from? One of the hardest parts of card weaving is that there's no consistent use of s or z referring to either the cards or the thread
I love this idea! I'm new to weaving. I would suggest, though, that you cut the weft a little short before passing it through the final loop so that it automatically ends INSIDE the weave. Then you don't have the butt end of it where you cut it showing.
Totally works too! I've taken to using very sharp embroidery snips that let me clip right at the edge.
Thanks!!!
This is great for the end! But how do I go back and do the beginning?
I hope it ok to ask ? On this i just finished my band and it curled up from the edge any one know why i think bad tension any thoughts i would appreciate it
Absolutely fine to ask! How were your cards set up? If you're threaded all S or Z, bands will tend to twist or spiral. When you cut it off the loom, wash it gentley, fold in a towel to get rid of most of the water, then spiral wrap snugly on a plastic tube to dry. That helps flatten bands out
@@EllisifGydasdottir thanks for the reply i will try it
Any changes you could do a video on pushing twist out with the different looms showing your method ?
Dealing with twist is largely a matter of reversing the pattern. It is a big reason I prefer looms with a long working area. If a pattern has one or two cards that have to go forward all the time, I actually put them in bobbins and weight them off the back of the loom. Otherwise warp weighted is fantastic for high twist patterns
@@EllisifGydasdottir ok i will try that thanks for the reply
Brilliant! Thank you so much! I’ve just started wayfaring and was keen to make a more period-correct loom instead of my inkle. You are awesome ❤
This is a excellent video i had a lot of ? With the Ísberg style tablet loom should I take the weaving off or is it ok to leave it with tension.
It stretches over time! I learned this lesson the hard way with brocade :). It won't hurt the band really, but if you're working with brocade designs you can end up with spacing between the brocade threads.
@@EllisifGydasdottir thanks so much for the reply it helps
So very very helpful thanks 😊 so much for great video take care Katy from NZ 😊
Thank You. Clear and concise makes learning for me extremely easy. Thank You, from a new band weaver.
Your shuttle is beautiful!
Shame you didn't cover measuring warp and putting the cards on
Watch the "Speed warp" video for that :).
These works really so beautiful..💁♂️ You deserve more subscribers..
GREAT information. I'm always doing things upside down - and at least was happy it was happening. Using Tablets At Work as well as several other books and using twisted threads to design and check things. Still new but have heart set on doing TAW "twill" and also have the two "Lilies" books to play with
I adore those books! I hope this helps. Twill is definitely my challenge mode too!
Good Good very beautiful 💐🌹💖🔔
This has been SO helpful! Thank you! <3
You are very welcome! I am delighted to help.
you are a LIFESAVER! This has saved me from a complete nervous breakdown. There is no virtual hug in the universe big enough for my gratitude!
I'm so glad it's helpful! It was definitely one of the most frustrating things learning to weave for me.
This video was recommended to me after a long Elewys binge while crocheting. Glad to have found you!
Thank you so much! I adore weaving and hope you love it!
Good weaving
This is so simple and clever. Thank you for making this video!
Love it! Subbed to not miss the next instalment.
I have had an attack of life lol, but will work on getting the rest up :).
@@EllisifGydasdottir It's a problem when Adulting gets in the way of the fun stuff. 😉
Thank you so much Libby, I'm a bit spatially challenged and need formula to follow. The way you have broken down the shapes and measurements gives me a guide to how wide I will need to weave my cloth to minimise wastage.
Minimal waste is one of the best parts of this type of patterning! I can't wait to hear about your project, I adore weaving!
This is what is missing in most explanationa, I bet my next tunic will look so much better.
