How to light your canoe on fire!

Primitive firemaking skills are a fun hobby and could come in handy sometime! Using tools made out of materials straight from Mother Earth. One can feel more connected to the real world. Here we use Artemisia Tridentata (Sage) and Juniperus Occidentalis (Juniper). These plants dominate the Great Basin and are readily available for a small firemaking kit. Life can get a little bit boring during ...

    Nice demo. I just bought a used Mohawk Probe canoe, "outfitting by Mikey". Took it out a few days ago in June 2024 and six vinyl patch D-rings separated from the Royalex. I'm a rusty open boater, and now I'll be using a hair dryer to dry some glue before I stick the soft rings to hull. Thanks.

    I have a small crack in my 12' Cross Fish AceTec board. Should I drill a hole at each end of the crack to stop the crack and then V Dremel a channel over the crack for the epoxy? Or cut out the crack and make a hole like you did with these repairs?

    • @CrazyCranker
      @CrazyCranker 2 года назад

      @Ryan Allen Well, I give it a shot but the 2 part epoxy isn't cooperating. Such a small hole is proving to be a pain to fill in even with tape. I should have bought the stuff your using. Round 2 coming up-lol.

    Finally going to reposition the seat in my Wenonah Prism so I can leave the the yoke in place for portaging on trips. Think I will get a second set of those brackets in case I ever want to go back to the center seat configuration. Thank you for the confidence booster.

      I was describing it but the audio didn't work out. Sorry about that. But in general... the interior outfitting of the Mercury doesn't have thigh braces. Instead there are a couple of pieces of foam padding. This makes it a little more difficult to roll. I press my kneecaps into the foam for a little "thigh" support. It's also a little bit larger of a cockpit than most sea kayaks, so having a large neoprene sprayskirt will help shed water and prevent the skirt from popping off. In the video, I'm using a nylon one that is tight. As far as the actual roll... stretch into the setup position, begin to sweep the paddle, watch the blade the whole way. When you begin to feel a bit of support on the blade then initiate a hip snap to rotate the boat back up. Thanks for viewing!

      @@canoetour thank you for the info. As you mentioned its a big cockpit etc would that be too big for a smaller woman under 5”? Thanks

    • @canoetour
      @canoetour 3 года назад

      @@kayakgirlcentralcoast3721 Not necessarily too big. Here's my take... this kayak is about 14 feet in length, so it's more or less a day touring kayak. Not really one that you'd take on a river or out into some rough seas. It's wide and stable enough for an intermediate paddler to take into some small waves in a choppy bay. It would ride nicely and not feel tippy. The eskimo roll in this video is really more of a party trick than an necessary skill to paddle the Mercury around. I really only see the roll as being necessary in whitewater, on the rivers. Or for more advanced sea kayaking...maybe. So I think you could fit into it and have fun paddling around. But to roll it would be more difficult for smaller legs.

      @@canoetour Thanks! Should be faster for actve paddling. I've seen on strava some rides with this kayak and it was aroud 7.5km/h (even with my inflateable 90cm width, 450cm length boat I get an average of 5.5km/h over distances of around 20km. This thing is definitely at least +1.5-2 km/h faster)

    Hi! So now 4 1/2 years later...do you still have the Mercury and like it? Would you recommend it for paddling off the coast/inside the breakwaters with wake waves from power boats? Did it hold up? Looks like you put it's stability and structural integrity to a test!

      @ryanallen5304 4 года назад

    • @ryanallen5304
      @ryanallen5304 4 года назад

      This kayak is so versatile and fun to paddle! It has held up very well. The plastic is rugged and forgiving. Only thing I've had to replace have been one of the ratchet straps. They cost $5. I over tightened and that flattened the teeth of the strap. Of course you have to make sure the skeg isn't clogged with a chunk of gravel, but it still deploys smooth from the cockpit. What are you waiting for???

    Is there any way to remove and transfer d rings that are already installed onto another canoe?

    • @canoetour
      @canoetour 7 лет назад

      Re-using a d-ring is a nice idea although I think it would be hard to clean the glue off prior to re-adhering it into another canoe. If you can get it clean and the integrity of the d-ring is still solid, than go for it!
