    It seems gorgious but one question: How bettles lay eggs? Where do they exactly lay eggs and how do you seperate them for nursery?

      @@onsoycenk Beetles lay their eggs in the substrate of the top tray or in the substrate that trickles down through the separation screen from the top tray into the larvae tray below.

      @@organicfoodera thanks for the reply. Maybe it would be better to add an extra portable flat tray to seperate eggs from the substrate, so bettles could lay their eggs easily and continuously, just an idea :) But the tray system looks great!

    How can i farm in Winter?

      @@ChristianHardt-i2h either you use a net-cage indoors (ofera.at/products/black-soldier-fly-bsf-love-cage-professioneller-netzkaefig-zur-fliegen-paarung-oder-larven-aufzucht) or you overwinter your larvae protected during the cold months to start again in the following season!

      @@organicfoodera thanks for your fast answer. How warm do they need for developing? Are 18-20 degrees enough? Another question: is the farm smelling?

      @@ChristianHardt-i2h 25 degrees is the optimum. If it‘s colder larvae need much more time to develop. BSF Larvae prefer wet substrate which smells more than dry one. It’s also depending what you feed and how much. Veggie Kitchen scraps smell less than meat, cheese or any animal based scraps.

    Your boxes are very nicely made. I'm thinking about purchasing it and I have a question: if I wanted to use a maximum of one colony of adult insects, how many floors would I have to build and how big would the flock have to be to use the full laying cycle as in a flock, on this area of ​​the box? ;)? I hope you understand what I mean ;)

      Thanks for your feedback. With one colony in your Farm Top-Tray, you can use up to 4 additional trays with up to 1kg worms in each tray. The substrate height should be around 3cm in height.

      After a few breeding cycles you can shovel out half of the compost and substrate and put it into your garden beds.

    Thank you for this info, now i understand better,so someone must be feeding the larvae everyday for more growth and population,i used chicken manure from my farm.i noticed after 5day the maggots were reducing.the frost was very much than the maggots.

    What do you do with the flys ?

      Flies live for 1-2 weeks to mate and lay eggs. You can mix dead flies into the composting substrate to enrich the compost with chitin which is very good for the health of your plants.

      Just put some adult larvae in the tray again, so that they can hatch to flies.

    New subscriber here. Im a breeder of superworm as well. I want to try to eat my superworm because it was delicacy in some parts of our country. Just friend them with garlic and they are taste like nuts according to them. Hmmm Soon i will make a video about that. Thanks for this video :)

      grow beds are the filter in this case. we use additional compost worms in the beds to break down the solids. sump is not necessary because it's a simple flood & drain system and no CHOP construction.

    Trying to breed bsf but not having any luck. I have a ton of flies but have never had eggs. My setup seems to be correct (86ish degrees, above 30% humidity, food scraps for attractant, laying media of woods slats and cardboard, water to drink) I’ve done both an indoor and outdoor setup with no luck. They mostly just sit on the mesh. Any ideas?

      30% humidity? Seems to be not enough. How much light? Flies need light for mating.

      @@organicfoodera it’s higher than 30%. It I read that was the minimum. Usually around 50%. They are outside under a tree with light that peaks through the tree.

      Wheaten bran as base substrate and some „wet food“ like carotts & potatoes. That‘s a good mix!

    What is the size of the net mesh that you used to separate the eggs from the mealworms? I am making one, but the net that I have is 1/20th of an inch, so I am worried that it is too small for the eggs and the baby mealworms to go through.
