    Diablo 3 has always been my go-to game to play while listening to podcasts. You reach a point where you don't really have to think about your build, you're just mindlessly running rifts while doing something else. It fills a niche. Diablo 4, on the other hand... ugh. I uninstalled it after a few months and haven't gone back, the endgame was just so tedious and itemization was somehow even worse than in 3. The only activity that felt worthwhile loot-wise was Nightmare Dungeons but they were so repetitive- I don't ever want to see another "bring the things to the pedestals" objective ever again.

      Same! It's probably the most relaxing ARPG on the market. As much as I love Diablo II and Grim Dawn, they tend to require a lot more focus and critical thought. I didn't stick with Diablo 4, either, for much the same reason. I'm thinking of reinstalling it to check out the latest major patch, given that it's been getting a lot of praise, but considering how Blizzard has been doing lately I'm not gonna hold my breath.

      Ooooooh, that sounds like a good time (the music, at least…not sure about the video yet, heh). I'm gonna have to check that out. :D RUclips seems to have different rules when it comes to music videos. I was on a huge Julien-K kick a couple years ago and ended up discovering the video for Kick the Bass. I'm definitely not a prude, but RUclips really isn't a platform where I expect to see full frontal nudity.

      @@KernelLeak If only it were possible to force the browser's HTML5 video player to deinterlace. Then again, I suppose that really isn't an issue with most modern videos, soooo… :/ Google really needs to hire some better UX specialists, methinks. I had to use RUclips Music the other day and it's as bad as it ever was. The parts that are copying Spotify are fine, but they really should have kept their original ideas to themselves.

    Odamex does have support the MBF21 map format and DEHEXTRA but not DSDHacked Dunno what's stopping the Odamex team from implimenting DSDHacked, but I guess it's something about DSDHacked since it's only supported in 8 ports total so far

      Ahh, that explains it. I recall the error message being something about an out of range droppable thing ID, so that definitely checks out. I remember Graf Zahl mentioning in DW's DSDHacked thread that implementing it in GZDoom was going to be tricky because ZDoom didn't internally use thing IDs the same as as more traditional ports, so maybe that's the issue here as well. I can even see the uncapped nature of it causing some issues with more Boom-adjacent ports as well. The naive approach of simply dynamically allocating a larger thing array would be fine until someone decided to throw a thing with an ID of 2,000,000,000. I think port developers basically have to implement a hash table to do it properly.

      @@KernelLeak Shouldn't be necessary, IMO, as Doom doesn't have any way of dynamically adding things to the list. We're already so removed from the original codebase that bug-level compatibility isn't really necessary or desirable.

    The stream sounds like it will be fun. I doubt I'll catch it live, but I'll definitely give the VOD a watch. Eventually. I've been pretty good about keeping my watch later backlog under control for the past several months, but I put all the stream VODs in a separate playlist, and I've barely watched anything from it in the past year or two.

      I'm the same way. My watch later list is looking pretty good these days, but I still have a hard time with stream VODs. I think for me it's because I have a hard time staying in one place for 4-6 hours straight, coupled with the fact that RUclips's resume feature only seems to work when it wants to.

    That was a very respec-able pun. 😏 But, I agree with your sentiment. I played a lot of PoE before and the limited respecing is a big problem, especially for new players. That and feature bloat. They have so many mechanics from past seasons that it became annoying for me to sort through and decide what I want to do, when, and what to use to craft what I want. I just got burned out and haven't touched it in over a year now.

      Yeah. I seem to recall a developer of PoE telling people that if they weren't happy with their spec they could always reroll their characters. That always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, especially given the size of the passive tree and the fact that it's very easy to get 20-ish hours into a character before realizing that you made a horrible mistake at the 1 hour mark. At least they seem to give out Orbs of Regret a bit more freely these days compared to when the game was new. I think Grim Dawn had a great approach to respeccing-allow the player to do it freely, but add a currency cost to it. It allows you to make small tweaks without much fuss and only punishing you if you screwed up *really* badly. The feature bloat is a different story. Ugh. I don't think it would be as bad if things were spaced out a bit, or if the features were more subtle (the Altar of Rites from Diablo III comes to mind), but having something like a half dozen fleshed out minigames thrown at you within the first half of the game is overwhelming.

      @@Spectere And if you screw up real badly in Grim Dawn, there's always the Tonic of Clarity and Tonic of Reshaping that refund all your attribute and devotion points. Can't change classes that way, but if you really want there's enough character editors out there to do it anyway... (Bring on Fangs of Asterkarn already... :D)

At this point I'm so used to saves either being encrypted (…why??) or saved on a random server in the middle of nowhere that being able to edit saved games actually feels like a feature. And yesssss…when the expansion drops I definitely plan to pick up GD again. :D

      Turns out the issue was Windows enforcing incredibly aggressive power management settings on my desktop PC. I can't even, lmao. I disabled those, so the random stuttering shouldn't happen anymore. 😎

      Yeah, I can actually hear when the audio cuts out. Basically, Windows 11 has a very aggressive core parking implementation that you can't disable without third-party utilities or registry hacks, and from what I can tell that was introducing enough driver latency that it would actually force the driver for my audio interface to reload. I disabled that feature, so this shouldn't happen in future videos. Hopefully. Fingers crossed. Aaaaaaaa! 🥴

    Oh My God. This is the longest map in the playlist. Map 29. I did watch it all. I really did. But first of all some parts of the map look glitchy or buggy. It reminds me of Doom Wads I played and there where textures missing or something like that. The map was very confusing. I would say it is not a terrible map but you really have to know it when you want to enjoy it, I think. The secrets are strange, the ways you can go seem to be weird sometimes. But the music indeed was great. Oh yes and the Face rocket against a Specter was legendary and also ironic because your channel name is Spectere :D He knew, you knew but you fired anyway. Good stuff :D The automap art was nice to see too. I hope you don't dream of this map now :P because that was a very long experience. In the end you did all kind of stuff, like Rewind, Game Speed up, Fake Archvile Jumps and in the very end noclip. Anyway :D Let's see what the last map has in store :) Map 30 is a good old "Icon of Sin" map. I do like the room where the fight took place. It looked like an old castle from the inside somehow. After pressing all switches and killing the Cyberdemon you just needed one rocket to the "Romero's Head". That was very quick. The last intermission text was very nice but the final endscreen with the Sakura tree was beautiful :) I think through all my comments you already know, how I feel about the maps and in general the whole Wad. I think it is an interesting Wad with cool maps. Not all of them. But most. The difficulty seems to change sometimes, like 3 maps are easier, then you have one hard map and then 2 medium maps. It changes. Or it feels that way for me. I enjoyed the Playthrough and the fact that you really did get all the secrets. It was very interesting to see how you figured them out. It is also interesting that in the end in your Special Thanks list, that there is Neurometry in there. I watched a few of his playlists and he is a funny guy. I think I make a little break with your playlists and check some more of his out and then come back to you again :) But keep up the good videos :)

      I still can't believe I did that face rocket. xD MAP30 was pretty pleasant in terms of Icon of Sin maps. It felt a lot less tedious, and maybe even a bit frantic, and it was nice not having to figure out some weird timing to get my rockets to land. I agree with your comments on the difficulty. It seems to have gone up steadily with a few exceptions (MAP04 was pretty tough for where it was placed, though it was short, for example). Generally it seems to give the player a break every few levels by putting in a couple of maps that are a bit less intense than the previous ones. I like that sort of design. :) And yes, definitely give Neurometry some more support. He's a good guy. :D He also streams pretty often, but I think his usual starting time is around midnight CEST. :(

    In these really old maps, I wonder if they avoid putting particular things in dark rooms, especially specters because they literally can't see them themselves on their monitors of the time in testing the map. and of course, maybe this does happen inappropriately when maps _aren't_ tested.

      Yeah, I suppose it depends on what monitor they had, which version of Doom they were testing with (Doom 1.1 only had two gamma correction settings while Doom 1.2 had five-in the former I remember "off" being a bit too dark and "on" being way too bright), and whether or not they even knew what gamma correction was in the first place. It may also be worth noting that, on an even playing field, specters are a bit easier to see in vanilla than DSDA, since DSDA's software renderer doesn't scale up the fuzz pixel sizes. That's the only thing I really don't like about it. I tend to lean towards this one being tested (the author knew about a potential soft lock, despite the fact that the player basically had to go out of their way to trap themselves) and it merely being an odd design choice.

    E2M1_MT tugs at my sympathy. Can’t help think it must have been so intoxicating to make something that huge with that hardware back then. I wonder if they went on to play Half Life and thought “hey that was my idea!”

      No kidding. I wonder what this map would have looked like if the author had better hardware. A mid-range 386 would have probably struggled to handle this map as-is, but if they had a 66MHz 486 or something along those lines they could have put in a lot more detail without running into performance problems.

    Map 27 is pretty cool. Especially when your favorite color is green. In the beginning it looked almost like an "Italo-Doom" map. Because green and red are dominent colors in that one. The fact, that you have to kill 13 Commander Keens is interesting and fun. The map looks like a big empty void with a lot of platforms and enemies. It is also cool, that the Automap gives you hints. And of course in maps like that you have to have a Cyberdemon. So yes, it was a good one. The music was nice too. And it seems like, that map 28 will have a lot of red colors. Let's see. 700 enemies is a lot. This is gonna be insane maybe :) The map for sure looks gorgous. That is a true hell map. And wow the shotgunner killed an Archvile. You don't see that every day so well played. In the first big open area after the first wave you said it was actually easy but soon after the area repopulated again, you got killed a few seconds after. I guess now it is getting more tense. Oh I would love to join a Spectere Math class. That would be nice :D I think this time the problem with the combat was, that some parts of the map had good combat but others were just empty and slow. Maybe that's why you did not like it so much in the end. But as you said, you cannot like every single map in a big community project like this one. And I don't give you another Doom Wad suggestion for now but one, where I am not sure if I mentioned it already or not. I think I did but I am not sure. That's why I say it again. The Wad is called "Survive in Hell" and it is an unofficial "Hell Revealed 3" in my opinion. I think you would like that one. If I did mention it already than sorry. I mention so many Wad that I forgot which ones I already said :D The music in map 28 for me sounded kinda sad not really happy. And wow that was the longest video of that playlist so far. I mean the last one is 6 minutes longer but yeah. I will finish this playlist later today or tomorrow :) I liked the video again. It was enjoyable for me.

      I seem to be in the minority when it comes to my apathy for MAP28. I do tend to feel that the map's combat rewards running for cover more than actually engaging, which I'm not the biggest fan of. The sections where you're actually forced to engage directly (like the demons in the sewer section) feel like they're over far too quick. I really wish I knew why the line to open up the exit is so well-hidden. >_<

      @@BarneyCarroll Nope, he even apologised for the stutter in the second NERVE video. @Spectere If it's some driver update that's causing lag spikes, have you tried running LatencyMon next to DOOM? It should give some insight into which drivers produce excessive latency and/or lag... Other candidates would be an AMD Ryzen CPU and it's fTPM with an older BIOS causing random lag spikes, or newer Intel CPUs with E- and P-cores where Windows 11 (and last I heard now also Windows 10) makes background tasks with no UI run on the E-cores only unless you futz around with powercfg... but I guess unless you've changed hardware recently or updated your BIOS this shouldn't suddenly happen...

      @@KernelLeak It was an NVENC issue. I switched to software encoding and everything way fine. The issue ended up coming on very suddenly-as in, I recorded Friday's video, walked away for 8-10 hours, and all subsequent videos were stuttery. No reboots needed, apparently. I already ran into the Ryzen fTPM issue on my old PC (which is now serving a new life as a wonderful Linux desktop ❤), but that one was easier to spot since I could actually see it. In this case my game was running silky smooth and all of the hitching was happening on OBS's side. The stuttering was actually happening in the OBS preview window, but only while I was recording. I didn't notice that for a while since I have OBS running on my other monitor, and I have to look up a decent amount to see it. I largely think the E-core issue is overstated when it comes to certain things. It's not like the sub-1GHz cores you often find on ARM big.LITTLE designs.

      Oh jeez, I didn't even notice that. Two possibilities: WizardWorks shipped the wrong text file (wouldn't be the first time!) or the mapper originally made it for Doom, but later converted it to Doom 2. The text file does seem like it could match up with this map, after all. Also: oh my. x)

      Those kind of mods aren't possible with DSDA-Doom, sadly. GZDoom has a lot more modding potential (but it struggles with my beloved slaughter maps 😈).
